Media Release from the Australian Football Media Association

The Australian Football Media Association has today announced that nominations are now open for the 2021 AFMA Awards.

The Covid pandemic continues to challenge the football industry and season 2021 will go down as one of the most thought provoking years in the history of the game. The awards are designed to celebrate and recognise the media coverage, content and analysis across the AFL and AFLW.

Nominations are open until Tuesday 31 August at 12pm.

Judging, as always, will be done by fellow members of the media industry and other relevant dignitaries.

The winners will be announced on Tuesday 14 September at the 2021 AFMA Awards event.

The event returns for 2021 with a new venue and format.

Metropolis at Southbank will host the event with Fox Footy’s Sarah Jones and Channel 7 / Triple M’s Brian Taylor acting as co-hosts.

2021 AFMA CATEGORIES
The awards reporting period runs from the 2020 AFL Finals, through 2021 AFLW season and to the end of 2021 AFL Home and Away season.

BEST AFLW REPORTER/REPORTING - print, digital, radio, TV
Entrants will be judged on news breaking, impact and a high standard of reportage of AFLW stories. Maximum three "pieces" of media per entry, and for broadcast entrant’s submissions to be capped at five minutes.

BEST AFLW PROGRAM/FEATURE – print, digital, radio, TV
Entrants will be judged on insight into football, relevance, depth of discussion/feature writing and impact. Maximum three "pieces" of media per entry, and for broadcast entrant’s submissions to be capped at five minutes.

BEST OPINION / ANALYSIS - print, digital, radio, TV
Entrants will be judged on the most impactful and articulate opinion and analysis. Open to all media - print columnists as well as broadcasters, including those who work in match coverage. Maximum three "pieces" of media per entry, and for broadcast entrants’ submissions to be capped at five minutes.

BEST PODCAST
The podcast must be a dedicated podcast, not a re-packaged broadcast product. Entrants will be judged on football insight, depth of discussion, entertainment, quality of analysis and relevance. Maximum of five minutes audio per entry.

BEST PRINT/ONLINE NEWS OR FEATURE REPORTING BY AN INDIVIDUAL
Entrants will be judged on overall impact, exclusivity in storytelling, writing excellence, originality and accuracy. Maximum three articles per entry.

BEST ACTION PHOTO
Entrants will be judged on an ability to best capture the highlights, emotion, storylines, and the highs and lows of the game. A maximum six photographs per entry.

BEST NEWS/FEATURE PHOTO
Entrants will be judged on an ability to capture moments which best illustrate the non-game stories. A maximum six photographs per entry.

BEST RADIO/TV NEWS OR FEATURE REPORTING BY AN INDIVIDUAL
Entrants will be judged on overall impact, exclusivity in storytelling, reporting excellence, originality, and accuracy. Maximum three "pieces" of media totalling a maximum of five minutes per entry.

BEST RADIO PROGRAM
Entrants will be judged on football insight, discussion depth, entertainment, analytical quality, relevance. Entries to be a maximum of five minutes.

BEST RADIO MATCH CALLER
Entrants will be judged on clarity, accuracy, colour/flair, use of the language/ability to paint the picture. Entries to be a maximum of five minutes.

BEST TV PROGRAM
Entrants will be judged on football insight, discussion depth, entertainment, analytical quality, relevance. Entries to be a maximum of five minutes.

BEST TV MATCH CALLER
Entrants will be judged on colour/flair, accuracy, use of the language and an ability to marry the words with the pictures. Entries to be a maximum of five minutes.

BEST CLUB CONTENT
Entrants to be judged on originality, impact, creativity, public interaction. Entries to be a maximum of five minutes.

CLINTON GRYBAS EMERGING TALENT AWARD
Presented to the best emerging talent in football media. No age criteria, and discretion on "emerging" talent to be determined by an editorial executive of the organisation at which an entrant has worked. The award is open to media people who have had work published or broadcast (including match-day coverage), as well as those who work behind scenes in production. The editorial executive must submit a maximum 300-word letter and folio of work to support the candidate.

ALF BROWN AWARD
Presented to the overall best media performer. To qualify, the winner must have not only been successful in a 2021 award category, but also have been put forward by the judges of that category for consideration for this award. A separate panel of judges will determine the Alf Brown Award.
