1. Pendles

Crisp was BOG for the game
Adams was Bloody good when it mattered
WHE deserved a few for a complete game, the type of performance that helps a team stay in the game.
Degoey was pretty big in the second half.
Pendles repeated delivery to our forwards during our burst of Q4 goals was phenomenal. Those chances were created by Grundys ruckwork and adams' contested efforts, otherwise would of been higher.

Grundy unlucky. Probably a bit harshly judged due to being up against far inferior opponents.

Maynard & Crisp incredibly Stiff to miss. No fault of their own, just decided these guys were better. Roughead was probably out 8th best. Brown & WHE probably 9th and 10th for me.

Apologies to Pendles, Brown, JDG, and Elliott

Can't remember the last time so many players were desperately unlucky to miss out on votes

5: Adams - the catalyst for us winning the game. Bossed the centre square in the last quarter and nailed the goal when he got a chance. Captain-in-waiting delivered a captain's game.
4: De Goey - showed his match winning qualities
3: Pendles - every single possession was a gem and nearly half of them resulted in scores.
2: Crisp - great defensive efforts including marking. I've judged him harshly because some of his kicks really irritated me but overall he was great.
1: Maynard - completely destroyed one of my least favourite players in the comp while also providing rebound

WHE, Elliott & Grundy all played vote worthy games and were damn unlucky.

It was also good to see C Brown have a really good game and Henry give a glimpse as to what he's capable of.

First Quarter

Grundy v Chol, De Goey v Dusty, Pendles v Cotchin and Adams v Bolton. Callum Brown sees some centre bounce action that quarter. WHE v Pickett on wing (Pickett also played ruck) and Murphy v McIntosh on the other wing. Bianco starts on the half forward line against Rioli. Elliott has the tough match up on Grimes. IQ starts on Aarts. Roughie on Lynch and Maynard v Riewoldt. Madgen starts off on a small in Baker.

Observations -

*Murphy this weeks starts on a wing and is opposed to McIntosh. It appears the club sees Murphy as a versatile negating style player - defence, wing or up forward.

*Stoppage at our 50m on the flank. Grundy v Choi in ruck. Sidey is opposed to Stack. WHE v Bolton. Murphy is opposed to Naish in the corridor at our 50m. Callum Brown v Thompson Dow. Rioli is free defensive side about 40m from our goal- his opponent is Bianco is 55m from our goal. De Goey v Collier Dawkins. Sidey goes to the contest to try and win the ball, Stacks wins the ball, shows great poise to get around Brown and on his non preferred left foot finds Graham at CHB (Madgen now on him). Sidey is back on Stack again. Sidey then allows Stack to run off him and receive the handball running through the corridor. Stack handballs to Rioli who has found space off Bianco. Rioli finds Martin in the centre square. Graham is free and charging past. Madgen and Bianco have elected to run back to goal through the corridor. Graham receives the ball but luckily fumbles.

Great poise and decision making from Stack. That is something that Noble and Madgen both lack. Bianco, Sidebottom and Madgen all allowed their opponents to exit the ball from our 50m way too easily.

*Stoppage on the wing. Choi is limping and does not attempt to contest the stoppage. So its Grundy against no one. Collier Dawkins v De Goey. Pendles is grappling with Dusty, Crisp is with Bolton and Murphy is locked arms with Baker. Brown is again opposed to Thompson Dow. Grundy looks down but palms the ball down to Collier Dawkins. A bit of miscommunication /no communication with De Goey. Collier Dawkins manages to get out a handball but it ricochets off Baker to Callum Brown who is charging through the contest but he somehow loses the ball and it ends up with Dusty. At this stage Collier Dawkins has not really moved. De Goey pays no attention to his opponent Collier Dawkins. De Goey decides to run boundary side while Collier Dawkins is now on the other side of the contest. Baker streams towards the forward 50m, does a complete scrubber kick towards the leading Lynch. De Goey at this stage is going at half pace. Its a bit scrappy but eventually Collier Dawkins nails the goal from 45m out. GOAL RICHMOND.

Callum Brown and De Goey both with zero second efforts. Zero spread from the stoppage. Murphy as usual does not influence anything.

*Choi is injured and limps off the ground with about 14 minutes left in the quarter. With 13 minutes left Choi heads down to the rooms.

*For those interested in Naish - after the Collier Dawkins goal, Naish lines up on the wing against Murphy. Callum Brown moves into the centre bounce with De Goey moved out. Grundy (203cm and 108kg) is now rucking against Pickett (184cm and 80kg). Pickett actually out jumps Grundy but Grundy keeps his feet and double palms the ball to Adams. Callum Brown has a nice passage of play with ball in hand where he show cases some decent leg speed.

