Edit: Also am I really seeing Quaynors name thrown around. 47% off Half Back is pathetic and 5 clangers to go along with it. A bare minimum off Half Back is 70% considering it is the easiest position on the ground to hit targets.

Beau gets a vote because he is a rare beast in our team prepared to tackle. I cannot put a midfielder in. their opponents killed them. That includes Pendlebury who got a lot of the ball but did not impact. Their mids were great, especially at clearances. Pendlebury also handballed to a Sun for a goal.

First Quarter

Grundy (203cm, 108kg) v Graham (195cm, 96kg), Pendles v Touk, Daicos v Hugh Greenwood, De Goey v Swallow.
Moore started forward (203cm, 100kg) v Farrar (191cm, 77kg)
Mihocek v Ballard
IQ v Rankine, Crisp v Holman, Keane v Burgess, Noble v Flanders, Maynard v Corbett, Roughie v King, Markov v Callum Brown, Darcy Cameron v Collins

Observations -

* Buckley failed to exploit the Moore v Farrar match-up. Moore had a huge advantage, yet Moore was pretty quiet that quarter.

* Keane in one on one situations still looks poor. He does not have the footy smarts to understand where the ball is going and misjudges it. Either out marked, slips over or gives away a free. When he is an option out of defence, he seems okay and also lays a decent tackle.

*At the forward stoppages the Suns block for Rankine i.e. they block IQ and clear the path for Rankine. The commentators highlighted this once for the goal Rankine kicked but it happened more than once. In the Rankine goal the commentators correctly highlighted that Noble needed to be alert to the danger. Noble was close by but was oblivious to the danger. From the games i have watched so far this season, Noble seems very slow to react to situations.

*Umpiring has the commentators confused. Two incidents Gary Lyon called as great tackle and a push, Collingwood free kick, only for the decisions to go against us. Highlights that umpiring was not great.

*The Gold Coast plan from a kick out appeared to be, get Grundy to commit to one side of the ground and then switch to the other side of the ground. Gold Coast keep a few spares (Markov is one) in the middle of the ground, so they can switch to either side. Our forwards seem very slow to react (and allow their direct opponents too much space) to the switching of play. We defend from too deep - we pretty much only start defending from the wings.

*Gold Coast were flooding back into our defensive 50m in huge numbers. Nathan Murphy has the ball on the wing and would be looking up to our forward 50 and it is 15 Suns to 9 Collingwood in terms of numbers.

*De Goey who only returned to the side, not really working hard enough on transition.

(I am going to watch the quarter again tonight)

End of Quarter.

Second Quarter

Grundy v Graham, De Goey v Greenwood, Pendles v Miller, Daicos v Swallow
WHE started on the wing against Lukosius, Poulter on the other wing against Ellis

Observations -

* De Goey has had a shocker - usually he can at least be good up forward or midfield. Today has been poor in both areas of the ground. Lemmens has beaten him in most contests in our forward 50m and the rare occassion De Goey is in a good position, our disposal lets us down.

*The quarter started well as we had repeat forward entries but failed to kick a goal. But at least for the first time in the game we were able to lock the ball in our forward line.

*Prior to re watching matches, i did not think much of Noble as player. He is actually worse than i thought. So often he has kicks under no pressure but misses the target by quite a bit (for an A.F.L player) - If every player was the height of Mason Cox then maybe he would be ok.

*I also question the accuracy of the AFL stats. An example is that for that quarter Noble is credited with 7 possessions (6 kicks, 1 handball) at 71% disposal efficiency with 0 turnovers for that quarter. What a load of nonsense. With 16 minutes left in the quarter Noble picks up the ball from a Lukosius kick and kicks the ball straight to Will Powell (Turnover 1). With 9 minutes left in quarter, Noble receives the handball from Murphy and kicks it over the leading De Goey and it is out on the full (Surely that is a turnover?).

*One centre bounce Touk Miller is opposed to WHE on the wing. Grundy wins the tap out but De Goey fumbles. That allows Weller to gather the ball and handball to Miller who has run into the middle, Miller charges through the middle and kicks the ball long into their forward line where Corbett marks the ball about 40m from goal. While WHE seems caught in two minds and then content to let Miller go and just jog back into defence. GOAL SUNS.

