Seriously, I think we need to tell McDonald that he is our number 1 and we will be doing whatever we can get him so he knows he has the option to stay in WA if he really wants...

That would seem like its in the rules to me
at this rate i think we need him to combine what Wingard did in his draft year with what Darling did

Now we’re going up the ladder (We have Pick 5 at the moment, not sure what that becomes with deficit applied) I’m going to start the Archie Perkins train. He’s a Vic Metro kid which will turn a few of you off, but he’s a 186cm forward/mid who’s powerful, can take a bloody good mark and has very clean hands. Probably a few years away from being a mid, but fits a need as a medium forward to go alongside Sturt.

Personal favourite of mine, I know Chris25 likes him too

I do like Archie Perkins, I have him in the top 10 mix. He's the type of player who could have bolted into top 3 calculations or dropped away into the second round if he was able to play this year. He's a bit like Cam Rayner from Brisbane - high impact/low disposal forward, but can be a match winner on his day. Probably a bit more versatile than Rayner and likely would have played more midfield this season. Long term I think he's a general forward who you throw into the middle when you need a lift.

If the draft was held today and we were picking in the 6-10 range, I think there are 5 guys you could cross off - Ugle Hagan, Thilthorpe, McDonald, Hollands and Phillips. If that were the case then Perkins enters the mix with Grainger-Barras, O'Driscoll and probably Tanner Bruhn as the next best. Then it's just a matter of what you want. And if we do specifically want a tall, you probably can't rule out Zac Reid or Heath Chapman either as neither would likely be around come our second pick.

Do you expect a less settled first round this draft? The last few years especially, it seems as though the top 30 are less of a surprise.

Going off your knowledge of the past few drafts, how many top ten picks where not top ten before the carnival or draft combine? Will be interesting to see how this draft is approached given it is compromised and there would be less knowledge of players.

Still too early to say, but I think the top 10 will be pretty settled. Unless someone blows away the combine testing, I think the top end is looking fairly set. But I think the rest will be harder to predict, even the middle and end of the first round. And with teams likely not taking as many picks, some recruiters may look more towards needs earlier than usual.

Last year, the top 10 was pretty much all players highly regarded coming into the season. Will Day was the biggest climber from the Champs, but then you still had guys like Cooper Stephens and Mitch Georgiades go high despite not playing - which lends itself well to this draft. In 2018, nobody early was too much of a surprise - Sam Sturt was the biggest bolter. It's not that often someone truly climbs, people mention Bontempelli but he was still around the first round mix a year out from his draft. It's more the players who are highly rated but drop away, so perhaps we'll see a few more first/second round picks not make the grade.

Hi Chris25

Are the KPF players this year that good that they are likely to go 1.2.3 as you sort of show above or is this year bereft of quality mids.

Normally early picks are mids.

Both.

The quality of mids isn’t the same as past years, but the lack of underage football this year is definitely a factor in that. Other than the absolute elite young players, most midfielders play second fiddle until their draft year and then develop rapidly as the #1 mid for their side. That’s particularly true of the Victorian system, so perhaps someone like a Tanner Bruhn or Finlay Macrae would have stepped up this year if they had the chance.

Whereas the best KPPs will play generally regardless of whether they’re 17 or 18. So Ugle-Hagan, McDonald, Thilthorpe and Grainger-Barras all had exposed form in 2019 and played key roles for their sides.

Are the talls deserving of being picked first in their own right? Yeah I think so. They generally stack up well to those of previous years - Luke Jackson and Fischer McAsey from last year for example.

Though someone like Lucocious was destroying the SANFL yet I can’t say I’m too excited about him. Looks solid without being great. The King twins more exceptional.

That’s fascinating. You’d have to think clubs are a chance to pick up a bargain Vic mid then - if you’re lucky, or picked the right one based on their underage showing. As a example - If someone like Brayshaw or Stuart never played 18s where would they have gone in the draft?

Sturt would have been rookie at best but Andy would have gone main draft.

I was thinking that it might be best to trade out first round pick this year for a future first round pick.

Just a thought bubble, assists us in list management with one less delisting or we could upgrade Watson from the rookie list. Especially, if the rookie list taken away.

Any late developers might be in next years draft.

Don't think anybody will get good value doing that this year. Way too much unknown.

I would go the other way, and keep 2 spots on our list open and invite 10 or so players who missed out an oppurtunity to train with us.

Didn't sound like that to me at all.
According to this he’s the 11th ranked player in WA. Wouldn’t have been many drafts in history where the 11th player picked from WA was inside the top 50?
Maybe WA has an exceptional depth of talent this year I don’t know.
The final pick in last years draft was 65.
Given this years uncertainty, the last pick this year might be no more than pick 55 or so.
Hence why Western might fall to the rookie list.
