Daicos

Honourable mention to the GWS midfield for showing us how to shark taps. Would have liked to have put Crisp in but geez he butchered the ball so often in key moments. And HE only played a half but really upped his ante after the 2nd q. Howe has to stop chasing cheapies and start defending better again.

5: Madgen - no, really. One of the few players to move and present for the ball. Kept trying all night.
4: Sidebottom - got his hands on the ball a lot
3: Daicos - for actually using the ball well
2: Moore - usual good intercept marking
1: McCreery - great effort and some actual forward pressure. Has to keep his spot.

Like Sea fog said, Crisp just butchered it too much to get a vote, despite doing some good work to get the ball.

Apologies to Howe and Grundy.

First Quarter

Given the conditions i will not be harsh on fumbles etc

Opening bounce - Grundy v Mumford, Sidebottom v Daniels, Adams v Hopper, Pendles v Ward Wings - Madgen v Haynes, Mayne on the other wing. IQ v Greene. Howe on Bobby Hill

Daicos and Sier attend one centre bounce each, in place of Adams and Sidebottom. Grundy and Pendles attend all three.

Observations -

*Forty seconds into the game. De Goey receives a handball from Pendles (about 10m our side of the centre circle say 70m from goal). Maynard charges past with Bobby Hill in pursuit. De Goey loops handball over the head of Hill to Maynard. Maynard elects to try and tap the ball to Sidebottom (as opposed to taking possession). Hill pushes Maynard. Ward gets the ball and handballs to Hill who passes the ball to Himmelberg in centre of ground. Hill is still running towards the Giants goal. The kick from Himmelberg goes to a contest between IQ and Greene with Roughead lurking. Greene while on the ground manages to snap the ball towards the goal. Hill is the closest player goal side and soccers the ball off the ground for a goal. The behind the goals vision shows Maynard just jogs back and has not even reached the Giants 50m line yet. Whereas Bobby Hill got back a lot faster.

*Majority of quarter is uneventful - Giants playing a very slow possession game and we then do the same. IMO we look much the better team apart from in our 50m area.

*Madgen playing on the wing and Crisp were both very good. Daniels (i am a fan of his) around the ground looked sharp beat Noble and Bobby Hill was damaging with each of his touches.

*We seem happy to allow Ash to take easy marks in their back half.

*#1 Donlon was very generous to the Giants players - 4 free kicks which i thought were all 50:50 at best.

*30 seconds left in the quarter and we have a kick out after Finalyson kicked a point (after a free paid by Donlon against Maynard). Noble ends up with the ball about 60m out from Giants goal and handballs to Mayne (23 seconds left) instead of kicking the ball down the line along the boundary, Mayne elects to do a short sideways kick to a stationary Roughhead, Bobby Hill sees what is happening and charges down Roughead to spoil, gathers the ball and nails Finalyson with a pass. Siren goes and Finalyson nails the 50m goal after the siren. (Clearly we did not learn our lessons of last week) GOAL GIANTS.

End of Quarter

Second Quarter

Opening bounce - Grundy v Mumford, Daicos v Daniels, Adams v Hopper and Pendles v Ward Mayne and Noble start on the wings. Crisp moves into the middle during the quarter. Cox also takes two ruck contests that allowed Grundy a break (See first observation).

Observations -

*Mumford really gets on top of Grundy this quarter. By quarter end Grundy is not moving well, while old Mummy is running into our forward 50m to intercept mark. The area where Grundy should dominate in, around the ground and possessions, the honors clearly go to Mumford.

*We look better when we are unpredictable with our ball movement. The slow ball movement gets us no where.

*Wing boundary defensive side for us, Maynard decides to try and boot the ball long via the corridor. The Maynard kick ends up on the wing area of the edge of the centre square and is marked by Ward (not sure who Maynard was kicking to). Ward moves the ball upfield and basically Bobby Hill with his leg speed and pressure creates a goal for Toby Greene. 6 possessions for Hill (at that stage of the game) and 4 of those are score involvements.

*Leg speed and ball use of Daniels and Hill. Not necessarily through number (Daniels only had two touches for the quarter and Hill 1) but more so in terms of quality. We don't have anyone with that break neck speed? The commentators mentioned the quality of Daniels kicks into forward 50m - one of the best last season. (Would love him at Collingwood).