*With four minutes left in quarter, WHE has kicked the ball out on the full in our forward line. Ballard is taking the resultant free kick in the back pocket. In the corridor Miller is on the attacking side of Josh Thomas (who i guess is trying to guard space). Thomas looks back and motions for "someone else" to pick up Miller who peels off further......Thomas then realises there is no one else, so has to end up chasing Miller himself. Miller marks the ball at defensive 50m. McCreery allows Markov to peel off him and charge past Miller for the handball. Markov runs through middle of the ground and kicks long and deep into our forward line but luckily Maynard saves the day.

*With three minutes left in the quarter Bowes kicks backwards and Ellis takes a mark around the defensive 50m line in the corridor. Murphy is the man on the mark. McCreery is on Weller in the middle of ground and allows Weller to peel off and take the mark. Murphy after the mark was taken by Ellis seems to believe that his job is done and starts running in the opposite direction (have no idea why). Whereas Ellis keeps running past and receives the handball from Weller and charges through the middle (Murphy ends up chasing but its too late). End result is a mark to Corbett inside 50m but ends up being only a point to the Suns.

*With one minute 35 left in the quarter, Ellis wins a free kick for holding the ball and process to kick that lucky goal from 60m, whereby we have a 3 on 1 contest (Grundy, Roughie, Crisp v Corbett) and not one of our players could mark the ball, let alone touch it. GOAL Suns. Not good enough.

*One minute 15 seconds left - for the next bounce you can see in the Suns forward line around the 50m line it is Noble v Ainsworth, Crisp v Flanders and Mayne v Weller. Maynard looks like he is providing instructions to Keane. Grundy wins the tap out but just misses Pendles, Hugh Greenwood collects the ball, and has Ainsworth streaming into the middle to collect the handball (where is Noble? - about 10m behind, gets lost in traffic, gives up and running back to defence), Ainsworth runs the arc and kicks to Corbett who marks 50m on the lead. Luckily Crisp intercepts the resultant Corbett kick. However, the question is, how did Ainsworth get away from Noble so easily?

*Callum Brown is too often a spectator. He might do one good thing a quarter, sometimes two but for the rest of it, he is not great. He does not see to either have the work ethic or endurance to really apply consistently good defensive pressure.

End of Quarter

Third Quarter

Grundy v Graham, De Goey v Greenwood, Thomas v Anderson, Pendles v Miller. Murphy on wing v Ellis, WHE V Lukosius

Observations

*First 30 seconds, De Goey does well to find space from Greenwood inside 50m but spills an easy mark. Dead set having a mare of a game.

*Next 30 seconds. Keane takes a one on one mark against Burgess MCC members boundary side about 80m from our goal. Grundy has provided a lead in the corridor about 60m from our goal (Burgess is behind him). Murphy is free on the 50m hff members side and that is where the kick goes. Both Grundy and Graham have now moved inside our forward 50m. Murphy takes the mark. Murphy has the ball 55m out from our goal on the MCC members flank. Suns have three spare players inside our forward 50m. Graham is about 40m from our goal and Grundy has given him 5m space. Graham appears to read the ball better off the Murphy kick and really puts in an effort to mark the contest and floats across the pack (Cameron is held out of the contest and Ballard pushes Moore too easily) and takes the mark. Grundy does not even make the contest. Graham is a bloody nobody and puts in a bigger effort than Grundy.

*15 min left in quarter. Nice gather by Doey in the middle and kicks the ball inside our forward 50m. The work rate from Moore was really poor. He looks like he is trotting around. Ballard had a much higher work rate.

*We have a couple of repeat entries into our forward 50m. Pendles is genuinely the only player who knows how to kick a football. Anyway Pendles has the mark around 60m from goal in the corridor (15 minutes 11). Grundy is walking hands on hips about 80m out towards our goal. By the time Pendles kicks the ball towards Darcy Moore, Grundy is about 55m from our goal (he is getting there folks! metre by metre). Touk Miller runs across and spoils the Moore mark. WHE picks up the loose ball and runs back to our forward 50m, handballs to Mayne about 70m out from our goal, Mayne handballs to Pendles (14 min 50) Grundy is hands on hips just watching the game from 45m out. The ball is kicked into about 30m out from goal and Graham (Grundy's opponent) takes a big defensive mark. So Grundy had about 20 seconds to move maybe 20m?

