FF Wallis Bruce Garcia
R English Bont Macrae
I Dunks Martin Hannan JJ

Get it done Bevo!!

Best 22 incredibly hard to name now, especially in their Ideal Positions:

FB: Cordy - Keath - B. Williams
HB: Crozier - Wood - J.J.
C: Trealor - Macrae - Hunter
HF: Hannan - Naughton - Daniel
FF: Wallis - Bruce - Bontempelli

FOLL: Martin - Dunkley - Libba
Int: - Vandermeer - B. Smith - Duryea -English

Emergencies: Jong, Gardiner, West , J.U.H.

I love the luxury of hopefully playing Trealor on the wing, Caleb Daniel on the half forward line, Bont up forward and English more up forward also. Very exciting indeed.... J.U.H. might slot in ahead of Hannan , but he's yet to prove himself at AFL level, so I think he will be eased in and not be a walk up start.

Depending on midfield match-ups and if we need a boost in the centre square, up forward etc, I'd be rotating Trealor , Bont and Dunks through those crucial positions. I would play Bont 70 percent up forward now we have midfield depth, and swap him with Dunkley if we need him around the ball, and Dunks can hold his own up forward also as he has the strength, marking power and height.....

Gardiner need's to work on quite a few thing's and can't see him making round 1 cut..... Call me crazy, we know Naughton can play in Def & Fwd. Treloar has now been added to the list and in my eye's is need's to be in the gut's - Could Bont become that Ridley/H-Andrew's/Howe, clean up/intercept guy in Def * effectively play all part's of the ground with his capabilities - Opposition team's will be thrown out each game & every game. (Bruce would be a clunky Def, so i couldn't see that happen) need's to lift his game. However Bont/Daniel/Keath etc would kill teams in Def and distribute the footy to a awesome midfield brigade. Dunks needs to play pure mid, contested ball winning pig with Treloar & Libba, Smith types etc.

JUH would have to be an even bigger freak then mentioned if he starts round 1 next year. Not sure he can push past our current kpf options following a year out of the system at such a young age.

The 3 big questions for Bevo and the selection team coming into this preseason IMO are...

1. How to we use Stef Martin?: does he play in tandem with English each game like he did with the Big O in Brisbane. How does that effect our forward set up? How do we make sure it stays dynamic and wont be too tall and slow.

Do English and Martin swap game to game instead to keep their bodies rested?

2. How do we use Naughton?: does he play as our key forward again where we back him in with a fullpreseason? If English is spending more time forward next year where does that leave Bruce? OR does Naughton fill that big hole in defense where he can play thirdtall and intercept mark?

3. How do we use Bont?: with Dunks staying and Treloar joining us, you’d think there’s a good opportunity for Bont to spend more time forward. Even with the added 16 minutes of game time next year - macrae, dunks, Treloar, Smith and Libba is an incredibly strong midfield unit. This would take into account how much English is playing forward as well as whether Naughton is playing forward too. Personally I think Bont should be taking centre bounces but swap with Dunks (who starts forward)as soon as the ball moves into open play (same as Dusty with Lambert etc).

Looks bad, if you play Bont in Def over pre-season - Becomes that perfect switch player on game day you can't match

Adz is an offensive minded midfielder that many Collingwood teammates complained didn’t track back often enough. So, why are we discussing putting Bont forward, when in reality, it’s Adz, who needs to play a more free wheeling role forward of the ball.

That age/games profile is right in the sweet spot.

Cordy - Naughton - Duryea
Williams - Keath - Daniel
Macrae - Dunkley - Hunter
Wallis - English - Lloyd
Weightman - Ugle-Hagan - Cavarra

Martin - Bontempelli - Treloar

BSmith - Crozier - Liberatore - Hayes/Richards

I want to see some actual forwards played in the forward line. We've been impotent up there for long enough.

What current KPF options? Bruce is garbage.

I'd be pretty disappointed if he can't push Bruce out, even in his first year.

Def:
Crozier - Cordy - Duryea
Williams - Keath - JJ
- Daniel -

Mid:
Macrae - Dunkley - Hunter
Martin - Bontempelli - Liberatore
- Treloar -

For:
Wallis - Naughton
Bruce - Hannan

Bench:
BSmith - Wood/Young - VDM - English

We really play a 7 man defensive setup, a 7 man midfield setup and a 4 man forward setup. Daniel and Treloar are both playmaking offensive players, best served playing higher than their positional group and setting up play.

I think it is way too much to expect JUH to become the focal point in 2021 at 18 years old. In time he may be, but we need to play him as a secondary forward while he develops and leave the heavy lifting to Bruce, Naughton and Wallis - the more experienced heads.

Agree Bruce had a poor year, but I think he can get back to where he was. Naughton's year was not a great deal better.

Richards and Hayes ahead of JJ?

Naming Ugle-Hagan at full forward in a mock team doesn't necessarily mean he should be the focal point, or even that there should be a focal point at all. Richmond and Hawthorn are the benchmark for the modern era, showing you need a strong variety of forwards for sustained success. That's why it's extra important to keep players like Dunkley and Richards out of the forward line and play natural forwards there instead. Weightman in particular should start in the team next year.

I hold no hope for Bruce, he looks absolutely terrible and completely hopeless in 1v1s.
Naughton is exciting up forward, but I still think his natural game is on defence. Naughton, Keath and Cordy could be our version of Rance, Astbury and Grimes.

Richards and Hayes ahead of JJ?
That depends, is Johannisen going to keep making horrible clangers like he did throughout 2020? His game against Geelong was a literal net negative impact for us.

Richards deserves a chance in a more natural role. Hayes is an underrated outside runner, and should've been given more chances in Hunter's absence because he fits that role better than anyone else on the fringe.

Not that we have many options but all of the team suggestions above with Cordy as a key back smacks as more of the same issues we've had the past few seasons. I too hope that Young can improve enough to fill the void. If not, using Tim across half back could be the answer, at least while Martin is doing the main ruck duty. ,

It's not.

Is Easton Wood still best 22? Just seems like depth at this point for mine. I feel like the games gone past him and you can't hold a player in your back 7 who have poor foot skills anymore. If he was dominating the air like he used to then it'd still be worth it but those games are few and far between. Would much rather Duryea, Williams and Crozier in that medium forward role.

I quite understand the scepticism but the fact that they just extended his contract by TWO years suggests Bevo still regards him as a lock (when fit).

His been a great player
I’ll never forget the GF he stood with the cup right in front of me
Very good organizer for the backs
However his days of playing as the 3rd tall are limited
Back pocket on a shorter player might be best

Story up today on AFL website. They've actually done a reasonable job with ours

With the addition of Adam Treloar, return of Josh Dunkley and continued growth of Bailey Smith, it's going to be jam-packed midfield. It could see Marcus Bontempelli play more minutes forward (just like Nat Fyfe) and Jack Macrae used on a wing. Stefan Martin gets the nod as No.1 ruck, while Tim English's flexibility to play forward squeezes him in. Mitch Hannan slots into a pocket, while Josh Bruce will be keen for a big off-season with the impending arrival of Next Generation Academy gun Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, who should play early. Laitham Vandermeer is incredibly unlucky but is next cab off the rank, while Rhylee West and Sam Lloyd will be also in the conversation despite being overlooked in the emergencies. Toby McLean will miss most of the year with his ACL. – Mitch Cleary

No thanks to Dunkley in the forward line, that's yuck. Wouldn't want Bontempelli starting there either.

Until we start playing natural forwards there, our forward like will continue to struggle. It can't just serve as extra spots to accommodate our midfielders.
