Possible Longer delay than I thought it might be. Wonder what IW/Miami will do. Still, we wait and see as nothing confirmed. As it is currently, It can't be run in its current date unless the Vics change their mind again on the dates, which I doubt.

At the end of the day it's the Government's prerogative whether to allow players into Australia and it's not helped by states having different rules - Tennis is still going on in bubbles which have been organised by medico's and which are trusted by many countries in the world - To fill in the calendar there have been pop up tournaments set up in Kazakhstan and next month in Dubai so there are opportunities - The most practical time to play a rescheduled Aussie Open is in October of if there is no tournament TA will lose hundreds of millions of dollars - It's strange that other countries will accept bubbles and there have been no documented cases of tennis players spreading COVID.

Surely they take players from Jan 1, push the open out till Feb. Only risk there is that Feb is normally f*cking hot.

Think the players have been very patient and understanding of the reasons for this delay. Even the joker, who has a bad track record with Covid, has been good and the requests they have made are not unreasonable. etc need a warm tournament.

and of course, Nadal being Nadal is the star (#love it when he says no at the end of the sentence, no)

Good reply. In the end, it's not up to us or the players to protect the community

the issue is the fact that the other countries have thousands of active cases.

Our border is shut and has limits to how many people we allow into our continent. Tennis Australia needs to find a government willing and able to quarantine for 1500 players and staff and prevent any spread onto us.

Once here, everything will be fine and small crowds should be allowed into Melbourne Park. probably 25% but perhaps up to even 50%

Because our government seems to be going for eradication, so they seem to be reluctant to let anyone in that could potentially hinder that.

Can Sydney host the 2021 AO though ? As you said it seems like they're willing to take people in.
Does anyone other than Melbourne have enough courts at the one venue for a grand slam? Or if you were moving it would you have to play the men's in Sydney and the women's in Brisbane or something.
You could pretty much have to split the tournament between Brisbane and Sydney to match the number of hardcourts available at Melbourne Park.

You could probably play the tournament completely at one venue or the other, but it would be very difficult scheduling-wise and players would have very limited access to practice facilities.

Brett Phillips thoughts today on social media:

"
AO Update: My understanding is that the international players will be able to quarantine from Jan 7-21 supervised by Victoria Police & will be able to practice but not compete.

Jan 25 or Feb 1 start to be confirmed, & decision still to be made on Qualies & lead in tournament/s"

If that's the case (even if Brett Phillips has just spewing crap over the last week). Feb 1 start with a warm up tournament the week before would be ideal...

The State Government had many months to resolve this issue while also having templates on how the US Open and French Open ran successful tournaments in September and October - Will also add the Aussie/NZ players will also have to quarantine during this period, so that you have a secure bubble.

No wonder it’s such a cluster* when the sports minister is the same one responsible for the hq security guards!!!

Any concerns over this starting a third wave, well if the government still can’t run a competent quarantine program then a third wave is inevitable whether they play the AO or not.

But perhaps they’ll use the AO open as the excuse for it starting even if it’s not responsible so Andrew’s can achieve his dream and ban sport in Victoria.