*Moore early in the quarter takes a good mark against Greene (HBF members side of the ground). Moore decides to handball sideways to IQ (Greenes opponent). IQ handballs sideways to Crisp but the umpire appears to obstruct Crisps view and Crisp as a result fumbles. Crisp manages to handball the ball outside of defensive 50m. By this stage Greene has peeled off Darcy Moore. Taranto picks the ball up and loops a handball to Finlayson. IQ runs to Finlayson to pressure him but Finlayson elects to tap the ball to an unmarked Toby Greene who snaps the goal.

*One interesting play was when Callum Brown received a free kick half forward flank maybe 60m out from goal. Giants had a big outnumber 10 v 6 in our forward 50m (a couple are near the 50m line). McCreery leads towards the pocket where Callum Brown is, that draws the spare Giants defender. Brown then kicks to the open side and De Goey marks and kicks the goal. Against the numerical odds we scored a goal.

*Only 2 touches for WHE in the first half. A few token efforts at chasing and applying pressure.

*IQ has been a tad unlucky - Greene has 3 goals but IQ has not done that much wrong really. Two of Greenes goals have been from poor turnovers from us. The third goal was when Finalyson was against Cox in the ruck. Finlayson won the clearance himself and ran out of the centre circle. IQ went to the left side (kicking side for Finlayson) who pulled his kicked to the right side where Greene had led. Greene then kicked the goal from 50m (not easy on a night like that).

*Giants have executed better but the game is close at half time.

End of quarter.

Third QUarter

Grundy v Mumford. Adams v Hopper, Pendles v Ward and Sier v Daniels. Sidey, Crisp and Greenwood all spend time in the middle.

Observations -

*Moore has the free kick on the defensive side wing (after Greene penalized for insufficient intent) - Moore kicks long down the line to a big pack of players about 60m out from our goal. At this stage Josh Thomas is opposing Lachie Ash. McCreery is on Cumming and about 10m away (corridor side) away from main contest. Thomas gets sucked into the contest to win the ball, Ash wins the ball and kicks sideways to the corridor where Hopper marks. Ash runs past and receives the handball. Josh Thomas has given up - he is hands on hips. So its up to McCreery to try and chase Ash up the middle of the ground. (IQ turns around and points to Noble to pick up Toby Greene while IQ remains on Hill and they are in middle of ground). Ash boots the ball where Greene has outrun Noble (Kelly has also outrun Howe and was the second option) and marks the ball 30m out from goal. Greene kicks the goal. (The behind the goals vision shows the play nicely).
Initially when you watch you would say McCreery did not do well enough. However, when you watch it a few times you come to see that McCreery is really covering for Josh Thomas. GIANTS GOAL. Toby Greene has four goals for the match.

*Just like last week the opposition "half back/ quarter back" is killing us. This week it is Lachie Ash.

*Next centre bounce. Sidebottom in the centre is slightly holding Tom Green off the ball, Pendles is being held in the contest. The umpire elects to pay the off the ball free kick to Tom Green (Pendles initially and rightfully so thought it was his free kick). Tom Green kicks the ball sideways to Daniels who as usual runs with the ball and hits his target in Himmelberg on the boundary about 60m out in Himmelberg. Ward is standing about 55m directly in front of goal. Himmelberg elects to pass to Ward. Callum Brown is now on Ash and they are on the other side of Ward about 20m away and leaves Ash to try and stop Ward from marking. Ward marks the ball and kicks sideways (over Callum Brown who tries to dash back) to Ash who is now free. Ash then kicks the ball out in front of Toby Greene who takes a strong mark about 25m in front of goal and kicks the goal.

Greene is bloody smart. IQ is in front of him. When IQ turns around to look at Greene, Greene points right. As soon as IQ turns back to look at Ash, Greene points left and makes his move. The body weight of IQ is going right and by the time he adjusts, Greene is off and gone. IQ tries to spoil Greene but cannot make up the ground (Nick Riewoldt mentioned that on the replay). Mayne is also there trying to help but is body checked by Daniels. Back in the goal square you can see Mumford blocking and holding Grundy to make sure Grundy cannot get to that contest. Another Giants player is doing something similar but not the same extent on Roughead. Himmelberg has dragged Moore away to the pocket. Moore tries to get to the contest but cannot. Mumford won't get a stat for that but he played an important role in Greenes goal. Greene has 5 goals.

The commentators are now referring to Ash as the "architect" - Ash has set up the only two goals of the quarter. 21 disposals with 14 minutes of game time left in third quarter.

