Pendlebury there abouts.
Many started brightly but faded badly after half time.
Thomas and WHE seem to be just filling others slots until they are ready: hopefully that will come soon enough.
The Browns show glimpses but need to be better
Josh Daicos was poor against footscray but has worked his way into the season and last night was a tidy game, could've kicked 4.
Nobe and IQ are becoming important run and carry partners out of the back 50.
We have built up a very impressive backline.

5: Grundy - dominated all night not just in the ruck but was excellent at ground level, too. Will face better opposition but really encouraging to see him back to that level.
4: Roughead - was immense down back and would have been the hero if we’d held on.
3: Quaynor - keeps improving and will be a star.
2: Pendles - started on fire but faded a little. Still one of the best ball users in the comp.
1: Sier - showed several times how good he can be. Needs to back it up now.

A few others could have got that last vote particularly Noble, Daicos & Howe.

Overall I thought we actually played pretty well which shouldn’t be forgotten with the horrible way it ended. We need to develop some of the kids so that they can be ready to take the place of our usual passengers.

Match thread is closed - so will post here if that is okay.

Have been dreading rewatching this match - one quarter done.

First Quarter

To start the match Grundy v Fullarton, Pendles v Neale, De Goey v Zorko and Adams v Lyons Wings Crisp v Robinson and T Brown v McCluggage
Noble v Zac Bailey, IQ v CC, Moore v Daniher, Mason Cox v Harris Andrews

Observations -

*Darcy Moore takes a kick from back pocket.....Ball ends up about 40m from Lions goal. Moore is kinda in no mans land (about 30m out from goal). Maynard tackles Joe Daniher near boundary line......Ball is cleared to the wing. Our defence then had around 15 seconds to reset i.e. Moore goes back to Daniher.

Within 15 seconds the ball comes back from the wing via Birchall to Zorko. Zorko is the one that kicks the ball inside 50m and Daniher marks over Maynard. Moore is at fault here. Moore kinda believes he is the loose man in defence. He allowed Maynard to remain on Daniher. McCluggage does a smart lead towards Zorko.....Moore makes the decision to follow McCluggage towards the kicker (Zorko). Anyway that is Brisbanes first goal. Very avoidable.

*Josh Thomas kicks a goal. Ball goes back to the middle. By this stage of the game Sier (already kicked a goal) is on Neale. From the centre clearance the ball is bundled forward to about maybe 60m from our goal. Neale from the clearance has made the decision to drift forward towards the Lions goal. Neale wanders forward pretty much unchecked. Sier made the decision to follow the ball. Sier fails to really impact the contest i.e. fails to cause a stoppage. Brisbane win the ball and eventually Neale marks the ball at the 50m line and kicks the Lions second goal (second and final goal for the quarter). Sier is no where to be seen.

*Sier played on Neale for at least the second half of the quarter and should have paid Neale more respect.

*So far Grundy has been good. Has pushed forward twice. Although i note his first two hit outs were "back door" - The third time he tried that McCluggage was standing right there all by himself and got the clearance.

*Grundy attended all 7 centre bounces. Pendles 6, Adams 5, De Goey 4, Sier 4 and with two minutes left in quarter Daicos and Crisp attend one each.

*For one centre bounce we appear to only have one wingman - Ah Chee is standing all by himself. Not sure what happened there.

*Early on Tyler Brown was good. At one around the grounds stoppage, he used his body very well on McCluggage. Tyler Brown then faded.

*Maynard needs to stop kicking predictable floaters out of defence. The opposition read the kick and cause the turnover.

*It is honestly like we have never seen Birchall play before. He seems to float around and drift into gaps etc.

Second Quarter

Opening Centre bounce - Grundy v Fullerton, Crisp v Neale, Adams v Robertson and De Goey v Zorko.

Oberservations -

*That was the only centre bounce that De Goey attended. Was Sier and Daicos after that.

*WHE takes a mark around 50m out from goal - straight in front. For whatever reason, he thinks passing to Thomas is a good idea. Wrong. McCluggage intercept mark. Luckily Cox kicks a goal a few minutes later.