*A classic example of sports science. We have a clear advantage in the ruck now that Choi is off the ground. At this stage we would not know how long he is going to be off for. Surely you would keep Grundy in the ruck and exploit something that should be an advantage. Instead we put Cameron into the ruck. We end up receiving the free kick etc and Brown finds space off Dusty and gets the clearance.

*Poor boundary stoppage inside the Richmond forward line about 40m from their goal. Jonathon Brown correctly points out prior to the stoppage that we have left the goal square completely vacant. Adams is opposed to Bolton with Maynard against Riewoldt and Collier Dawkins initiating body contact on Maynard. Mayne is against Baker. Murphy is free as our spare. De Goey is against Martin. Cameron is in the ruck and against Lynch. Graham is running away from the stoppage and is being followed by Noble.
Riewoldt moves towards where the ball is going to land after being thrown in and Maynard follows. As Bolton peels off, Collier Dawkins rolls across and engages Taylor Adams. Crisp realises what is happening and comes in and applies a block on Bolton. Cameron grabs the ball out of the ruck but is tackled by Riewoldt. At this stage both Adams is bear Bolton while Crisp is with Collier Dawkins. Collier Dawkins goes in and wins the ball, ends up spilling to Bolton who snaps the goal - would have been an easy intercept mark if we had a defender back. De Goey is a bit lucky as he allowed Martin to get goal side of the stoppage.
Murphy as usual has zero influence and really does not seem to identify danger.

*So far De Goey has been poor defensively.

*Naish does a nice little blind turn and boots the ball to clear the defensive 50m for Richmond.

*With about 9 minutes left in the quarter, Choi returns to the field. Cameron is still rucking at this stage.

*Cameron takes a nice intercept contested mark on the wing. Cameron decides to kick backwards 20m to Mayne. Mayne marks and decides to kick forwards 20 to Roughie in a similar spot (to where Cameron was) but Bakers intercepts the ball. Poor decision making and execution all round. Richmond get the forward 50m entry but we manage to repel it and Crisp marks 35m from the Richmond goal. We end up attacking the corridor through Bianco but Baker this time spoils Sidebottom. Riewoldt spots up Lynch who marks in the forward pocket. GOAL RICHMOND
Two great defensive pieces of play from Baker.

*Naish is now moved to half forward and is opposed to Madgen. Choi is back in the ruck and is opposed to Grundy.

*Adams kicking so far has been atrocious.

*Noble marks the ball in the corridor about 30m from Richmonds goal. On the Olympic side of the ground about 70m from Richmonds goal, Grundy has a mismatch against Cotchin. Chol at this stage is in middle of ground near the edge of the square but he works forward towards where Grundy is. Through Pendles we decide to bring the ball back through the corridor and then switch it to the other side of ground. We muck around with the ball so Grundy should have had plenty of time to push forward. Choi is clearly injured. Grundy should be working over and exposing Choi. Instead the injured Chol manages to work back harder than Grundy and takes an intercept mark in defence. Grundy was about 10m away and Short managed to engage Grundy and prevent him from making the contest. Grundy ends up being on the mark.

*Contest 1 - Madgen out marks Naish in a one on one contest. (So far i am underwhelmed by Naish). Madgen 1 - Naish 0

*Contest 2 - Dusty scrubbers an inside 50m kick to about 20m from Richmonds goal. Madgen leads the chase back to the ball and has about a 10m gap on Naish. Madgen tries to use his evasive skills but that doesn't work and Naish bodies Madgen and disrupts the kick (high up and under) and causes it to fall short and Lynch marks over Crisp about 35m from goal. GOAL Richmond. Madgen 1 - Naish 1

End of Quarter.

Second Quarter

Grundy v Chol, Pendles v Cotchin, Adams v Bolton and De Goey v Collier Dawkins Noble v Baker, Maynard v Jack R. Mayne v Dusty WHE and Murphy start on the wing.

Callum Brown gets some more centre bounce action that quarter. Essentially replaces De Goey. Sidey for the first time in the match attends a couple centre bounces.

Observations -

*A glimpse of magic from Henry - Murphy does a 30m up and under kick from defence along the boundary to about 70m from Richmonds goal. Henry uses his leap to take a good mark against Mansell. He bounces away as soon as he lands and that is the key to opening up the play. Nails Mihocek with a 30m pass along the boundary. Elliott is 20m goal side of Grimes at the 50m. It should have been a goal but unfortunately Elliott ends up mucking up the play with a fumble after a bounce.

