5 Grundy
4 Crisp
3 Maynard
2 McCreery
1 Pendlebury

Nice first game from McCrae. Mihocek worked hard.

5. Grundy: trounced NicNat on his home floor. Beat him not only around the ground, which you'd hope, but in the ruck contest too. Loved the tackles he was laying.
4. Mihocek: probably could've kicked straighter, but he was getting a heap of the footy and looked dangerous. Such a reliable player.
3. Crisp: some shocking turnovers, but he racked up a heap of the footy and was responsible for a lot of our attacking moves.
2. Pendlebury: went missing in the 3rd, but so did everyone in our team that wasn't in the backline. Was crucial to our strong start, am keen to see him and Macrae get some chemistry.
1. Moore: kicked a few goals, and presented really strong all night despite shocking kicks into him for the most part (besides from Sier!). His fast straight line leads reminded me of Nick Riewoldt a little bit!

HM: Noble, Maynard

5: Grundy - Easily our best IMO. Really set the tone for us early and played solid the rest of the game
Gap
4: Maynard - Was switched onto Darling and performed better as a key defender than our actual key defenders. Good ball use off half back.
3: Pendlebury - Only midfielder that impressed me. Got a fair few touches and used it very well.
Huge gap
2: McCreery - A very promising second game. Love what this kid is bringing.
1: Sidebottom - was alright without being great. Wasn't poor.

5. Grundy
4. Maynard
3. Pendlebury
2. Mihocek
1. Crisp

Maynard could have had the 5, but that first quarter from Grundy was epic.

5 Grundy
4 Checkers
3 Maynard
2 Crisp
1 Pendles

*Cox unlucky to be dropped imo. Thought against GWS in poor weather, he was far from our worst.
*WHE was "managed" - what was the story with that? It is round 5 ffs and last week he did nothing for a half.

First Quarter

Grundy v Nic Nat, Greenwood v Kelly, Pendles v Redden, De Goey v Sheed. Jackson Macrae gets a taste of the action with three centre bounces. Cameron attends four centre bounces, to allow Grundy to play forward.

Observations -

* That quarter should be the benchmark for Grundy. Grundy lays 3 tackles which is more than in last weeks game. Grundy took advantage of when Nic Nat was on the bench and also exposed Vardy. Rather than come off the ground he pushed forward.

* Once again it is one of the small defenders / quarter backs that does the damage. Duggan is the architect. Looked like Thomas was meant to be on him.

*Early on in the quarter, WCE have at least two spare defenders in defence.

*In the back half we are sloppy (again). There is the Crisp kick across goal to Noble of all people that is intercepted by Brander. I have no idea why Noble was calling for the ball as Kennedy was also in a position to intercept. (GOAL WCE). The first goal to Oscar Allen was also sloppy. One of Maynard/IQ should have tried to sheppard Mayne / keep Allen away. (GOAL WCE)

*The longer the quarter goes on, the more Tim Kelly spreads / peeling off from contest and becomes damaging. Greenwood cannot go with him.

*The Pendles spot of McCreery when entering forward is brilliant. WCE had two extra defenders in the whole forward 50m but more importantly three in the hot spot. One of those is McGovern. Most others would have bombed long and McGovern would have marked.

*Moore/Grundy/Cameron up forward worked well. We finally had enough marking power to combat McGovern and Barrass. At the very least it kept the defenders honest. Moore kicks a goal himself and provides a pass to Grundy.

*A very good quarter of football. So far, so good.

Second Quarter

Grundy v Nic Nat, Daicos v Redden, Greenwood v Kelly and Pendles v Sheed. Key matchup is Darling v Keane. Howe begins on Oscar Allen, Maynard is wasted on Zac Langdon (Eventually moved onto Darling).

Observations -

* I think everyone would have observed that Keane was out of his depth - its clear he has not grown up with football as Darling loses him easily. Will not bother to say anything apart from he failed to even halve contests.

*Redden destroyed us that quarter. Redden worked over Daicos (majority), Mayne, Sidey, Thomas and Macrae. Redden attended four centre bounces and also played off a wing. Redden worked harder and got to more dangerous spots. Apart from Mayne none of those opponents are really defensively inclined.

