Game Day 2021 AFL Draft

Same. Plus Sheldrick fills a very clear list need, Kennedy ain’t getting younger and neither is Parker
Inside mid was probably about 5th or 6th on a list of needs imo, at least where we would specifically target pure inside talent (when we're also getting Anderson).

Interesting how to many on here, that Hewett was surplus to requirements, Parker for another 4 years as a key mid is a lock (thus justifying his longer deal with the risk of losing others), and that smalls develop quicker than KPDs so we, for some reason, should just pick smalls now and draft/trade talls in later (rather than KPD now, and that extra small later which would be the logical option).

I would love to get Bazzo with pick 32. I just assumed that he would be gone in the 11 picks before us. But thinking over it, there could be a chance.

West Coast probably take a midfielder, Richmond have already drafted Gibcus. Carlton are a potential possibility to bid having lost Jones. Hawthorn/Geelong have 2 picks so can diversify with a tall + mid but could be more tempted by other players available in the early 20s. Fremantle/North probably don't pick him with the first 2 picks of the night.

Price point would be the key for Hewett no way is he worth what Carlton are paying they are welcome at that price.

We should target talls in 2022, where there is a stack and we have two first round selections. Don't mind the notion of grabbing one tonight but not going to bag the club if we don't.

Carlton need mids they probably look for outside run.

At this point of the draft anything is possible. In truth the 2nd round is probably way more interesting that the first.

I reckon Fremantle will take him. They have Amiss-KPF, Erasmus-mid both local boys. Bazzo would be a trio of local picks for them.

What's the Angus with Johnson? Why is no one wanting to pick him? He was highly rated on most boards.
said after 2 years he would return to WA

The rumour is that he didn't want to leave WA, which would be perfect for Freo, but there seems to be a real 'Bo Callahan' smell about it now. I'd say that Freo were probably on the phone to him last night to ask why none of his teammates were at his birthday and then will pick him tonight.

Not that different from Errol or Braeden who had a stop start draft year. Or Mills who barely played at all in his.

Talent is talent. I suspect the Vic kids will take a bit more time since their development has clearly been interrupted. But it's not that hard to catch up. Watching Will Phillips this year you could see him go from strength to strength and look more comfortable with each passing week. Doesn't take much for them to get back into the swing of footy if they are gifted enough.
you are talking two years though here, talent is talent and 16 years old to 18years old is a very tranformative time for young men.

For the most talented kids I think it's fine. You could see in the performances of guys like Daicos, Darcy, Callaghan, Sinn, Chesser, Sonsie etc. that they picked up where they left off once footy resumed.

Where I think it's a shame is that it's probably cost a lot of the more raw ones, who may not have that inherent supreme talent and instead rely on the consistency of match practice to develop it, a chance at getting drafted.

If you think about it from our perspective, looking at the 2018 draft, if COVID had happened back then, we don't end up with Rowbottom and McInerney. The former was playing as a small defender up until two years before he was drafted, and would've missed out on those two years to show his worth as a midfielder; the latter wasn't even in his school's team, let alone picked for any of the state representative sides, so simply would've remained a sidelined nobody. Neither would be on recruiters radars at all. There will be Victorian kids just like them out there right now who have not been given the chance to follow that trajectory as juniors, and that's a real shame.

Jack Williams is an interesting one. Before we got Ladhams, I was keen. Even now, I wouldn't be shocked. He's apparently been thrown down back before and we all know our history in turning forwards into defenders.
He's one that intrigues me.
Doesn't turn 18 until next week, 195cm, 93 kg,
Played mostly fwd, relieving in the ruck;
2021 averages: 14.5 disposals, 9.2 hitouts, 5.9 marks, 2.7 goals per game (WAFL colts)
Originally from a basketball background, he has only focused solely on footy the past few years.

To quote the WAFC State Talent Manager;
“We think Jack is a really good key-position prospect. He’s a big kid and going to have a really big frame.
“He’s got a big tank, big work ethic and he’s a pretty smart footballer.
“He’s still got aspects to improve in his game with his body work and different things but he’s a really intelligent and coachable kid.
“I’ve got great confidence that he’s going to keep improving once he’s in the system.

He's had short spells in defence, more as a learning tool than anything else, but I can't see any particular reason why he couldn't transition to defence full time.
And even if that weren't to happen he still offers a viable fwd option and I think it's an area where we are going to need to add to.
Lots of our fwd/ruck options will be gone in a couple of years (Franklin, Reid, Hickey, Sinclair, Naismith) and from our current list that would leave Logan, Ladhams, Amartey, McLean and McAndrew, not a particularly deep group.
A (potential) swingman, who is "going to have a really big frame" sounds fairly enticing and he may well last longer in the draft than some other talls.

Yeah, the only thing I can think of. I wonder if we even knew that about Johnson given he was widely tipped to be gone waay before our pick.
He's dropping like the quarterback in Draft Day. Did nobody go to his birthday party? We probably shat the bed cause nobody else was picking him. Seemed like exactly the kind of player we could have used in the next two years to me. Plus I love a 40% off sale.

Feo make out like bandits taking him with the first pick in the second round.

Who expected Johnson to be gone?

Because clearly a number of clubs post pick 10 didn’t have him rated in their top 20.

Could see us trading pick 32 and what is currently pick 62 (which will become pick 57 after NGA bids are matched) for either Hawthorn’s Pick 26 or one of Richmond’s picks at between 28 and 30.

Why would Hawthorn or Richmond do that? Neither of them need points.

The only way we trade down from 32 is using a third rounder next year with it.

Did the Swans end up nominating the boys they want to consider as Academy picks this year? I can’t find anything mentioned about it and it’s usually a requirement.

We have already traded away our 3rd round pick next year to Port Adelaide as part of the Ladhams trade.

Not every trade has to be related to points during the actual draft.

That would involve 2022 picks and from what we know about next year we are going to be in the market for points and will need those picks.

Deal with that next year. We’ll have plenty regardless