*An example of the forward line being a bit dysfunctional. Elliott takes a mark about 85m from our goal on the flank. At this stage Thomas is nearer the boundary about 60m from our goal (about 15m in space from Astbury) with his back to Elliott and Thomas is pointing for the ball to be kick in front of him. Elliott plays on and wants to hit up Thomas with a lead up pass. Thomas is glancing back towards Elliott while running forward. Elliott decides to hold onto the ball as Thomas has not given him anything, that allows Cotchin to to tackle Elliott and it is holding the ball. Elliott after being tackles gestures with his hand to Thomas that he wanted Thomas to lead up at the ball.

*Boundary stoppage on the wing. Murphy and Crisp are both free at the back of the stoppage. Grundy does well and deftly taps the ball to Pendles......eventually the ball ends up with Brown who handballs backwards to Murphy (who is in space and under no pressure) and all he has to do is nail a 25m/30m pass to Adams. The kick is terrible and bounces 10m away from Adams and that allows Bolton to tackle Adams and it is holding the ball. That should have been an easy entry inside our forward 50m.
It is quite puzzling as to why one of our worst ball users would be the extra at the stoppage.

*Some nice ball movement from the back half. Crisp at defensive 50m flank beings the ball back to Adams in the corridor about 60m from Richmonds goal. Adams immediately passes 30m to Brown. Thomas and Sidebottom were also free. Brown marks but then takes 10 seconds before kicking the ball inside our forward 50m. Mihocek led up on his opponent but Brown ignored that. The two options were Elliott on Grimes and Grundy on Chol. Grundy did not really present or try and mark Chol work hard. Chol ends up wining the ball and handballing to Grimes. Grundy zero influence on that contest. Richmond end up taking the ball to the other end of the ground and Baker marks and coverts a good goal from about 50m.
I think part of the problem is due to the limitation of Browns kicking. Grundy also should have worked harder to present a viable alternative.

*After Baker kicks the goal to put Richmond up by 29 points, Naish starts on the wing against WHE.

*Short seems to be playing on Sidebottom and that match up is hurting us big time. 14 disposals 100% kicking efficiency (stats by Huddo)

*One of the commentators nailed it. It is about getting the ball in the right players hands - i.e. Pendles, Elliott, Crisp, Bianco. (Keep it was from Adams, Murphy Noble etc)

*Brown takes a nice mark at defensive 50m. Brown receives a 50m penalty. Now Brown has the ball forward of centre. At this stage Short is on Henry. Not for the first time Brown takes forever (this time 7 seconds) and is called to play on and does his best up and under set up kick where Grimes takes a pretty good mark over Cameron. Henry starts going to set up defensively for the Grimes kick but forgets all about Short who runs past Grimes for the handball receive and switches the play to the Olympic side of ground. Naish has found 20m of space on Noble and marks about 70m from our goal. Noble mans the mark and Naish does a 20m pass to Graham. Naish keeps running and loses Noble lol, recieves the ball on the wing and kicks long to Riewoldt who marks at 50m on about a 40 degree angle. Some nice play from Naish. Luckily the end result is a point to McIntosh
Poor play from Henry to allow their best kicker in Short an easy kick outside of our forward 50m.

*48 seconds left in the term (Graham is on Sidebottom at this stage) and we have won the clearance and Adams is kicking the ball inside our forward 50m. 42 seconds left and we have possession about 40m from our goals. Mihocek for some reason decides to handball backwards into the corridor at our 50m to Grundy. Grundy fumbles and we lose the ball with 38 seconds left. Unfortunately for us Sidebottom rightfully assumed that we might create something and ran towards our goal square. Graham didn't follow him and now on turnover Graham is in space. Riewoldt marks and goals with 10 seconds left.
Given the time left in the quarter, we probably should have been set up a bit better behind the ball. Richmond had one on one matchups ahead of the ball. There have been other examples in recent weeks where Membrey (other names escape me) have dropped back late in the quarter to help their team. Perhaps the transition was too quick. Murphy really does not appear to understand where the dangerous spots on the ground are (to be fair Murphy did work back hard from our forward line so deserves credit for that). Madgen is on Riewoldt at this stage (Maynard off injured). The kick went to the hot spot where we had a 3 (Madgen, Mayne and IQ on 2 (Lynch and Riewoldt). For some strange reason Madgen allowed Riewoldt to have 15m of space and a jump at the ball. Lynch keeps IQ out. GOAL RICHMOND.

