2020 vision – Drawing level on Wins & Losses by the end of the decade

Remove this Banner Ad

From our very first match as a club on May 2nd 1925 where we lost our first ever match in the VFL to Richmond we have always had a losing record of wins and losses

We ended our first season with a 3-0-14 record

We ended our first decade with a 34-1-162 record

For our first 18 years, the gap between wins and losses grew bigger until 1943 when we had a 9-6 season, but this was a temporary blip and the gap between wins and losses grew wider and wider until finally
a loss to the Cats in Round 14 1956 left us with a losing record of 132-3-437... a deficit of 305 matches

Now for the good news… every decade since we have had a positive winning record so that we started the 2015 season with a 911-10-959 record merely 48 matches away from drawing level on our all time Win Loss record

Can this be done by 2020?

Catching up 8 matches a year is a tough ask but we can do it with your support, so donate to Mighty Hawks, no no no, just cheer on the boys as we count it down

In this thread we can also keep an eye on the Head to Head records against other sides, important as they are, but stepping stones to the overall tally

In order of best to worst records, at the moment we stand at
GWS 3-0
Gold Coast 6-0
Brisbane Bears 12-3
Fremantle 22-8
Swans 88-2-68
North 93-2-75
Fitzroy 63-1-52
Melbourne 83-74
St Kilda 78-2-71
Brisbane Lions 14-13
Bulldogs 80-2-75

Adelaide 17-18
Geelong 71-1-85
Richmond 68-84
West Coast 19-24
Port Adelaide 13-17
Collingwood 63-96
Essendon 61-96
Carlton 59-102

That’s 8 sides we still have a losing record against, 8 too many for my liking...

We just passed Brisbane Lions last year, and Adelaide, West Coast & Port Adelaide are all within our sights… though it’d help catching Port if we beat them more often!!!

So after Round 5 we sit at negative 47
914-10-961

Lets reel em in boys…

tl;dr We've had 47 more losses than wins - lets even it up by 2020

I'd like us to pass the Tigers in win/loss percentage before the decades out. It might be a stretch but if the Cats tumble maybe, just maybe they are gettable by our centenary as well (it would take some effort though)

Geelong - 54.36%
Richmond - 50.69%
Hawthorn - 48.75%

1960 to current
P 1253 W 750 D 6 L 497 Hawks are +253 in that time

We also have played 76 out of our 78 Finals in this time for 49 out of our 50 wins

We were pretty close to Geelong before that bloody 11 match losing streak. We're on a 3 match winning streak against them at the moment though so perhaps we will "reverse the curse".

Unfortunately our first update is not a good one... GWS are now on the board against us

In order of best to worst records, at the moment we stand at

Gold Coast 6-0
Brisbane Bears 12-3
GWS 3-1
Fremantle 22-8
Swans 88-2-68
North 93-2-75
Fitzroy 63-1-52
Melbourne 83-74
St Kilda 78-2-71
Brisbane Lions 14-13
Bulldogs 80-2-75
Adelaide 17-18
Geelong 71-1-85
Richmond 68-84
West Coast 19-24
Port Adelaide 13-17
Collingwood 63-96
Essendon 61-96
Carlton 59-102

So after Round 6 we sit at negative 48
914-10-962

Three reasons to update the thread
1. We've just had 2 wins
2. It's the bye
3. Our next opponent is the Crows, where a win will draw us level with them

In order of best to worst records, at the moment we stand at

Gold Coast 6-0 100%
Brisbane Bears 13-3 81.25%
GWS 3-1 75%
Fremantle 22-8 73.33%
Swans 88-2-69 55.97%
North 93-2-75 55.29%
Fitzroy 63-1-52 54.74%
Melbourne 84-74 53.16%
St Kilda 79-2-71 52.63%
Brisbane Lions 14-13 51.85%
Bulldogs 80-2-75 51.59%

Adelaide 17-18 48.57%
Geelong 71-1-85 45.54%
Richmond 68-84 44.74%
West Coast 19-24 44.19%
Port Adelaide 13-17 43.33%
Collingwood 63-96 39.62%
Essendon 61-96 38.85%
Carlton 59-102 36.65%

For those of you who don't like seeing %s below 40% then the good news is we only need to beat the Pies once in our next game to bring it to 40%
The bad news is it's 9 consecutive wins needed against the Blues to bring it to 40% - it'll take a few years!

So after Round 10 we sit at negative 46
917-10-963

We are roughly 60% in finals is there anyone who has beaten us all up ?

Edit. I found it. Just essendon 3-4 against

Never played brisbane richmond and of course the new teams

923-10-963 48.95%

Win our next 3 matches and we'll be at 49%

As a neutral and a bit of a stats junkie this is a great thread to read over time.

With your decent crop of young depth and fantastic recruiting history of the past decade or so it'll be a brave man to say you won't be capable of pulling it off by 2020. Even if you don't by 2020, it'll be achieved shortly after due to the winning culture and winning legacies of the place

11 years of Carlton beltings and we've only put together a 12 game winning streak (19 of 21 since 2000). Wasted opportunity!

This is my kind of thread. I am always reading and comparing our club's record vs. others, finals record, greatest winning/losing margins etc. Keep up the fantastic work Mightyhawks.

In saying all that, if we had to drop games each year then please let it be against Freo, Swans and North only. Except for finals of course: then its kill everything in our path.

Also I like how we are slowly creating a gap against Saints and Bulldogs as both were neck and neck with us for many years.