*Howe is injured this quarter and De Goey ruled out. Mobile phone saga etc. Sier was off injured last week, yet it was thought a good idea to make him the sub. Sier is activated with 11 minutes left in the quarter, only attends two centre bounces and does not work hard enough around the ground.

*We are essentially one player down for the rest of the game and probably two if you want to count Keane. There is a couple contest in the WCE forward line where we have the outnumber but Keane is basically a passenger.

*Defensively WCE protect the corridor of the forward line much better. They recognise that is where the danger is. McGovern is smart enough to peel off and occupy that area. Whereas our spare defender tends to be Mayne and or Crisp and they sometimes seem distracted about protecting the boundary side. (The commentators pick up on that).

*Buckley kept Moore in the forward line way too long - I don't know if he was trying to prove a point i.e defence first mantra, but when Howe went off injured then surely Moore switches back?

*On one occassion Darling gives about two or three efforts and it culminates in Darling winning a free kick for holding the ball. Whereas Maynard pretty much gave one effort and that was it.

*Our wingman during that quarter - Madgen, Noble, Mayne, Daicos do not win enough of the ball. Compare that to Gaff/Redden

*Crisp has only attended one centre bounce for the match (zero that quarter). Surely Crisp should have been utilised more in midfield?

*Thomas and Callum Brown combined for a nice goal. Thomas intercepted and Brown snapped truly. However what they do is few and far between.

*Technically we are still in the game but WCE battered us that quarter tbh.

End of Quarter

*Buckley at half time interview mentions they need to get their match ups right behind the ball. Lost a few key one on ones etc.

Third Quarter

Grundy v Nic Nat, Crisp v Kelly, Pendles v Redden, Sier v Sheed. Crisp attends 6 centre bounces. Cal Brown sneaks in for two along with Macrae. Sier only attends three. If Sier is not attending centre bounces then i am not sure what purpose he seves.

Moore starts in attack. Maynard is on Kennedy, Roughie on Darling and Keane on Allan.

Observations -

*Crisp finally starts in the middle and wins first clearance. Pendles now has the role on Redden. It seems the WCE plan is to move Nelson onto whoever Reddens opponent is and then allow Redden to roam free.

*We allow McGovern to get free to easily in defensive half. McGovern reads the ball better than Checkers and knows when to peel off and make himself an outlet from defence.

*McGovern has peeled off Checkers and takes a mark in the back half along boundary about 60m from our goal. At this stage Josh Thomas is on Andrew Gaff on defensive 50m. McGovern kicks the ball about 30m along the boundary where Darling leads up on the wing and marks ahead of Grundy. Nic Nat is now free and marks about 60m out from goal. Thomas has chased Gaff up the ground and by that stage has handed Gaff over to Noble to look after. Noble is aware of this and is close enough to Gaff. Nic Nat has the mark about 60m from goal. At the time Nic Nat takes the mark, Noble makes the decision to run off Gaff into our backline, so Gaff says thank you very much and runs past Nic Nat for the handball receive and kicks the ball to about 20m out from goal (Noble has zero influence on contest - he is still running back). It is a two on two contest. Keane v Allen (Keane infringed but umpire ignored) and Roughie v Kennedy. Free kick to Kennedy. GOAL WCE. Almost every one on one contest or two on one contest Keane is involved in, Keane either gives away a free kick or has zero influence. Noble so far this season seems to get caught a lot in no mans land.

*Next centre bounce. Pendles wins the clearance and kicks through middle of ground to 50m out. McGovern is at the contest with Darcy Cameron (Cameron and McGovern are now opponents) and effects the spoil. Darcy Cameron hangs around at the contest, whilst McGovern peels off and goes to the hot spot in front of goals. Eventually Crisp gets the ball and kicks long to Darcy Moore v Barrass but of course McGovern is free and spoils.

*There is a stoppage about 50m from our goal. Callum Brown is meant to be on Dom Sheed. Callum Brown does not pay any attention to Sheed, who peels off and collects an easy possession and brings the ball up field.

*Another occassion Darcy Cameron is still on McGovern. WCE have been switching the ball in the back half. They eventually switch back to the side McGovern is on. After McGovern leaves defensive 50m Darcy Cameron does not bother trying to man up etc. McGovern is ignored as an option for a mark at half back, however he keeps running , receives a handball receive uncontested and kicks the ball 50m to Allen who marks all by himself. Keane is in no mans land up the ground and is just casually jogging back and its left up to Madgen to chase Allen. WCE GOAL. Allen starts a centre bounce at full forward and appears to be running / working Keane into the ground.