*There is a long period in the quarter that is a real arm wrestle. We are on top on the scoreboard by 19 points and in general play. Brisbane drop a spare or two back in defence (which we allow) but Brisbane cannot move the ball past the centre (that is where our spares are) and we have multiple entries inside our 50m but for zero impact on scoreboard. Maynard receives a handball on the wing from IQ, not under that much pressure, looks up and on the boundary side has Crisp free (requires a 20m kick) and Tyler Brown behind (requires a 30m kick) and Mitch Robinson off to the side close to Crisp. Maynard tries to pinpoint the pass to Crisp but Robinson intercepts about 60m out from our goal. Josh Thomas is on Birchall at this stage towards middle of ground about 60m out from Collingwood goal. Birchall runs off Thomas to receive a diagonal kick back at defensive 50m (Thomas belatedly chases Birchall but its too late). Birchall marks the ball and nails a perfect kick in the middle of the ground to Hipwood (At the bottom the screen you can see IQ by himself running towards Brisbanes goal). Hipwood then kicks the ball into the Lions 50m. First entry into the Brisbane 50m for quite some time. Eventually the ball ends up with Charlie Cameron who is on Madgen which is unusual. Cameron is too slick for Madgen and snaps the goal. IQ is in the goal square by himself as the ball sails over his head. Started by Maynard but contributed to by Thomas being lazy and IQ being in no mans land. Eventually Brisbane won that war. They kicked another goal soon after (Daniher free kick against Moore).

*When Grundy taps the ball boundary side, we generally halve the contest or win it. We have the space to run onto the ball. Grundy was playing (two really good hit outs) well but then got taken off for a rest.

*Lions have two very good kicks in their back half Rich and Birchall (which we all know) and Callum Brown and Josh Thomas do not pay them enough respect. Way too much freedom. Why on earth? Tighten up.

*Howe has given away two free kicks that have resulted in goals (one directly and one indirectly).

*Sier looks buggered by half time, Neale still running hard.

*Maynard finishes the quarter on the bench along with Callum Brown

End of Quarter.

Third Quarter
Opening Bounce - Grundy v Fullarton, De Goey v Zorko, Pendles v Neale and Adams v Lyons.

* * This quarter is about breakdown in communication. Happens all over the ground.
*After being knackered at half time, Sier only attends one centre square bounce and that is right at the end of the quarter. De Goey only two for the quarter.
*Noble v Berry. Noble follows the ball while Berry peels off. Berry ends up being the link in the chain for a Brisbane forward entry. Luckily does not result in a goal
*Good counter attack but Sidebottom under no pressure cannot execute a 5m handball to Checkers. Too far out in front, ball dribbles, and that gives Rich enough time to put Checkers under pressure and it results in a turnover.
*Howe matched up on Bailey on half forward line boundary side. Howe misses a tackle on Bailey. Bailey handballs to Daniher. Roughie peels off his man to come to Daniher which leaves IQ stuck in a two on one. Daniher pulls his kick and hits up Charlie Cameron right in front of goals. Charlie Cameron mark but luckily misses an easy goal.
Birchall still roams free
*9 minutes left in quarter. Mayne gets a head knock from Charlie Cameron. Eventually goes down to rooms with 5 minutes left in quarter.

* Zorko roams free multiple times. (On one occasion Tyler Brown expects Maynard to pick up Zorko and vice versa.
*Another time Rich is just an extra player at the stoppage. Cox ends up in a mismatch on Rich and he just peels away for the easy receive.
*There is an occasion where Moore is mismatched on Charlie Cameron. Moore does not chase back hard enough and Cameron ends up marking in goal square over Howe. Goal Brisbane.
* With around 6 minutes left in the quarter - Sidebottom gives away a free kick to Mitch Robinson. About 60m out from our goal towards the boundary. Noble is meant to be on McCluggage (both are about about 50m out from goal) but Noble is hands on knees just staring at Robinson who is around 15m away now and surveying his options of where he is going to kick. Neale is ahead of Noble and is looking towards Brisbanes goal and pointing at McCluggage to move towards goal (i.e. Noble should know as he can see Neale directing traffic) McCluggage starts to peel away towards goal. Noble turns around and sees McCluggage is free but says nothing and does not react. Noble just turns around again. Noble eventually runs towards McCluggage but its too late. Robinson has identified the free space and hits up McCluggage who is all by himself around 35m from goal. Quaynor mans the mark, while Noble hides around 10m away. Goal to McCluggage.
*Darcy Moore once again proves he is our best launcher from attack. Receives a handball from IQ about 20m out from goal. Moore takes a bounce and runs about 20m then boots the ball out into space on the wing for Crisp to run onto. Crisp picks up the ball, runs and spots up Checkers free all by himself 15m out from goal. Goal Collingwood.
*A really really poor last 90 seconds of the quarter. We initially had control of the football and should have created a scoring opportunity. However, Checkers slips over when about to kick the ball and miskicks it. Lester marks the ball about 30m out defensively because WHE was running towards the goal square. As usual Zorko is free. Zorko gets the ball around 50m out from our goals. Both Crisp and Sidey are pointing towards Lyons who is free on the wing but no one can get to him. Luckily nothing eventuates.
* With 36 seconds left on the clock Madgen was the ball in the back pocket. Under no pressure he misses an open Roughhead with a 20m kick. Daniher picks up the ball and snaps a point (Handy in a one point game).
*Down to 20 seconds to run down. Howe takes the kick in, runs out of goal square and proceeds to kick the ball out of bounds. FFS. We manage to survive the final seconds with no damage but it was bloody sloppy.

