If Perkins, Cox and Cook are all available at our first pick like Twomey's latest mail article we are doing very well :)
the melts if we pass on all 3 of them for someone else would be fun (assuming Chapman goes before our pick)

What would be silly is matching a 15-20 bid on one of the NGA’s when we rate them say 30-40 or 50.

If the bid comes too early and better players are left on the board, it becomes a simple equation. Thanks but no thanks...

Remember it’s an option not an obligation!

If the bid comes at 15 - 20 and we rate him at 30 then we match the bid because our next pick is 32. That’s the equation - how we rate the NGA vs our next pick if we don’t match.

I recon Nod is a chance with pick 32.

Media points to Cook atm.

Chris your thoughts of Cook v Cox v Chapman if it was your call??

I rate them Cook, Chapman, Cox. So that’s the order I’d take them.

If the bid comes at 20, we loose our picks 32,55

If it comes earlier we are likely to lose 32,55,56

That’s closer to the actual equation.

And then we potentially could have another bid.

The club has already indicated they have included the NGA lads on their board, so that includes when to match and when not to.

Yeah but i think they would weight them stronger than we do as they have put a lot of time into them. Wouldn't be surprised if we match at 20 for Walker.

Think you also need to consider where we rate both Walker and Western. If we rate both ahead of #55 (I assume we do) then it is almost an impossible scenario where we end up with more value by not matching bids. I had zero doubt Henry would be on our list last year and I feel the same way about Walker and Western. They obviously want the bids to come late but they'll match unless someone does a crazy first round bid.

Jesus Christ, Mother of God, surely if Cox is available we grab him?

200cm blokes that move and kick like him are as rare as rocking horse poo. He ran a 6.02 for the 2km and 2.95 for the 20m.

Hell, he could even be played on a wing for that outside run we need. If we pass on him I will throw the cat at the TV.
Sounds like Rhys Stanley

I'd take Chapman before Cook.

As some have guessed I'm not the least bit interested in Cox. Will back him in though in the unlikely event our recruiters have a brain fade and call his name.
your sources got any gossip?

Yep, if we pass on Cox, no household ornament within my reach will be safe! Lol

Chapman, Walker, Winder and Western would be an interesting mix
Yep, and "Walker, Winder and Western" rolls off the tongue as well as classics such as, "Father/son tanning Tuesday" and "Rubber Baby Buggy Bumper Baby Sitting Service"! 🤣

I have absolutely no idea who we'll eventually take, but this being Freo and given the way things have been going of late I expect three things to happen:

1: Best available refers to not just talent, but also character. We didn't choose AB at number 2 because there were no flaws in his game, and we didn't swop Hogan for a pack of chips on a whim either. Getting rid of Hogan in particular was clearly a deliberate choice and talent / performance / potential had little to do with it.... otherwise we wouldn't be replacing a proven-but-flawed kpf with a green and talented youngster.

2: Being Freo, I expect to be surprised on the day, and utter the words "..who?" or "Why??" at least once before we're done

3: Whatever my current impressions may be, I look forward to having my delight confirmed (or my concerns abated) in very short order. This is not the Freo of the nineties or noughties - personally I think our selection team have gotten our drafting spot on recently. Everyone we drafted showed enough to warrant their inclusion, and players who left or were cut from the list, in each case it was the right decision to make.

I just think we tend to not take the obvious choices and you certainly can't knock their recent record. Whoever we get, they will have done their homework and I'll happily back them in.

I have no inside information but get a feeling someone who is touted higher may get through to us, maybe Perkins.

Interesting comments by Walls..

Number of guys of interest and interviewed recently.

“We were in South Australia on the weekend doing some interviews over there. We caught up with Michael Frederick and Luke Valente, who came along to a couple of the interviews with us. Aish and Cox are also in South Australia, so they’re in the same boat. We won’t have an issue in drafting an SA player, it just may mean that instead of arriving in Perth for a couple of weeks of training before Christmas, they’ll probably get there post-Christmas. They would stay in South Australia and train with the other Freo boys in SA in that time.”

I imagine gameplan would have to be something like
- pick 12: best available (Cook, Perkins, Bruhn)
- do a live trade as it gets closer to 30 odd to make sure we get a pick ahead of Walker.
- Pick up the KPF we want (Kolar, Baldwin, Neale)
- Wrap it up with Western/Walker

Exchange (Kolar, Baldwin, Neale) with Callow, and I'm in!

I'm really intrigued that they brought Freddy and Luke along to the draft interview. Never heard of any AFL club doing that before, and **** me what a brilliant initiative by the club. Everything I keep hearing from all the young blokes about what's happening within the club has been nothing but postive, and clearly they all love what's happening there.

IMO, bringing other young players (not just the leadership team) into the interview and drafting process just sends all the right messages to the players, the potential draftees, the supporters, the comp and the AFL itself. Having all the young SA boys train together in Adelaide over the break would also be a genius move.

These are all concrete points of difference to the club, it demonstrates openness, it treats the players with respect, and it breaks down cliqies and hierarchies while building camaraderie and commonalities.

At the risk of lapsing into a fanboi rant here, I so love the direction the club is taking nowadays. Whether we win, lose or draw, playing for Freo and being part of the club actually *means* something again, and how f***ing wonderful is that? 😁