*Maynard now switched over to Greene.

*Sier goes off injured with 7 minutes left in term. Greenwood is activated. Greenwood then attends all three centre square ball ups.

*Pendles and Greenwood put time into Ash and he is shut out of the rest of the quarter. Grundy also a bit more creative with his hit outs at stoppages.

*Sidebottom, WHE, Daicos all did some nice things and we started to control the game. McCreery brings the heat with 5 tackles for that quarter.

*Adams off with three minutes left in the quarter (Grundy fell on his leg).

*Late in the quarter, Noble about 55m out misses Pendles on the lead with a 20m pass. Ball bounces in front of Pendles. That is the kick inside 50m that Ash or Daniels don't miss and where as a team we need to improve.

End of Quarter

Fourth Quarter

Grundy v Mumford, Greenwood v Daniels, Crisp v Ward and Sidebottom v Green. Crisp and Sidebottom attended all 7 centre bounces that quarter. De Goey and Pendles did not attend one (remembering Adams and Sier off the ground). Grundy 5 and Grundy 2. Greenwood 4 and Daicos 3.

Observations -

*I felt we were on top in the last quarter but poor kicks inside 50m let us down. Not terrible kicks but not good enough if you want to win games.

*Wow oh ******* wow. Umpire 1 (Donlon) absolutely said Fcuk you that quarter and tore us a new one.
- One minute into the last quarter, Grundy pushes forward and takes a clear mark. Donlon does not award the mark and then pays a free kick to Mumford.
- Sidebottom 'boots" the ball from 30m out for a point in Giants goal - pinged for deliberate. Finlayson goal (That is a stupid rule but technically correct)
- Mumford is out on his legs. Stoppage in Giants forward 50 and Grundy is penalised for pushing Mumford. Madgen falls asleep, Greene runs past gets the handball but just misses his sixth goal.
- Pays a free kick against Moore v Tom Green for over the shoulder, advantage Kelly goal. GAME OVER. (Prior to that is our fault see below)
I am sorry but his umpiring performance over four quarters was not great.

*Seven minutes left in the game and Pendles is taken off the ground (remembering Adams is also off - two of our prime movers). Pendles had not attended one centre bounce that quarter, has been playing up forward with De Goey.

*Noble picks up the ball and is 60m out and is facing the Giants goal. Noble elects to handball back 20m (into our defensive 50m) to Howe/IQ but manages to miss them both. Howe chases the ball......eventually Himmelberg picks up the ball and snaps a kick towards the goal - Tom Green in front of Moore - Moore spoils but penalised for too high. Kelly picks up the ball and goals (umpire allows the advantage). Not good enough from Noble.

*Six minutes left in the match. Centre bounce and Mumford who is practically dead by this stage of the match manages to out jump Grundy - like WTF?. Then a few seconds later the ball has moved about 15 min to the side of centre circle near edge of square, Grundy puts a block / takes Daicos out and that allows Ward to stream out of the side of the centre with the clearance. Ward kicks the ball to around 50m from goal where Hill tries to take a speccie over IQ. That takes IQ out of contest, Hill maintains his feet and snaps the ball to Finlayson. GIANTS GOAL.

*1 Minute left in the game and Crisp has the ball in back pocket. I realise the game is over but after last week, surely we can control the ball for 60 lousy seconds? Nope. Crisp kicks long down the line and Keefe outmarks Checkers. Eventually with 40 seconds left there is a stoppage about 70m out from Giants goal. Numbers are even at the stoppage. Pies free player is at defensive 50m. Giants free player is Ward at the stoppage. Ward is next to Kelly who is holding Crisp. Grundy taps the ball at his feet. Crisp frees himself of Kelly and moves to Ward. Ward ends up with the ball, while Kelly now free has run off Crisp and receives the handball about 60m from goal, Kelly runs to 45m and drills the final goal of the game. Our defensive free player at stoppage has zero impact.

* Grundy was okay overall and had a good third term. Grundy should have delivered the TKO to Mumford in the last quarter. Mumford however is a competitive beast and emptied his tank fully. However i believe Mumford did a few blocks/shepherds etc that go unnoticed but really helped the team.

I think the margin flatter the Giants in the end. Our ball use entering 50m was not good enough and we invite pressure too often by going sideways and not hitting targets.

End of Game.

Your last para could still win the award for our worst 30 seconds for the season!! It's burned in my mind, and as you say, coming after the final 30 secs of the previous game.