*Early on in the quarter Keane played well. Taken two nice marks and been very good.

*About 9 minutes 36 left in quarter, IQ kicks long to McCreery but Ellis intercepts and marks. McCreery could have easily cracked the sads and given up. Instead McCreery puts in a superb chase and multiple efforts. McCreery starts of in the MCC forward pocket and "follows" the chain of possession all the way to the AFL members wing where he tackles Anderson for holding the ball.

Lets break that down. What is evident is that at one stage Callum Brown and McCreery are both in the corridor about 20m apart. McCreery is closer to our goals and Callum Brown is closer to the 50m line (and the wing where the ball eventually ends up). Callum Brown just trots around. McCreery has now run to Ellis who is near the top of the goal square. and ends up near the behind post. WHE Is marking Noah Anderson about 50m from goal with Callum Brown trailing by about 15m. WHE leaves Anderson to try and run down Markov who takes the mark. That leaves Anderson free. Callum Brown finally is awake to what is happening but McCreery is in turbo mode and gets to Anderson first. Incredible by McCreery and dead set pathetic by Callum Brown.

*Dominate and once again against the run of play, the Suns manage to isolate King v Keane and the result is a goal. Defensively in one on one's Keane does not seem sure of himself in terms of positioning and how to use his body. Way too easy for King who marks easily on his chest, runs on and kicks the goal. Much much earlier in the build up Moore was dead set terrible in a marking contest against Collins. Moore has been horrible thus far.

*Murphy takes that superb mark running back with the flight of the ball.

*Rankine once again at a forward stoppage in forward pocket near behind post is too good for IQ. Daicos not alert to the danger and Rankine bursts through and gets a hurried kick away to top of goal square where it is Greenwood v Maynard. Maynard manages to bring the ball to ground. Rankine has followed through to top of goal square and gets the little tap away from the grasp of Keane (who was a spare man at stoppage but is a passenger really). Swallow (who was Crisps opponent) snaps from 15m out for a goal. Poor from IQ and poor from Keane. I don't think its a lack of effort from Keane, i just think he is not that switched on with AFL. GOAL SUNS

*Great long goal from Noble (just to show i am not bias).

Greenwood uses Keane as a mini step ladder and marks. Greenwood did not start at the stoppage. Watching behind the goals footage and it is a dead set replica of the King mark from earlier. Keane can see Greenwood and is about 10m from him (Greenwood is goal side). Keane barely makes body contact in the end. It was almost like Keane shepherded Holman out of the way and made it easier for Greenwood lol. GOAL SUNS. (Next centre bounce Keane is still on Greenwood)

*People talk about in game coaching etc. How on earth Buckley has not moved Moore back to defence by this stage of the game is staggering. I am a fan of Moore playing forward but clearly today it is not working and we have an apprentice down back being calved up. Surely you switch them? Surely you need to be adaptable as a coach during a game?

*One minute left in quarter, Greenwood reads the play and wins the ball in the contest whilst Keane is just observing about 15m from the contest. Luckily the kick that eventually occurs from Miller is out on the full.

*It is kind of funny that one of our strong suits usually is the ability of De Goey to play midfield and or forward etc. Greenwood in some ways did that to us in the latter part of the quarter. Dew managed to create and exploit some good match ups.

*Sorry but this loss is on Buckley and his lack of in game coaching.

End of Quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Moore (still up forward), De Goey also starts forward. Suns have left Greenwood up forward against Keane. IQ is on Rankine.
Centre bounce - Grundy v Graham, Daicos v Anderson, Sidey v Touk, Pendles v Swallow

Observations -

*16 minutes left in the game. Murphy appears to have come on the ground and runs to Powell on our half forward line about 60m from goal. There is a stoppage on the Olympic stand wing. The ball is eventually handballed by Pendles to Poulter who swings onto his left foot and pumps the ball inside 50m. Murphy runs towards the corridor (away from Poulter towards Southern Stand). Whereas Powell reads the kick and run towards 40m from goal (Olympic Stand) and eventually marks the ball essentially uncontested. Moore v Collins is on one side about 5m away while Farrar v Checkers is about 5m away but Checkers almost spoils the mark. Even when he realises where the ball is going Murphy just jogs (like he is running laps). At this stage Callum Brown is v Markov and about 20m away from the mark. Had Murphy read the ball a bit better he could have at least either spoilt Powell, stopped Powell from making the contest etc. So instead of a Collingwood mark or stoppage inside 50m its a Suns mark.

