Ex-AFL players seeking new homes and fresh starts, NAB League prospects out to make their mark at the highest level, hopefuls from the state leagues and even local footballers are among the list of nominations for this year’s AFL national draft.
Nominations close at 3pm today.

As of Monday morning, 717 players had put their names forward to the AFL, including former Blue Levi Casboult and delisted Tiger Patrick Naish, who has been linked with St Kilda.

Four-time Werribee VFL best and fairest Matt Hanson has also lodged his form.
Zdenek Hostalek, 27, who played three senior games for Tooleybuc Manangatang in the Central Murray league this year also took the time to fill out the paperwork.

2021 NAB AFL National Draft nominations as at 11.30am on Monday, November 15

Do you have any more eligible dads under the father/son rule from when Fremantle FC was inaugurated? i.e. 150 H&A or finals games at any of South Fremantle, East Fremantle, Perth or Swan Districts before 1995?
I think Maurice Rioli Jnr was the last one.
Unfortunately very good players were attracted to play in Victoria over the WAFL and then other clubs have found themselves with access to that legacy.

The next ones might be the current coach's son, Mundy's boys, Pav's boys, Rodger Hayden's boys

We had a Rioli available last year, alas he also qualified for Richmond :-( , the issue is if you were good enough in the old days, you went off to play in the old VFL. Not WAFL, although quite a few did both ie Polly Farmer, Rioli, Peake

GWS have 18 players who current qualify for their sons, if applicable, to be father son picks.
Of these 18 players the oldest is Shane Mumford and sixteen are still playing AFL.

So GWS shouldn't expect any father son picks for over twenty years. Fremantle is in a similar position, we have about 40 players in the entire history who qualify as father sons and more than half of them were playing football still in the last five to ten years. The lag on that will be another ten to fifteen years.

The inequity comes from talented local families becoming VFL club players during the early period of the the game going national.
I'm not sure about Fremantle families being father/son eligible for Vic clubs, but I thought it was interesting that the original Danihers are from NSW, and James Hird was born and raised in Canberra (his family was from Victoria though, his grandfather played for, coached at and was president of Essendon and his dad played a handful of games for us too). Kids like that coming through these days would be in the GWS academy...

I wish we still had a state of origin style thing, along similar lines to the TAC U18s teams (SA, WA, VC, VM, Allies). The EJ Whitten game and the AFLX nonsense aren't really the same at all.

It's the same issue Tasmania would face coming into the league. Big family names and legacies are already tied to existing interstate clubs.

Mostly in the late 80s I think, perhaps early 90s, after the then-VFL started paying worthwhile wages but before the draft really existed or worked properly (like clubs didn't put much money or effort into scouting, great players went really late, lots of early busts, and some players getting drafted someplace they didn't want to go and then simply refusing and staying to play in the lower leagues instead).

It's the same issue Tasmania would face coming into the league. Big family names and legacies are already tied to existing interstate clubs.
Would probably get grandfathering clauses like the WA and SA clubs did though, and at least an NGA, if not the equivalent of a Northern Academy to boost local pathways. I'm not sure quite how bad the grassroots are but I was under the impression it had withered somewhat with soccer being the most played sport by Tassie kids, I think it's one of the things Clarkson is focused on in his gap year.

Just saying, the AFL was formed in 1990.

Peter Daicos played 68 AFL games...Since the FS state club eligibility for non-Vic clubs have been removed, surely the same for Vic clubs and VFL eligibility too.

Plus the South Australian and Western Australian-based clubs cant match a bid on NGA players now in the top 40, whereas Vic clubs can match from picks 20-40....how does that work?

If Mitchito Owens and Marcus Windhager were linked with a WA club, they couldn't be matched if they go in the top 30, but they can in Vic.

Let's talk equity...

That was also the period where your dad working in the admin of the club was enough to get you straight onto the list.

The benefits of previous systems take a long time to filter out. Hawkins, best player in the draft, 3rd round - so they get Selwood too. Over a decade of wins there even with the system changed.

Just takes a while :)

Plus the South Australian and Western Australian-based clubs cant match a bid on NGA players now in the top 40, whereas Vic clubs can match from picks 20-40....how does that work?
That's only from next season.

