God it's going to be an interesting awards season, I think the safest bet is the Tyla Hanks will win the rising star, has been Dees most important player in the last few games.
BnF will be interesting, my heart says Bonicci or Davey, but realistically they're stealing votes off each other and Lambert is around there to sneak a couple too, Bowers is probably the most obvious answer, which will cause a lot of debate if it eventuates

OPINION

As with previous years, using the best and most transparent system of selection (what I call the 'staircase policy'), below are my choices for the All-Australian squad and team.

I always say football is a team game, and even the individual awards should reflect that. As such, this staircase policy of mine ensures AA spots are stringently distributed according to wins and losses. It is the fairest way of doing it, because even I am not above the policy.

AFLW2021aa.png

And the team line-up, in the classiest font BigFooty will allow:

B: Breanna KOENEN, Sarah ALLAN

HB: Ruby SCHLEICHER, Kate LUTKINS, Angela FOLEY

C: Emma KEARNEY, Kiara BOWERS, Karen PAXMAN

HF: Erin PHILLIPS, Dakota DAVIDSON, Kate HORE

F: Darcy VESCIO, Chloe MOLLOY

R: Breann MOODY, Jasmine GARNER, Ellie BLACKBURN – capt.

I: Brianna DAVEY – v.c., Alyce PARKER, Tyla HANKS, Isabel HUNTINGTON, Gemma HOUGHTON

I've left Monique Conti out of the team for my fourth-straight year, even though she is the most supercalifragilistic... player in the league. Mainly because of ladder position, but also because the midfield is the most competitive area and her peers aren't coming into seasons underdone. I've included Alyce Parker again, and she would be my go-to bet on a deserving player likely to get snubbed.

I could confidently guess where else the AA panel differs, starting with the league's most overrated player Stacey Livingstone, who has gone from stealing VFLW medals from Jaimee Lambert to now piggybacking on the brilliant breakout year of Ruby Schleicher. I expect Brittany Bonnici will also make the team, reflecting her prolific ball-gathering rather than the essential nature of those disposals.

By the same token, Ebony Marinoff is a decent chance to get in, though I hope if one Crows mid gets the benefit of the doubt it's Anne Hatchard (whom I'm thinking of just calling THE BODY from now, Elle McPherson style). Angela Foley probably or definitely won't make it, but I found her to have a crucial calming influence on Adelaide's backline on the rare occasion when Sarah Allan allowed the ball to hit the ground in a vulnerable position.

I'll be surprised if Cathy Svarc doesn't make the 21, despite being the most clueless AFLW player with ball-in-hand. But ultimately she's been a huge contributor to Brisbane's results, and she's fulfilling her potential (same can't be said for the likes of the misused Sophie Conway), so I had to relent somewhat and grant her squad-worthy status.

There'll probably be a few more small forwards selected than the approximate number (zero) that I've come up with, but it's been a quiet season in that department in terms of consistent standouts. And Melissa Hickey is likely to help out an old Darebin buddy or two, like Sharelle McMahon has done for her netball sorority.

On the subject of captaincy, I have no feel for who will get it but certainly think the player most responsible for elevating her team beyond reasonable expectations has been Ellie Blackburn. And vice-captain to Brianna Davey (who I have on the bench, perfectly encapsulating my perpetually fluctuating evaluation of her), for similar reasons.

On the flipside, Carlton missed the finals because Madison Prespakis didn't stand up and turn the tide when it mattered most like we all expected, so I've left her out of the squad altogether.

Good call on Angela Foley. I agree she probably won't get named in the actual AA side but she's been superb this year, easily her best season to date.

As promised, my squad was much fairer.

Kerryn Harrington gifted yet another spot while Nicola Stevens misses out is unfathomable.

And Ellie McKenzie's inclusion, juxtaposed with Kirsty Lamb's exclusion, is a classic example of how the younger players need only walk to get the plaudits while the older players have to fly. Four Tigers in the squad compared to the Dogs' two is ridiculous.

Be sure to check out AllHart's recording of Ellie McKenzie's mark for a better look, if you haven't already.

Goal of the Year finalists
Dunno how Chloe Molloy ended up in the top 3 when Houghton's was similar except further out on a tighter angle in the pouring rain. Molloy kicked a couple of her own which were more impressive.

Did someone say... B&F? A whopper of a win to Macca (who does not appear on a certain recent fast food TV commercial) to get awards season truly underway.

Really bad result, Bowen was their best across the 9 games by a mile. Swanson so low is also pretty lame.

There hasn't been a single standout player all season, for mine. Bowers tackled more, I wouldn't have thought that'd make her a lock. Davey this year was also a much better fit for the mid-forward profile that has won in all previous years (Phillipsx2, Gum, Garner).

And, if the vote is at all swayed by players' first-hand experiences, it is possible that the difference came down to Fremantle playing against 8 different teams while Collingwood played against 9 different teams.

Or maybe some Adelaide and Melbourne players didn't appreciate Bowers getting the rub of the green via the match review/tribunal, who knows.