End of Quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Observations -

*WHE had a shocker of a game. Does not apply a strong enough sheppard for Adams and that allows Adas to get tackled. Butchered forward entry. WHE then fumbles an uncontested mark around 40m out from goal.
*Tyler Brown also had a shocker. The only time he sees McCluggage is when they stand next to each other on the wings at a centre bounce.
*Stoppage in Collingwood forward line about 30m from goal. At the stoppage Tyler Brown is on Rich. Sier snaps the ball out of the congestion and Andrews marks the ball in our goal square. Rich runs past the top of goal square and receives the uncontested handball (Where are you Tyler Brown??). Daicos is on Birchall (about 30m out from goal) but leaves Birchall as Rich is by himself. Rich kicks ball to Lester (Thomas almost creates a spoil) on boundary line about 30m out from goal. Sier is meant to be on Zorko but Sier leaves Zorko in an attempt to get Birchall. Birchall marks the ball about 40m out from our goal. Sier is caught in two minds. He is half on the mark but half pretending he is going to get back on Zorko. Sier does not impact the contest and allows Zorko to run further forward unchecked. Birchall kicks the ball about 20m to back of centre square where Lyons marks and eventually Zorko receives the hand ball from Lyons on the back of the centre square. Long kick by Zorko to Lyons at Chf (nudges out Howe) and then to Daniher. Brisbane goal. Not good enough. Another example of Sier not really being accountable to his opponent.

*Clearly we had never seen Rich play AFL before FFS. Ball is deep in our forward line. Robinson kicks the ball to Ballenden who marks about 50m from our goal. At this stage Berry and Howe are opposed to each other in our forward line. Rich runs behind Ballenden unchecked calling for the handball but is ignored. Ballenden kicks the ball to the wing where Berry receives the ball (Howe has him in eyeline but does not impact contest). Rich has streamed up the field unchecked. Rich eventually marks the kick from Berry in the centre on Brisbanes side, and WHE makes an effort to tackle Rich but Rich gets his kick away. Berry kept running from the wing towards Brisbanes goal and Howe does not chase back hard enough to Berry who marks at 50m on the flank. Rich obviously kept running as he receives the handball from Berry and bombs the goal from 50m. It is bad enough that no one bothered really follow Rich (their best kicker) up the field.....but WHE did engage with Rich but then allowed him to wander off again. Brisbane goal. Poor checking and work rate from us. Berry and Rich worked so much harder.

*38 seconds left and Lester marks in our half of the field......Birchall free again to receive the ball.........Rich is also free and receives the handball from Robinson and hits Zac Bailey. What a joke. No sure how this was not addressed at half time or three quarter time. Their two best kicks and we let them kick under little pressure. It happened ALL GAME.

*WHE, Tyler Brown, Callum Brown, Thomas, Sier - not good enough defensively.

*Highlight was Nicky D and Peter D so pumped after Josh Daicos kicked a great goal in the last quarter.

*Umpiring overall was very poor but only ourselves to blame.

End of Game.

Great summary JLC. This game hurts. I went with my daughter and we sat on on ground level and were fortunate to see Bucks and assistants run directly past us at the breaks.

With regards to that last passage what also disappointed me is that Birchall kicks that mongrel torp and Mayne almost intercepts and gets taken high, but it looks like for a split moment he'll grab the ball. De Goey is near the contest and instead of pressing up and putting pressure and potentially tackling or tying up the ball, he'll peels off forward in case Mayne wins it on his own. It was very poor and probably highlights his aggressive play but also lack of game smarts he has - tying up that play should have been his main thought not sneaking out the back to get a cheap ball.

Thanks again JLC.

Great point re De Goey. I am disappointed we did not sub Mayne out and play McCreery. Given Maynes history etc.

We definitely threw away four points that game.
