Take a step back for a second.

Most draft pundits have it pretty even from 5-30. Yes, we'd get a player we rated at 11 but we'd miss out on an extra pick in the same range.

Can't remember which year, but we traded 15 + 52 for 20 + 25 to land CCJ and Balta.

If we have list space then I think it makes sense to maximise our possibilities in the range where we already have picks.

They have 2 NGA players who they need points for this year also.

Mitchito Owens is rated pretty highly and is a slight chance to go top 20 (which would mean they cannot match). So once the bid comes in early 20's, they'll need points to match and currently on 62, 66, 67 - which would come back once the earlier picks are absorbed.

Marcus Windhager is the other but could go anywhere from 20-50.

If this is legit about St Kilda willing to trade pick 9 for Academy picks we could trade 28 38 & 40 & this would give them a minimum of around 100 pts better off, if the picks are moved about due to earlier bidding it could move out to around 200 additional points for the Saints. Would also help with our decisions about our list with less picks.

I think Rachele could be worth trading up for with his kick, footy smarts and leadership

I can see Hobbs dropping to our pick comfortably. The teams that pick above us all have similar types on their lists. Adelaide, Freo and Hawthorn all have the slower, inside possession whores so I can't see them going for Hobbs. Ward will be gone, probably to Hawthorn, as he has a couple of extra strings to his bow but Adelaide have Crouch, Sloane and Schoenberg, Hawthorn have Mitchell, O'Meara and Worpel and Freo have Brayshaw, Mundy and have just lost the outside run of Cerra.

I'm happy with our picks at the moment:
Pick 7 - Hobbs/Gibcus/Rachele
Pick 15 - Van Rooyen (if we are interested) otherwise Sinn/Sonsie/Roberts, possibly Wanganeen-Milera
Only reason you'd offer 15 + whatever for Saints 9 is if we aren't interested in Van Rooyen and we vastly prefer Johnson or Goater over Sinn/Sonsie/Roberts.

Pick 26/28 - Nevitt/Butler/Bazzo/Williams territory - or trade to shit clubs for future seconds or upgrade of our future seconds to their firsts.

Pick 38/40 - Again, either trade for overs or else "We were pleasantly surprised to find XXXX available this late in the draft. We rated them a top 10 talent and still can't believe they lasted this far."

XXXX may or may not be a player any of us have even heard of.

we don't have to pick him you know. If the recruiters think another player is better they'll pick them!
