Yep, certain posters repeatedly stated “anyone but Thilthorpe” because apparently it was a bad thing that someone could play in two positions. They also carried on as though the groin injury he carried that year was pretty much career threatening while in the same breath saying that we should draft the kid who had just had a knee reconstruction.

Look, he’s only played one game and done well so who knows how things will turn out but I thought he was undervalued on this board - not that I was disappointed in who we did pick though.

Would still take the genuine KPF and it's still not close. Lets be real the top 7 (including JUH) are all going to be stars. It is why NO-ONE was trading a pick inside that area last year. There will be a drop after the top 7 imo long-term.

Stengle after what happened last year would be the most high profile for me. There is no way a club take the risk despite his talent. Needs to show it for a whole year. I could be wrong and a contender may give him a spot but I can't see it. Would need to be plenty of clauses in the contract.

I don't know what Stengle has to do with the AFL.com article failing to recognise McCartin being in consideration.

They can't list everyone you know. No issue with the article. Rather read about the other ones anyway

Given that our first pick will likely be in the 8-12 range, I’m surmising that Paddy Mac could easily be snaffled by another club if he’s going well?

Having said that, I’m not entirely clear on how the mid-season draft works. I assume his current status on the Swans roster doesn’t give us any “first right of refusal”?

Aside from the kids listed, there was not much to be excited about. I doubt Stengle will attract interest given the behavioural issues unless the Pies have a pick (they specialise in having idiots on their list)

The kids listed interest me more actually.

While I definitely agree with your sentiments on Thilthorpe, this board as a collective loses it's mind around the trade period and draft. Last year Archie Perkins was nearly stoned to death for wanting to stay home, Will Phillips, like all Victorians, was still attached to his mother's teat, DGB was awaiting his Knighthood for saying he wanted to be the best player in the AFL (who doesn't?), and Braeden Campbell was the over-rated academy kid who would never be bid on in the top five.

Best to not use aspersions cast in the heat of off-season duress against people :p

First in first dressed basically. There are no players "tied" to clubs in the mid season draft.

It wasn't so much the "prefer others" nature of the Thilthorpe discussion though but the certainty that he would be a bust.

But you won't see any "i was wrongs" on here. Just doubling down of stupidity. Just like the Gulden bullshit.

Yep, I’ve come to love the trade and draft period - BF provides absolutely hours of entertainment! As you say, this board does indeed lose its mind and there are countless incredible comments made around that time. ;)

The Gulden bullshit? Refresh my memory please

Ive been thinking a bit about Paddy and I wondered if we have some kind of contract in place with him to play in the Swans ECFL team? And if so, does that mean he is tied to us at minimum for the rest of this season?

I dunno... the way Ben Silvagni joined the club and said wham, bam, thank you ma'am and ****ed off would suggest these contracts might not be that binding.

Would be an unlawful restraint of trade.

U can't stop a bloke earning a living elsewhere.

However I don't think any AFL club will pick up Paddy this year.
Too much legal risk with concussion.

At the moment I doubt anyone at the Club is having more fun than Paddy.

His ECFL contract would have a standard release clause in the case of an AFL offer.

I expect Silvagni nicked off back to Melbourne after being told he was not guaranteed a MSD pick up from us.

Probably just missed his mum.
Which is understandable?

Just think there will be a very risk averse approach with Paddy.

... and yet he has a contract with and is playing for our ECFL team.

As for Silvagni I am happy he left. Serge was a mongrel. Stephen was overhyped as a FB. There were two far better FBs at Carlton. SOS making the AFL Team of the Century was a complete joke.

My understanding is Silvagni was moving to Sydney for uni and we approached him when we found out he would be up here. I imagine his uni stuff has changed so he moved back home.

If we do not pick Paddy up, what sort of player should we go for?

Hope to hell we do not go for a ruck unless we know for sure Sinkers is retiring. Three on a shortened list is a lot to carry given our mids are poor whether our ruck is winning or not.

Personally I think it is useless picking up mids - they will not play there for years. Best I think we go for a KPP - if not Paddy, next best.

I feel like we lack a meat-axe.

Southby presumably is one, not sure who the other would be?

Watching defenders one on one this season I'd be fascinated to see how SOS would go. Human octopuses are generally frowned upon in the modern umpiring interpretations.

I think no NAB league last year may mean by mid-season a few unheralded players (who weren't selected in last year's draft) may pop up.

I recall Clayton Oliver was seen as a borderline draftee going into the 2015 season and missed selection for the U18 championship, but by the end of the year B&F at the Bushrangers, Morrish medal and pick 4 at the draft.

There were a few Victorian rucks overlooked in last year's draft, but they get a chance to show their wares now and while it is generally a long development process I wouldn't mind taking a chance with a younger ruck on our list as I think trading in a ruck is going to become an increasing costly exercise.