Overall a good quarter but we have too many passengers. And if we want to have an extra man at stoppages at least make it someone who is a good user of the football and is a bit footy smart. Last week it was Poulter and this week its Murphy and both ineffectual.

End of Second Quarter.

Third Quarter

*Murphy continues to butcher the ball. Has no idea when it comes to the depth of a kick. He generally appears to kick it too hard.

*A second stoppage in the forward line for Richmond about 40m from their goal. Once again we decide to leave the goal square vacant. At the stoppage Adams is on Bolton but also has Baker. De Goey is free (previous stoppage he was responsible for Bolton). Maynard is lined up on Riewoldt. Crisp is on Graham. Lynch contests the ruck against Grundy. Mayne is against Martin. We do well initially out of the stoppage but a handball from Mayne is intercepted by Baker who is free and he bursts away and kicks the goal - had we have a player in goal square the Baker kick would have been cleared easily.

*Interesting tactic at the centre bounces. Bolton has been the only effective clearance player for Richmond. At the centre bounce we leave him free (Bolton stands diagonally in front of Chol) and his opponent De Goey/Pendles stands behind Grundy and backs Grundy to win the stoppage.
Another example of Grundy not being on the same page as our mids - Adams is on Martin. Adams comes charging through the stoppage to receive the tap from Grundy. Grundy wins the double handed tap but hits it straight to Martin who has not moved. Martin gladly accepts and kicks the ball inside Richmonds 50m.

*Ruscoe came on at half time and must still has his L plates on. Ruscoe is responsible for Castagna. Castagna marks the ball on the lead in front of Ruscoe about 50m from goal on the boundary. Castagna kicks the ball long deep towards goals. Ruscoe goes wandering off towards goals and forgets all about Castagna. Maynard wins the ball and kicks long out of defence, pretty much to where the kick from Castagna was from. Ruscoe at this stage is pretty much on the boundary line by himself. Richmond have a 2 (McIntosh and Castagna) v 1 (Noble). McIntosh keeps out Noble and Castagna marks. GOAL RICHMOND.

*After Richmond have established a 28 point lead we decide to man up Bolton (Callum Brown). De Goey is now up forward and opposed to Rioli. Sidey is on Short. Down back Crisp is now on Baker.

*Another terrible stoppage in the Richmond forward line. The soppage e is about 25m out directly in front of Richmonds goal. Once again we leave the goal square open. Noble is on Pickett. Maynard v Riewoldt. Crisp v Baker. IQ V Graham. Bolton v Callum Brown. Once again we have two extra (WHE and Pendles) at the stoppage. Grundy is up against Lynch. Grundy for some reason decides to tap the ball in front of himself (Graham is the closest) . IQ luckily gets the ball but taps it to Pickett who kicks the goal. Noble seems to get drawn the ball but never actually impacts the contest and forgets about his opponent.
Considering they have no ruckman of note, we have been destroyed at the stoppages. GOAL RICHMOND

*Murphy has no second or third efforts. Scrappy play at our attacking 50m. McIntosh boots the ball, comes off side of his about 40m sideways towards the boundary line. Murphy and Aarts are both hunting down the ball from different directions. They both arrive at the same time and Aarts bumps Murphy who falls over. Aarts retains his feet and runs off, takes a bounce. (Murphy just jogging). Aarts gets to the wing and Madgen manages to intercept. Adams ends up with the ball and switches back through the corridor. You can see Murphy at the bottom right hand corner of the screen - No real urgency in terms of either presenting or charging towards our goal to provide an option.

*Grundy v Pickett in the ruck at centre bounce - Grundy wins the hit out but we lose the stoppage. Grundy hits it to the area/spot where we are out numbered 3 to 1. In the around the ground stoppages Grundy (as he should be) is easily too good for Pickett.

Perhaps this is just good timing as I am rewatching Coll v Richmond from this season.

Nank was injured and did not play.

Chol was injured during the game and that forced Pickett to ruck.

Now that Chol has left and CCJ have both left the club - why are Richmond not after another Ruck/forward ruck?

Nank and Soldo both returning from injury? Seems risky.

Hey JLC, just checking to see all is well? Noticed you stopped at this match which is an achievement itself how much you reviewed in the year we had. Anyhow just wanted to see if all is ok and say thx as I appreciated the detail you went into your analysis. Must have taken you a while to get through. Would have been assistant coach like, I'd imagine.
