PMBangers why would the Suns take Rowbottom at 1?

Can’t they now take her at 8 given that’s their last pick before Brisbane has one?
They could indeed, Joyce was recently on Credit To The Girls podcast and said they see her as the best player nationally though, and taking her Pick 1 may have been a selling point to some degree

I guess it doesn’t really matter given they’ll just take the top 3 from their zone anyway.

Not Rowbottom related…

I don’t know how many non academy girls GC plan to draft, but they need to draft any QLD zone nominees before the Lions first pick, because there’s nothing stopping the Lions taking one with their first pick. They can leave their academy and NT girls until last.

There were a few over age attendees at the QLD testing day, and Bree Brock (Lions head of AFLW football) touched on the Lions and Suns competing for the same mature age QAFLW talent in yesterday’s podcast episode.

Saints and Tigers as well. St Kilda loves taking Southern Saints and pick 36 seems prime territory for that sort of pick. I'd say De Angelis is the most likely, but I could see Bohanna instead if they think tall is a bigger need. Richmond has a few late picks, one of which is going to be Makur Chuot, but they could potentially use one of the other two late picks on Sophie Locke.

The Saints have implied that they'll only use their first three picks, unfortunately.

"St Kilda has three spots on its list to fill heading into this year’s AFL Women’s Draft"
"St Kilda currently holds pick No. 4 (Vic No. 2), 12 (Vic No. 8) and 36 (Vic No. 21)"

With Essendon a presumed 2023 entry, I daresay they'll raid the Calder Cannons' list. (And maybe a nibble at the Jets.)

Who are 10 worthy names to look out for at each club?

Montana Ham, Charlotte Baskaran & Krystal Russell (Western Jets)
Abbey McDonald & Reese Sutton (Calder Cannons)
Ham & Baskaran would be high up in the draft picks, extremely good players
And you would throwing the cheque book at Georgie Prespakis & Georgia Patrikios wouldn't you :p

Would definitely have GP x2 in my sights.

What are you seeing with these two?

Krystal Russell | Ruck
22/09/2004 | 179cm
Another dominant type credit to her size and ability to impose on the contest, Russell lead the league for hitouts by the end of the regular season. Her average of 23.8 per game points towards good knowledge of the ruck craft, and Russell was an important part of the Jets’ side given the guns they have to utilise in midfield. She will inevitably be vital in that role once again, next season.

Reese Sutton | Small Forward/Midfielder
22/06/2004 | 159cm
Sutton is a lively type who brings great speed and pressure to the contest. Her ability to break forward or make things happen at the fall of the ball proved handy traits in Calder’s midfield-forward rotation, with her manic defensive pressure another desirable trait in both positions. Sutton should be set for even more time in the engine room going forward, and was part of Vic Metro’s Under 17 squad this year.

Apologies for any confusion, Munga. What I meant was the Saints might consider a mature-ager at 36 and that the Tigers might consider a mature-ager with one of their late picks, in addition to the one they're using on Makur Chuot. I was hoping the league would release a finalised draft order today, since it was the deadline for Rookie signings. As of yet, I've seen nothing. No word on the mature-age signings for GC or Geelong either, although I'm not sure we ever got a timeline for those.

Sarah Black posted this on Twitter today:

Which means that Prespakis may well be playing her first game after being drafted by the AFLW Cats against the VFLW Cats.

It's supposed to be today, the same as the Rookie signings.

Rookie Signing Period:
Closes on Wednesday, July 21, 2pm AEST
Please note: This will also be the closing period for the Gold Coast SUNS and Geelong Cats to add up to two mature aged players to their lists, per the special assistance provided by the AFL Commission last month.

I am not sure the Crows will draft Prowse as they have 3 other Rucks and 1 Inactive and a 180cm Rookie in Simmons. Maybe as a KPP.
Some SA talent will move interstate . Prowse, Schirmer, 2x A. Ballard, Venning and Tonon. With 8 players tested at the combine.

Prowse largely spent 2021 SANFLW playing as a midfielder who pinch-hit in the ruck, and went forward too. She can legitimately play anywhere. Unfortunately for U19 champs, there was no way she was going to play anything but ruck considering the next tallest available player were Amelia Borg and Jade Halfpenny who the former is a bit-time ruck and the latter had to learn how to ruck just to give Prowse a chop out. An injury just prior to the Champs to their second ruck in Brooklyn Kraft meant Prowse was the only natural ruck at the champs.

In short, I'd be stunned if they didn't. She was one who legit said she loves the Crows and can't wait to be playing for them kind of thing. I imagine it will be Prowse, Schirmer, Tonon and then it's pretty even between Venning, Ab Ballard, Buethke and Breguet. Ballard I could imagine going interstate and Breguet originally Victorian could too. If Venning misses out, she'll be a Port target from the get-go when they come in.

Do you believe there's a chance that Zoe Venning will be passed on even though she made the U19 All-Australian team and made the SANFLW Team of the Year?

Yep there is a chance of that. I would personally put her fourth in the SA pool for talent just purely on consistency, weight of numbers, contested game etc. The thing the Crows have to weigh up is whether there is a role for her given the strength they have on the inside, though I dare say she plays forward if they draft her. With the departure of Chloe Scheer, they could very well be looking for another tough forward who can roll through the mid which fits Venning's profile, but also Abbie Ballard and Lauren Breguet's, which is why it will be interesting to see what they do.

Talent manager Robbie Neill said on a SANFLW broadcast this year he expects Venning to be drafted at some point, but basically said if the Crows don't due to the talent there, then she will be easily picked up for Port coming in.

Unless Schirmer nominates outside her state (unlikely), they'll pick up the two AFLW Academy members and have a couple of picks left. Tonon has risen to be that third choice, and therefore IMO it's between the other combine members in Venning/Ballard/Breguet/Buethke for the other spot. Cutting I think goes interstate if drafted, be it Collingwood to link up with Steve Symonds, or somewhere else. I can't see her going to Adelaide with the amount of ruck talent and Prowse coming in.

I thought Gold Coast may have been into the other A. Ballard (Sturt) versatile and Charlie's sister. Rowbottom probably pulls the rug out of that one.

Does the AFLW recognise NGA for this comp. As I would hate to see Hannah Ewings at Port.
