Fantasy 2021 - Cutthroat League - Expressions of interrst

So you draft the full 14 players that all will start. If a player of yours ends up injured, even just out for a week, or suspended, or on a bye week, you struggle with the option whether to cut the player and claim someone else to start. Having a full 14 players playing gives you the best chance to win week to week, as the league is very even, playoff spots on line, can't afford to drop a game. But, if you drop a star player, someone else will happily snaffle him up in waivers, take the zero score he will give that week. Some people have like 4 or 5 bye players for a week, and just think it's better to take the loss that week, than dropping a star player. Another thing to make it hard, is if you make a waiver claim you go to the end of the line for the next waiver round. So, often, people don't make waiver claims most of the year until they get to the top of the list, hopefully that coincides with one of your star players having a bye week, so you can cut him that week, knowing you can claim him again the following week. Hence the name CUTTHROAT.....on many levels, it's a bloodbath, people clamoring for a higher waiver spot, people sharking released star players on waivers, the fight for a playoff spot is always tooth and nail, like four or more people trying to get that last wildcard spot. And because standings ties are broken by H2H, often it ends up that week when someone played a bunch of bye players and lost to someone else, ends up missing the playoff spot due to that. Not always, but often. Many different draft, waivers, and management strategies that make it very cutthroat

I still have nfi, count me in...

Online there's talk about stealing players from each other each week etc but I haven't found a site that clearly explains how cut-throat works, GG.exe pretend you are talking to a 5yo;)
You start 14 players. Your roster is made up of 14 players. There are no bench players. So what happens if one of your players gets injured, or is on a bye week? Do you hold onto him, cop the 0 score he will give you that week he's out? Or do you cut him, grab another player in FA who is playing that week, who can give you more than 0 pts for that week? What happens if you have 3 or 4 players that week who are injured and/or on bye week? Do you hold onto them all? Or cut all or most of them? What if 3 or 4 players are out injured for 2-4 weeks?

If all your 14 players are playing that week, then you'll get the most amount of fantasy points you can hope for that week against your opponent also playing 14 players. Sometimes you can risk it, and not cut anyone, because the rest of your team is one of the top scoring teams in the league, and your opponent that week has a below-average roster, or he himself has decided to hold onto 4 bye players. So there are times you can risk it, hold onto players. But there are times when it's better to cut players and grab FAs to replace them. Perhaps your players are out of form, there's a new fantasy gun out there in FA worth grabbing, or the injured player(s) you have are gonna be out for too many weeks you cannot afford to carry them.

You play other fantasy comps, right? Imagine those leagues had zero bench, zero IR. Imagine what you would have to do to field 14 starters each week. What would you do if some of them got injured, and you knew there was no bench and no IR section? What are you gonna do? Eg, Christian McCaffery is your starting RB. He gets injured week 4 and is gonna be out for 3 weeks. You can't bench him, you can't IR him. All you can do is either keep him at the RB starting slot, where he'll score 0 pts that week, and for the next 3 weeks. Or....you could cut him to FA, and grab some other RB in FA, like say, Morstert, and put him at the RB slot for the next 3 weeks. All the while, McCaffery is now a FA, you don't own him anymore because you released him. But everyone knows he's gonna be out for 3 weeks. So maybe someone out there in the league decides they'll claim him on waivers right away, and start him at RB for the next three weeks, getting a 0 score each week, he doesn't care, cos when he does come back from injury he'll start scoring 30 pts a week for him. Or maybe most of the league will wait two more weeks before someone tries to claim him in waivers.

Roster total = 14
Starters = 14
Bench = 0
IR = 0

Your team might be say....

QB - Tom Brady
RB - Christian McCaffery
WR - Julio Jones
TE - George Kittle
RB/WR - Amari Cooper
WR/TE - Devante Parker
PK - Dan Bailey
PU - Cam Johnson
DL - Frank Clark
DL - Joey Bosa
LB - Devon White
LB - Nick Kwiatoski
DB - Malcolm Jenkins
DB - Jabril Peppers

14 starting spots above, all 14 must be filled every week.
But what happens if for week 7 say....Brady is on a bye, Kittle is on a bye, Peppers is out injured for 1 week, Clark suspended for 4 weeks, and Parker is out injured for 3 weeks.

What do you do? Do you hold onto them all? That's 5 players who will give you 0 pts each. You can't afford to carry so many 0 scorers for one week, let alone multiple weeks. You can't bench them, there are no bench spots. You can't IR them, there are no IR spots. Maybe you decide...hold onto Brady, it's only a 1 week bye. Kittle tho hasn't been performing well, and you think * him, I'll find a better scoring TE in FA. Clark suspended, * him, Parker too. Peppers he's scoring really well, top scoring DB up to that point. Maybe you'll hold onto him too.

So you cut Kittle, Clark and Parker....and either spend waiver wire claims on a TE, DE, WR to replace them in your starting lineup. Or maybe you decide to not waste your high waiver wire order. Instead, you'll let others make waiver claims on the best available players, and you'll wait till FA opens and just grab the best of what's left in FA. At least your waiver wire order stays high and you can save it for a rainier day. Or maybe there's a s**t-hot DE out there in FA, and you gotta make a waiver claim on him otherwise someone else will get him instead. So you make only one claim for that DE, your waiver wire order goes to the end of the line now, youre now 16th in line, and you wait till FA opens before grabbing the best available WR and TE.

