From watching the recruiters video it was pretty lucky for Bergman that the likes of Bazzo wasn't available at our pick. The handful of good tall defenders were gone at that point and other needs were filled.

It's very obvious they did not rate any of the KPD's outside Gibcus & likely Aleer.

I took it as they weren't going to reach but still had some on the board
and specifically, they rated Paul Curtis ahead of Bazzo (interesting to hear Luff use the term 'chaos' forward rather than 'small' - given Charlie Cameron as a 'small' is taller than a Brownlow winner in Lachie Neale, it's probably a reasonable description of the way the game is evolving)

Yeah I think its more about the pace and goal sense in the forward 50 vs the players actual size at this point.
183cm isnt huge but it is 5cm taller than the likes of papley and elliot.
Curtis probably has a few cms to grow too.

I hope they had serious mail that Paul Curtis would go to adelaide or eagles in the next 2 picks otherwise could have taken Bazzo at 35 and Curtis at 38

But considering Adelaide already had Rachele I think they would have still selected a mid in soligo and eagles didn’t really need a small forward

Whether you agree with the recruiters or not there's no confusion about their selection process after that clip.

The nuggets we could glean with a little bit of assumption added were:

1. We had a shortlist of approximately 30 players for the 2021 national draft

2. All of our selections were from within our player shortlist

3. Once a player qualified for point (1) we made a secondary check over list needs at the pick
eg Curtis providing a "chaos" forward to use their terminology, Bergman providing a rebounding half-back etc. So these were both best available AND needs picks.

4. On the chance our top 30 were gone in the top 35 Luff mentioned having contingencies in place to offload the Bergman pick for futures

Good job KC, well written

There's nothing to say we'd have taken Bazzo over Bergman if Rhett was available.
I've got a feeling there was a huge go home factor fear that stopped him being drafted by a Melbourne club. Reportedly very close to his Mum and family - lost his Dad at age 11.