The move is made and Moore goes onto McGovern, Cameron goes into the ruck and Sier is on Redden.

*McGovern eventually comes off the ground, so Barrass becomes the "loose man". Through hard running he manages to create a 3 on 2 and take a defensive mark.

*The next goal is about fine margins and skill execution. Crisp (playing on Sheed) has the ball at around 50m and spots Pendles free about 35 from goal. Rotham reads the pass and intercepts the ball. Rotham kicks the ball to Allen at half back along boundary. At this stage Sheed is charging from defensive 50m and Crisp is in pursuit. The ball is kicked along the boundary and is marked by Waterman - Keane has his back to the ball and is caught out of position. Waterman then does a 20m pass to Sheed who is at the 50m line. Sheed wheels around and nails the goal from 50m. Kudos to Crisp for actually chasing Sheed from defensive 50m to forward 50m. However, he really needed to nail that pass. GOAL WCE.

*The wheels are now officially off. Crisp is probably buggered but remains at centre bounce but is now on Kelly. Sheed is at half forward opposed to Mayne and IQ is on Waterman. Next centre bounce is poor from the umpire but favours Grundy. Grundy tries a deft little tap to Callum Brown but it is sharked by Nic Nat who bursts out of the centre and loops a handball to Cripps. Cripps fumbles, so IQ leaves Waterman to attack the contest, whilst Mayne peels of Sheed and runs towards goal. Kelly receives the handball and in turn handballs to Waterman who is now free and Waterman spots up and kicks to Sheed who ends up marking the ball all alone about 40m out from goal. GOAL WCE. Two in a minute for Sheed.

*But wait there is more. Crisp is on Sheed in WCE forward line. Waterman marks about 80m in front of Greenwood along the boundary. At this stage Crisp is with Nic Nat at the 50m line and IQ is with Sheed also at the 50m. Waterman kicks long to about 30m from goal where Nic Nat now is and Vardy floats across the pack but spills the mark in front of the pack. Keane eventually runs the ball out of defence and kicks back to where the ball came from. Duggan wins the ball for WCE and delivers a short pass to Waterman who marks. Waterman kicks to Cripps along the boundary about 50m from goal who is by himself but Cripps spills the chest mark. Crisp is now on Tim Kelly. At this stage IQ leaves Sheed (who is about 40m from goal) to follow the kick of Cripps to the pocket. Allen has a break on Madgen while Crisp tries to pressure Allen after Allen had managed to keep the ball in. (IQ Is now running with Tim Kelly towards goals). Sheed is pretty much standing 35m out from goal by himself. Allen handballs to Sheed who snaps his third goal in a matter of minutes. GOAL WCE

*Only ten seconds left in the quarter to survive. Greenwood is now on Sheed. Dead easy. Nic Nat v Cameron in the ruck. Macrae is in the middle with Pendles now on Kelly. Gaff is on the wing with Noble. Surely Noble must realise that his role is to nullify Gaff? After a bit of fumbling ball spilling around in the centre, Gaff gets the ball and kicks long to Allen who marked ahead of Keane. Luckily the siren just went and no mark paid.

*A terrible last 5 minutes of that quarter. Sier the sub who should be fresh is no where to be seen.

End of Quarter

Fourth Quarter

Grundy v Nic Nat, Pendles v Redden, Sidey v Kelly and Macrae v Sheed. (Huge show of faith by Buckley after Sheeds impact last quarter). Crisp does not attend any centre bounces in the last quarter. Macrae attended five that quarter.

Observations -

* Witherden does two exceptional kick ins.

*Darling receives a free kick for a push in the back by Maynard about 20m out from goal straight in front. We have Madgen, Keane and Crisp all loose but they do not influence the contest. Whereas when the ball is in our forward line, Barrass and McGovern know where to stand to block up the corridor.

*Keane still gives Allen too much space. Allen marks and goals directly in front of goals. Once again no magpie defenders bother to block the corridor.

*Checkers leaves the ground so essentially two players down.

*If we actually had key defenders then Moore as a forward would work. Moore kicked three goals and one out on the full so easily, could have had four goals and that is without touching the ball for two quarters.
