I enjoyed Sam smirking whine we seemingly received extra time for our pick.

Other clubs supporters would have been melting.

The most insane stat in that is we have the best general defenders, general forwards and 2nd best wing stocks in the league.

It definitely paints a good picture of where we all saw the problems. That midfield, just couldn't get it working.

I can envision one of the following scenarios.

1. We want Johnson. We trade up and get him and then I'm unsure what happens next.

2. Sonsie and Bazzo are our targets.

3. Bazzo is taken but we land Sonsie. This is where we potentially trade back. MM has gone on record of saying we'll use the selections in the 2nd round to fill needs as opposed to just best available. It's likely we want a defender to tandem with DGB for the next 15 years. We may be able to secure a Lieu or Dean later on while simultaneously bringing in another second round pick for next years draft.

4. We land a combo of any of Sonsie, Knevitt, Butler, Taylor, McDonald, Goater then trade up when it appears as though other clubs could strike on Lieu or Dean.

I'm hopeful of 4.

Ward, Sonsie, Knevitt and Dean for example would be pretty fantastic.

My thoughts for tonight:

Pick 23: Johnson/Sonsie

Happy with either of the two. I was originally really keen on Johnson, but surely there are queries as to why he was overlooked by the WA clubs as well as all the other clubs. Regardless, I’m sure we would’ve done our due diligence on him - so I have trust in the club if we do select him. Either of these two will be a great get at this pick.

Pick 26: Bazzo

I’m really warming to the idea of having DGB and Bazzo as our tall intercepting defenders for the next 10 years. These two will be a nightmare for opposition forward lines. Potentially add Callow as our gorilla defender and our defensive key position stocks are suddenly looking mighty fine for a while.

Note: If Clarke is still on the board in the late 20’s, we should seriously consider trading our next year’s second round pick to get him.

Really looking forward to tonight [emoji4]

Is Dean, Charlie Dean?

In that case I hope we look elsewhere. From the highlights he plays like Lienert that was just delisted from Port. Will only be able to play as a 3rd tall despite his height. Even with a late pick we’d be much better looking elsewhere.

Ward/Sonsie could be on the cards without trading up, which is something I never saw happening before the draft. It'd be fantastic to add 2 natural, dual sided midfielders over the one draft. Maybe nab one of Butler or Motlop too. I'd be very happy.

Don't see the point in trading up for Johnson when Sonsie will likely be available - I expect we'd have to lose a fairly significant pick to get the deal done, e.g. 23 + 26 or a future second. That's not worth it IMO.

Couldn't agree more - TBH I would still take Sonsie over Johnson, has all the tools to become an A grader and knows where the goals are. I am still concerned about Johnson struggling at WAFL level when promoted earlier in the year. Improved dramatically throughout the year but there is still that lingering doubt. Sonsie barely played this year but when he stepped in at Box Hill, really stood out with his class and poise. Upside is bigger than Johnson IMO

I wouldn’t be opposed to us grabbing Connor McDonald at pick 23, but Sonsie seems like the locked choice.

Can we trade up and get another kid in the 20’s? Would be fantastic if we do.

I’m with you here.

If a club wants to offer us a F1 and a pick in the 30s tonight (if we are confident he will still be there) for our first two picks tonight then I’d jump at it.

Ward, MacDonald (and a project pick late) and then 2 cracks in the first next year.

Not sure that I like MM alluding to getting on the phone and possibly trading backwards. I'm sure they'd have a reason for it but I love a lot of the players still available and really want to use those selections.

So much fluff and rubbish with recruiters. Every team indicates they are ready to make a deal and the phones are open blah blah blah and nothing of significance gets done.

Just like the trade period itself, clubs are so worried about making a deal and it backfiring, with people talking about it for the next 15 years .

If Freo pass on Johnson tonight it should be a massive red flag for us I think.

Maybe ...

But I can't help thinking Johnson's slide down the order isn't necessarily the massive slight others are suggesting.
Most of the players taken so far (especially the 'unexpected' ones that have pushed him down the order) are very different player types.
Aleer, Wilmot, Brown, Sheldrick, Lohmann for example.

Chances are, Johnson will end up being the 4th player of his type - tall inside/mostly outside mid - selected in the draft, after Callaghan and Erasmus (no shame losing out there) and Chesser (which surprises me but what do I know?).

Ditto with Sonsie, who seems a late choice overall if he goes around pick 25, but not so late when you factor in all the talls, half-backs, pure inside mids etc that have been drafted to fill very different needs.

Just a thought ...

Mate, I literally had to go back and have a look at what you were talking about because I never even noticed those stats until now..

It was the wing rankings that really took me aback. Our general defender rating did not shock me as when fit our back 6 is killing it, if we had Lake style KPD I would rate us as being a top 8 chance off the back of our defenders alone. The wings being second best in the league really stunned me though. Were they solely rating us on those games where Day was dashing up one wing and CJ the other?