So now for that coming week....you'll have Brady and Peppers scoring 0 pts for that week cos they're not playing in the NFL that week, and you'll be relying on the other 12 players on your team to try to outscore your opponent who has all 14 playing that week in the NFL.

Thanks GG.exe, just to clarify, if you drop a player are you able to select him again if he becomes available? Is there a free agency cap?
Waiver wire period in fantasy opens usually right after MNF finishes. For two days people are able to put in claims for players. When Thursday (Australian time) comes, the site generates the results of the waiver claims, handing out the players people made claims on. Once that happens, Free Agency now opens. That means all FAs are now unlocked. People can now jump in and just grab players for "free", meaning it won't cost you a waiver wire claim. They're unlocked, it's a free for all, whoevers online at the time can jump in and grab a player. Players stay unlocked until their NFL game starts. Then they auto-lock until MNF finishes.
So, every Tuesday thru to Thursday night....our time....people can make waiver claims. Thursday night waivers process. When that happens, all remaining FAs become unlocked -- till their NFL game starts, then they lock again, can't be grabbed or claimed, until the next waiver cycle.

When you make a waiver claim you go to the end of the line for the next round of waivers. You can only rise up the waiver line when other people make a waiver claim and thus move to the end of the line. So if you started with the #1 waiver wire spot, you will always still be #1 until you use it. If you use it, you'll go to 16th spot. And stay 16th until someone else makes a claim and then you'll move to 15th. Making a waiver wire claim is a precious commodity therefore. Some people use them freely, don't care. Some people hold onto their spot all season, and use it judiciously near the end of the season, or when a s**t-hot star player of theirs has a bye week approaching and they intend to get him back, and the only way to do that is if they have the #1 or #2 waiver wire spot.

So....if you drop a player, he goes to FA, and is locked for the next waiver wire period. Everyone in your league will be able to try to get him. If you have a high waiver wire spot, you can get him back. If you don't have a high waiver wire spot, likely someone else gets him. Part of Cutthroat life is seeing your 14 man roster constantly change from week to week, due to the ravages of injury and bye weeks. It's all about using the waiver wire and FA pool cleverly, each week, to grab players to replace players currently rostered, either because they're losing form, they're injured, or on bye week. As the season goes on too, players we all thought would be big scorers end up not being, and there are always new rising stars emerging. So it's a s**t-fight in the league as all 16 people try to grab the best players they can from Waivers and FA as the season unfolds, players lose and gain form, etc.

There's no FA cap as such. When waivers process, and all remaining FAs are now unlocked and free for all....you can sit there and grab as many players as you like....just remember, there is always a max 14 man roster, and all 14 are your starters (no bench). You cant grab 3 QBs, as you can only start 1 QB, for eg. But you could grab a QB, and cut your current one. Then change your mind and cut him and grab another QB. Then change your mind again...say, in the span of 5 minutes. There's no restriction as such. Just whoever comes in, someone of the same position slot has to be released.

All players who are not on a roster are in the FA pool. All FAs are locked, can't be grabbed, when their NFL game starts. So at the end of week 1 in the NFL. All the FAs are locked. When MNF finishes, waivers opens in our fantasy league. That means people go to the site, and put their waiver claims in. They have all of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (our time) to think about it and put claims in, to edit them, delete them, change them. Thursday night (8pm) our time, the site processes the waiver claims. Handing out the locked players that people made claims on. Waiver wire claims is a priority method of getting players. If there's a top player out there in FA, locked, and you want him badly, chances are many others want him badly too, and whoever put a claim in, and whoevers got the higher waiver wire order, will get him. After waivers process thursday night....ALL FAs are now unlocked. The Free for All of FA is the secondary method of getting players therefore. All those left available after the waivers. Don't worry, there's always plenty of players available in FA. Eg, there are 32 QBs in the NFL, there are 16 teams in Cutthroat, and you can only start/roster one QB. So every week there are 16 or more QBs in FA. But if you drafted say Aaron Rodgers. You'll enjoy Aaron Rodgers all year, until he has a bye week. Then you'll have to decide what to do when his bye week comes. Hold onto him is probably best. Cop the 0 from him for that one week, and don't risk losing him if you cut him.

Advanced Waiver Wire Tip....
Even if you have the #1 waiver wire, you could still lose him, because someone could put a claim in for him the very week you cut him. If you do cut someone, make sure you cut him around Sunday our time, a day before the Sunday NFL games are about to be played.....because when you cut a player they lock for 2 days or till next waiver wire. So....If you cut Rodgers on Tuesday night, he will be locked Tue-Wed and then became available by Thurs. Someone could shark him from you. They might be #8 in waiver wire, but they put a claim in for Rodgers knowing he is attainable Thursday night. They grab him, even tho he's on a bye week that week. If you have the #1 spot, cut Rodgers instead around Saturday/Sunday our time. That way, the 2 days wont elapse before the next waiver wire period starts (end of MNF).