From that mark to Powell. You can see Callum Brown v Bowes at the 50m from our goal. Same scenario as earlier in the game where Brown signals for someone else to pick up Bowes. No one else is there to help so Brown then tries to do something but its too late. Mark to Bowes. Crisp mans the mark and Callum forgets about Markov who slips out the back and receives the handball. Crisp is the player that tries to tackle Markov who switches the play with a long kick to the wing. (Callum Brown has really done nothing apart from jog around). You can see Mayne was running towards the contest to try and impede Markov. but Mayne doesn't impact and now has a 40m gap to make up to catch Weller. At this stage you can see Keane with Greenwood about 60m from Suns goal on the MCC members side (opposite side to where Greenwood eventually marks).

Weller marks the ball (WHE you can see him chasing 40m away although he was on Lukosius in the lead up) in an acre of space (no one within 30m) on the wing/flank (Southern Stand side). Weller kicks long and Greenwood has put a 20m gap on Keane, marks about 20m from goal in the AFL members side Ponsford pocket - Keane must have been doing a tour of the MCG lol. Maynard is with Corbett about 5m away. Maynard switches off and Corbett runs towards the goal square - Handball to Corbett who is free in the goal square. SUNS GOAL GAME OVER. (15 min 34 left - so happened in 26 seconds). Ripped to absolute shreds in that passage of play.

*13 minutes left in game Moore is taken off the ground. Not sure why he was not moved down back?

*At the stoppage in our forward line, Greenwood is on Steele Sidebottom and Miller is on Daicos. Thomas is against Holman. From the stoppage Greenwood lays a monster tackle on Daicos. Daicos is on the ground after the tackle and that allows Miller to run free. When Sidebottom has the handball from Daicos, you can see Crisp in the background about 10m away. Keane receives the handball from Sidebottom, Miller tries to tackle Keane, Crisp receives the handball from Keane runs out from our defensive 40m with Miller hot in pursuit. As Crisp gets to the defensive 50m Miller lunges to try and lay the tackle and Anderson tackles Crisp and bring him down but Crisp manages to get a kick away but Holman picks up the errant kick (Thomas is about 10m away and gives a token jog effort) from Crisp and kicks to Corbett who marks 40m from goal. GOAL SUNS. Suns much more desperate. Apart from McCreery and Mayne there is very little urgency from anyone else.

*Corbett destroyed Maynard that quarter.

*Moore dead set is not at the races today. From a suns kick out by Ballard to Ellis in the pocket, you can see Moore jog towards Ellis who marks. Ellis kicks 20m to Rankine. Ellis runs off looking for the next possession, whereas Moore has switched off and does not bother chasing. Ball ends up out of bounds on the wing. You can see in the behind the grounds vision that Moore is hands on hips and kind of feeling sorry for himself. We eventually kick a goal after Sidebottom kicks the ball inside 50m and Mihocek marks and goals. Even then it is Mihocek kind of consoling Moore after the goal is kicked.

The one positive from that passage of play is that Grundy is up forward and keeps Collins occupied and out of the contest, thus allowing Mihocek to mark against Bowes.

*Grundy is at full forward for the next centre bounce. Next passage of play Collins holds Grundy in the contest and gives away a free kick. Grundy being up forward has created our only two goals for the quarter.

So a small sample size is building of how the forward line looks more potent with Grundy playing forward.

*In this game the two youngsters Macrae and Poulter were both passengers along with Keane and Moore. Callum Brown was also poor. So at any one stage imo its like playing with up to five less players on the field.

End of Match
Thanks JLC. This was by far the most frustrating, if not worst match we played all year across all facets.

I think post this game the Moore back move was made, and that we'd have a more defensive element to our play which hadn't been the case with ANZAC day and this match to an extent.

Well done for getting through this one...

This was shocking coaching really and our worst loss for the year. Players like Corbett who have done really nothing since were dining out with lots of contested marks. Their forward line was killing ours, why didn't they move Moore back when he showed he is clearly not up to it as a forward?

When they moved him fwd, they said they'll leave him settle for a few weeks to see how he goes rather than shunting him back and forth. Irrespective where he played, we really should have won that game, on paper anyhow.
