If I were his manager I'd be telling him that being a top five pick brings with it probably an extra two to three seasons of career length if everything goes wrong.

If he is horribly injured in his first year then being a top five pick will mean that club sticks with him longer.

That currency drops away quickly. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by pushing away anyone who will take you in the top five.

Is he that great though? I watched him in that All Stars game last year and he seemed a bit flimsy and didn’t feature much.

Was a bad attempt at humour/having a shot at Collingwood. They’re keen to make finals and reckon they’ll get there.

I’ve never actually seen him play live so just reading he’s top 5 material.

Pies will though need all the draft points for the younger Daicos apparently lock for pick 1 next year.

Yeah, given he's got zero say in it, kinda pointless investing hopes in it and even more pointless articulating it.
If you want to stay in your non Victorian home state it's exactly what a you should do. Eddie will ring the AFL integrity unit in a flash if a club is going to gain an advantage from manipulating the system.

Now if McDonald intends to say he prefers to stay in WA and will request a trade home, during the meetings, then he always can point to the video of him saying otherwise on TV from long before.

The more and more hype Western and Walker receive the more I'm feeling like we're going to have to dig into our 2021 draft picks and move up the board. We need one year to just chill at the trade/draft table but I think the club is waiting until we make finals to do that. Thoughts on:

2021 Freo first + 2020 Freo first > North/Sydney 2020 first + junk picks

We have to pay the piper at some point, why not this year?: Our list is young enough as it is.

That's kinda Machiavellian, but perhaps not Machiavellian enough as I don't think what a kid says on TV is going to hold as much weight as club(s) officials making the complaint.

Any chance we can trade a future second for a 2020 second and just get out of this draft with Walker and Western? Given uncertain future list sizes and a growing chance we might not be in position to select a real gun at the top of the first round, I'd be fine just securing our two NGA boys and calling it a day.

I can see us just taking our first then matching bids for our NGA and leaving it at that since they are all looking quite good Western, Walker and Alvarez as well now. I think our first will still be before any bids...we might trade our 2nd rounder for more points.
Unless we really want to pick up someone like Mcdonald or DGB I don't think we will be trading higher in the draft.

There is a massive difference between Freo fans on BF getting worked up and everyone else doing the same. I wouldn't worry about it.

As we would have a chance of getting a Bruhn, Trew or Perkins etc as things currently stand, I doubt it. Not to mention a guy like Callow.

(This kind of feels like intentional hyper-optimism but for the sake of my reply I'll treat it as face value)

Or, much more likely, in the vein of Aaron Naughton it's a way of saying he wants to play in Victoria in the big fish bowl rather than staying at home in the smaller one. It's pretty easy to say "it'd be nice to stay home but I'd love the chance to play footy anywhere". Clichès are there for a reason: They're idiotproof ways of avoiding trouble. You don't go out of your way to mention your favourite team in a different state without there being intent behind it.

But that's the thing, I'm pretty keen on Mcdonald personally. You could wait till draft night, see if he's still there by Sydney's pick. Do the trade, pick the academy kids and call a day on this rebuild and work on getting consistency and synergy within the playing group.