Clubs in WA can't match Metro Indigenous NGA talent bids inside the top 40 this year, and can't match any NGA bids inside the top 40 next year.

What are these 'grandfathering clauses' you talk of for QA and SA clubs?

This year, refer to Jesse Motlop. He's eligible as a NGA for Freo, but because he'll probably go top 40, Freo can't match.

Meanwhile, Saints can match their 2 kids in the same range...

Yep, sounds about right.

When each of those clubs entered the league they were given father/son access to the sons of players who had played for particular state league clubs in the WAFL/SANFL. For the SA clubs, the father had to play 200 games for their respective attached teams (about 4-5 each) and for WA the threshold is 150 games.

All qualifying games had to be played before the year that those clubs entered the league, so you end up with anomalies like Bryce Gibbs, whose dad played 193 games before the Crows joined the league and so he didn't qualify and got drafted to Carlton.

Rule 8.2 of the AFL Rules.

Just to elaborate on this, the WA (and SA) clubs agreed to not be able to select Metro Indigenous talent within the top 40 so that the pleas of local elders could be answered allowing metro based young men to be within the program.

So it's actually an inclusion of limited eligibility not a restriction of it.

The difference is that if you're an indigenous kid in WA you are different to an indigenous kid in Victoria both living in the city.

I don't really like that they're singling out Indigenous kids any which way. It would make more sense to be funnelling resources into non-football backgrounds and low SES backgrounds where they can't afford to drive their kid all over the state for rep games or sending them to elite private schools with cashed up football factories on campus. That would mean investing in most of the regional and remote communities anyway, improves access and equity, but wouldn't result in kids who grew up in the Calder Cannons program landing at Essendon because they're Indigenous or have a parent born overseas in some particular countries.

I have a vested interest in it so I will reserve my entire opinion on it, but I agree in principle with you that it could be better.

My own personal belief is that a club should be able to offer a full academic scholarship to a promising player, pay for all of that, then have access to the player for free if they want them - but they can't cut a player from that program once they are in it. The young man gets high quality school and board covered by AFL football. Perhaps even extending to siblings eligibility too.

Great this is the case. Is it now that indigenous kids in metro Vic can't be taken this year as NGA prospects?

Appreciate the background, thanks.

I agree. Clubs should all pay the same, and all that gets funnelled into one scheme which promotes the game in those areas covered by NGAs, and these players are then open to the draft.

The fact that Crows had access to James Borlase as a NGA because he was born in Egypt shows the system is not working.

His dad was captain and played 300 games for Port, and his mum played 70 odd games of netball for Australia. He was always playing football.

I believe that Victorian Metro Indigenous players fall under the standard rule of not being able to match within the first 20 picks.

So if that rule wasn't in place then WA Metro Indigenous players wouldn't be able to be matched until pick #41 and Victorian Metro Indigenous players can be matched from pick #1.

If you know Sonny + Marnie can you encourage them to try for a couple of boys as well as
those lovely girls.

So in Vic, the metro kid can be selected at 20-40 but not in SA/WA?

I'd kind of forgotten about that rule. 🤔 Do you have a link for more info?

I think the clubs do need to be directly involved as the club brands are part of the appeal and getting to stay in the same state is also helpful with the right of first refusal to bring them across from other sports. The AFL can fund it through the clubs if they want equal investment or something like that.

I don't know if that's a good thing or not really.

On the one hand you have Fremantle families having their kids attached to Victorian clubs due to the fathers playing in the VFL in the 80s, so giving Fremantle back some sort of rights to the kids is probably helpful for them.

But then you have the example you've just given there, and it's not even an interstate issue, its two clubs in the same state having rights to a player. Although, the kid does have to agree to be nominated and fill out forms for NGA eligibility. So it's interesting that he signed up for both – he doesn't have to agree to that.

Does anyone know if there's a mother/son rule? I know there is a father/daughter rule for the AFLW, dad plays 1 game for the club and the daughter can go there under that rule. But it would be interesting if AFLW players who played one game could have their sons attached to the AFL team, especially as some of the women who have signed up for it are older cross-code players and may potentially have kids in their teens already.

The way Mundy is going, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up playing AFL with his boys.

Find the best u14 prospect in the country and sign his mum to a list?
