Woah that’s 4 Guinness too manyT'was the night before the Draft and YeOldSanta is a little maudlin, maybe having a Guiness (the old fella liked the froth from the end of the glass he did)...so I'm throwing caution to the wind and getting agresssive at the draft table:
If I'm Richmond I'm on the phone to the plonkers over at North - we agree to trade tomorrow Pick 7, 15 and 26 as well as our next year's first round pick (we already have North's second rounder which will be like a late 1st anyway as well as our own second so we can trade back into the first round ok) AND offer them Biggy Nguon (whatever/however) for the No1 pick, Jason Horne Francis. Kid was born to wear the yellow and black. We get a third rounder back. It's North after all.
Armed with the No1 pick (17 other clubs now literally crapping their dacks) we bid on Daicos, it's matched then we bid on Darcy, it's matched. We then take JHF and he plays R1 and makes Baily Smith look like a lockdown defender. Wins Rising Star and finishes T5 Jack Dyer medal. The new Dusty/Cotch/Shedda hybrid has arrived.
With our other two picks 27&28 we select Leek Aleer to replace/upgrade Biggy and Angus Sheldrick to give us that in and under little bull to become apprentice to Meatball and give us some nip and zip around the clearances.
JHF
Aleer
Sheldrick
That late pick gets used on a kid we like now or rolled over to the pre/mid season next year. sh*t we will probably jag another Lambert, Short, Pickett or Stack anyway.
Lock it in.
Id be gobsmacked for the opposite reasons.I’d be gobsmacked if GCS don’t select Gibcus at 3. They have a glaring need for a KPD. Budarick is coming off an ACL, and Homsch retired
I am super NOT keen on Amiss.
First of all, how often do tall forwards come on, really? Unless there is one impossible to pass up, you're just as likely to find a good one in the second or third round than you are in the first round. Outside of Jack Riewoldt we haven't drafted a good tall forward basically in my life. Richo was father/son. I know those two are at the very high end but we have had basically no one else in my life. Is this bad drafting or are good tall forwards just super hard to find? Is it thus worth wasting a great draft hand on one?
Amiss would be a risk for go-home factor, a risk because he may just not make it at AFL level, and a waste because he does not improve us in the now, he'll only play in a couple of years.
We are in the good (or awkward?) position where we have a team capable of a flag but also close to needing a rebuild. So what is this team's most obvious weakness, one clearly not having been addressable by its own depth players (clearly shown by our sh*t 2021), and one that if we address we can possibly be the best team again in 2022? THE MIDFIELD. Look at every game we lost, we got farking wrecked in the midfield, losing disposal counts and contested possessions by heaps. We weren't pressuring anymore so teams just wrecked us at times, stand rule aside. We had injuries but still, the midfield was horrible. Amiss will not solve this any more than our depth will.
Draft and list strategy should be midfielders and key defenders (these seem to come on way more often than key forwards) and, if you don't get lucky to draft a tall forward (say, in the second round) that becomes capable of finals-level footy after 2-4 years in the system, you poach someone.
- Us with Lynch
- Melbourne with Brown
- Even Essendon (I seethe at typing that word) with the more-than-serviceable and cheap-as-chips Peter Wright
Once you have an established engine room and defence, poach someone established (Brown) or even fringe (Wright) that you know can play, it doesn't even need to be a big money Tom Lynch type. If you're lucky you might still have drafted someone fairly decent (eg. Tom McDonald) along the way. But you won't have built that gun engine room by wasting top picks on guys like Shache, McCartin, Watts, Vickery, Gumbleton, McBean, Brander, Fogarty, Coleman-Jones...PLAYERCARDSTART25Tom Mcdonald

Anyway I digress sorry, I'm just saying that for both now and the future it's the midfield we need to buff. Tall forwards are a much bigger risk in the early picks. Amiss should be given a miss.

What's the knock on Gibcus his kicking ?.
He also adds on that there are a couple of others in that group as well, so it's certainly not locked to only those 4Matt Clarke said we will likely end up with one of Gibcus, Hobbs, Ward or Amiss with out first pick.
Need tall forwards even more there really is only JR at 33 and Lynch at 29 at least we have Balta in defence and Miller and Nyuon as projects. We need tall backs so badly, we have one under 30 Balta and he could play anywhere and still be a star. We have a couple of ruffies in Miller and Biggy.
Mids we have Stack (played a mid all his junior career), Bolton, RCD, Ross, Dow, Cumberland and Martyn. Sure we can do with another, but we have 4 more picks after pick 9 (Gibcus), surely on or two of them will join the group.
Would be so pissed off if we gave up the best young key back in the land for a mid who might be marginally better than another we pick up 6 spots later.
Shocked when we picked up CCJones in front of Balta, thank god that worked out but Balta was always going to be a player.

I’m 34 and we’ve drafted 2 really good forwards in my life. Two! Hogg (did we draft him, I don’t even know, he left when I was young) and Riewoldt. You could argue we paid less attention to it whilst Richo (father son) was so awesome, yet we still sucked anyway didn’t we, so it’s not like we did well drafting in other areas.Michael Roach, Brian Taylor , Neil Balme, Rex Hunt, Royce Hart, just a few forwards we got right??

Anyway let’s be a tad more recent. Since drafting Riewoldt (now a 300+ gamer) we’ve drafted a grand total of zero good tall forwards. Zero! Not for a lack of trying either. To me this says that we either suck at drafting them OR they’re really hard to produce to the level you really want or need to win finals.
So I say poach them rather than drafting them, you get a better strike rate with midfielders and defenders.
Yep suspect he meant Erasmus and Johnson in particular and likely also Sinn and Wanganeen.
Erasmus is a mid who can play fwd very well thank you. He has also been prolific when it comes to getting the pill and probably has more upside than most with a very late birth date. For me his size and scope for improvement is tantalising.I thought the general wisdom was you don't pick key defenders with early picks, and that it was better to get key forward. The argument was a failed forward can always be turned into a defender because you're led to the ball.
So I'm kind of wary about drafting this Erasmus too early.
I just want a kid who got stacks of possession in the juniors, provided he's not a man child.
I haven't watched any of these kids and won't bother until after we draft them. So take my view with liberal gains of salt.
So we’ve drafted one good forward in my time… that’s a very very poor strike rate, like astronomically bad.Hogg came through our u19s via our Waverley area zone so wasn't drafted.
They are actually very different players apart from their sizeHow is he compared to RCD?
They seem like similar types, just that Johnson has a little more runs on the board compared to RCD at the same point?
Dusty only had 8 in his vfl debut.Soligo had 16 touches in his VFL game with us. Decent first up
So we’ve drafted one good forward in my time… that’s a very very poor strike rate, like astronomically bad.
I know Jack is the upper echelon and they’re pretty rare, but we’ve basically drafted no one a tier down from him, we’ve only had forwards perhaps two to three tiers down. Not good.
We drafted Ottens and even though he was a dirty backstabber he was still a decent key forwardSo we’ve drafted one good forward in my time… that’s a very very poor strike rate, like astronomically bad.

Not good? Three premierships??? Seems the strategy worked perfectly!!So we’ve drafted one good forward in my time… that’s a very very poor strike rate, like astronomically bad.

I hope they do!Why worry if Freo get Aymiss at 6?
