Im really confused, how is 50k tremendous?

Its legitimately pathetic. Why would you boast about 50k? Those boys have had their best start since The Beatles were on tour and they can barely muster a couple of thousand more than a North Melbourne side who has won 1 game in 400 days?

Maybe the wrong side continually gets told to pack their bags and relocate..

For sides like Melbourne 50,000 is massive. They need to cherish this & build on it.

Do you or dave10 know our current tally?

Our President was quoted as saying we had 80,000 members, but I'm not sure whether that was off the cuff or not.

They have never had the biggest supporter base even through their premiership years. They also didn't win any after the 60s.

Making it to grand finals alone doesn't get you fans. Winning premierships is the only way to get sustainable and consistent supporter growth. Of course there's other factors as well.

Do you think Richmond would have 100k members right now if they were still in a drought from 1980 and were caught tanking a few years back? Richmond would still have 70,000 ish members but not 100.

Not sure about that.

From 1955 to 1964 the MFC attracted almost 21 per cent of total VFL home and away attendances to their games (including 1964 where they drew an average of 49,575 to their 9 home games)

If they had a 22 game season (plus the post Ponsford Stand MCG capacity and the final 5 finals series) they would have surely given the magical one million attendances to total games a shake

No VFL / AFL club before or since have dominated share of attendance like Melbourne during that golden run (even allowing for the MCG factor)

The issue for Melbourne was the 1965-1987 drought which coincided with the rise of Hawthorn.

In terms of demographics Hawthorn in many ways is a like for like comparison for Melbourne - so you have Melbourne’s drought, Hawthorn’s golden era (which not only coincided with 1965-1987 but also 2007-2017) and the high compatibility between the two.

That’s literally three perfect storms in one.

Merge the two and theoretically you would have a giant.

That said, I fully expect a 10,000 to 20,000 additional bounce for Melbourne if and when they salute.

A well managed and resourced Melbourne should really be at least a middle rung Victorian club.

In 2018 MFC was drawing 35k plus to home and away games against the Giants, 50k plus to games against the Swans and 80k plus against the Tigers and Magpies. The latent support is there...

We haven’t had an update on Hawthorn for a while. I remember seeing 70,559 somewhere a couple of weeks ago. Can a Hawks supporter give their club a call and find out?😄

Carlton reporting 81,000 but we don’t know what their auditors number is post the freebie program. Maybe it is actually 81,000, who knows.

pretty good numbers by all clubs except for Bulldogs they should be Atleast where Melbourne are at. Brisbane should be Atleast on 40,000 members and Gold Coast is a worry with only 11,000 members. Be very hard for the Gold Coast considering a lot of ex Victorians live their especially teams like Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, Carlton and Hawthorn who have massive support in qld

Gold Coast numbers haven't been updated for two months.

My guess is they're in the 15,000-19,999 range now.

Small club. Covid has probably cost us 50,000 and we haven't done any major promotions such as free memberships like a few other clubs have. Melbourne as expected of a club with past major success has a decent sized supporter base that would come out after a flag. Wouldn't be surprised if they went to 60-70,000 members after a flag. They also have the most supporters in the MCC.

Weren't they 7th for home game attendance in 2018?
