State’s best young footballer Oliver Davis set to join off-season player exodus and move to South Australia

THE standing of the TSL and Tasmania’s development pathway appears to have taken another massive hit with the state’s best young footballer set to leave for South Australia.

Last year’s Matthew Richardson medallist, Oliver Davis, is believed to be on the verge of relocating to Adelaide to play in the SANFL.

Davis, who was also crowned Clarence’s 2020 best and fairest, was selected in the TSL team of the year and captained Guilford Young College to the state premiership in a breakout campaign, was extremely unlucky not to get picked in last year’s national draft.

The Mercury understands the Crows have been in touch with the star onballer and could be considering the 18-year-old as a possible selection in the mid-season draft, which is slated to take place in June.

Should Davis — who polled two votes in the opening round of the State League and has been the Devils’ best player in their first two NAB League matches — make the move, it would continue the exodus of talent interstate and only add further fuel to the belief that national recruiters do not view the TSL as a high enough standard.

Last year Tasmania failed to have a player selected for the second consecutive national draft, with North Hobart’s Patrick Walker (North Melbourne) and Launceston bolter Isaac Chugg (Collingwood) picked up in the rookie draft.

In the off season, North Hobart’s Sam Collins, a former under-16 All-Australian defender, moved to Melbourne to join the Oakleigh Chargers, following fellow Devils teammate Jackson Callow who signed with SANFL club Norwood.

Other top-end TSL talent who departed over summer included Kieran Lovell (Kingborough to West Adelaide), Aiden Grace (Glenorchy to Central Districts), Jared Dakin (Launceston to Sturt) and Hamish Allen (North Hobart to Sturt).

Only two weeks ago North Hobart assistant coach Oli di Venuto declared more must be done to retain local players once they have finished under-18 state duties.

Clarence coach Jeromey Webberley was reluctant to comment on Davis’ future when asked after the Roos defeated North Launceston on Saturday, while Devils coach Cameron Joyce has not returned calls from the Mercury.

This is our NGA prospect Desmond Tipuamantamurri playing for the Noosa Tigers reserves up in the QAFL over the weekend. He kicked two goals. He is originally from our inner Melbourne NGA zone.

We should’ve taken him in the rookie draft over Menadue.

In the same game potential mid season recruit Cody Raak had 33 disposals for the jets
Daicos is going to give pick 1 a seriously good shake. 40 disposals and 2 goals 4 behinds on the weekend

Snake actually went to this game and these are his notes about these two:

Daicos (OC): Coasted around picking up stats at will, has excellent running power and eye catching lateral movement, but he lacks a bit of substance based upon my first viewing. He's very "me, me, me" and does a lot of stat chasing. He's also nowhere near as good a kick as his old man either. He must have shanked 50% of his kicks. I can see the class, but he's a little overhyped too I reckon. He tries to do too much himself and needs to be a better team player.

Raak (WJ): Excellent in the air and I don't think he was outmarked all day, but his decision making needs work. Didn't offer a lot in counter attack.

As for the highly touted young Daicos, I would be wanting a better player if I had pick 1 in the draft.

One to keep a look out on will be Lukas Cooke from Woodville West Torres in the SANFL.

Kicked 7.1 from 19 disposals and 7 marks.

196cm & 82kg. Smooth mover who is mobile and who good below his knees. Be interesting to see if he gets a gig in SA's under 18's side.

He can change the spelling but I ain't falling for that trick.

Say no to ever drafting someone named Lucas Cook.

The pies will be stressing about where they finish now. If they finish 16 or 17 theres absolutely no guarantee there will be a bid on Daicos before when their first pick would have been.

Could have legitimately walked away from the draft with Sinn and Daicos.

Ahh that puts a lot of pressure on our list management to make the right call

Sounds like Raak is going to be a must have come mid year draft if he keeps up these high possession number games.

First-round contender, Neil Erasmus was Subiaco's most competitive in his side's heavy loss against East Perth with 28 disposals, nine marks and one goal.

AFL draft 2021: Subiaco and Hale School young gun Neil Erasmus added to AFL Academy squad

A fifth West Australian has been added to the AFL Academy squad ahead of their clash against Geelong’s VFL side at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
Exciting midfielder/forward Neil Erasmus will join Subiaco premiership teammate Matt Johnson, Claremont’s Jacob van Rooyen, Swan Districts’ Rhett Bazzo and East Fremantle’s Jack Williams in the squad.
Erasmus, a Sorrento-Duncraig product and Year 12 student at Hale School, was rewarded for his strong start to the WAFL colts season at the Lions.

A four-goal hero in Subiaco’s colts grand final win over Claremont last season, the 17-year-old is averaging 28 possessions, eight marks, four inside 50s and three tackles in the midfield in 2021.
Injuries to several AFL Academy players opened the door for his opportunity in the curtain-raiser to West Coast’s match against Geelong.
“His big pre-season is starting to pay off,” WA Football Commission state talent manager Adam Jones said.
“He’s working really hard in the gym and he’s super fit, he’s put on significant size and he’s adjusted really quickly to playing a new role as an inside midfielder.
“It’s certainly recognition that he’s had a fantastic start to the year.”

Jones felt Erasmus, who quit his cricket commitments last summer to focus on footy, had been one of the biggest improvers in the WAFL colts this season.
“From the WAFL grand final onwards, his performances have been outstanding so he’s definitely been a really big improver,” Jones said.
“His running, his ability to read the game and his overhead marking and his strengths and he’s a terrific size at 192cm.
“He certainly fits the bill of a player who can play midfield and go forward to provide a really strong marking option.”
All five West Aussies will head into the match in great form with athletic swingman Williams booting five goals at the weekend to take his season tally to a competition-high 11 from three matches.
Johnson has bounced back from a pre-season quad niggle to produce a brilliant last fortnight in Subiaco’s engine room and Bazzo is averaging two goals and 5.5 marks per game in a new forward role.
Van Rooyen has slotted in seamlessly to senior footy as a tall target in attack for the unbeaten Tigers.
The team will be coached by National Talent Head Coach and WA product Tarkyn Lockyer.

Surely they can’t get another pick. Their list is busting at the seems as it is.
They’ve only won, 1 game of footy for the year still..
Doesn’t matter how much talent they have, a lot of those kids still won’t make it or will leave for Melbourne, as soon as opportunity presents.
They need to start winning games of footy.

I just bet a bunch of nab league boys in a goal kicking comp

It's never ok to bet human beings on the result of a sporting competition. Never.

Imagine if you lost the bet? What was the other parties plans for a bunch of nab league boys?

Please let this be so.
