hope we take best available midFrom KM on KPDs this year:
I'd ignore key defenders in this draft and look at those available from opposition lists and state leagues as that's where the value is, as per in my YouTube video yesterday.
Schlensog and Skinner from outside the AFL are my two picks. They're both balling.
The indicator that makes it so clear that it's not a draft for key defenders is when Josh Gibcus gets spoken about as a top-10 pick. He's not someone I'd be prepared to take inside the top-20, with Schlensog in my view much better certainly now, but also a higher probability choice over the long term for mine.
I part from popular opinion in that I don't necessarily see any key defenders as having to be elite stoppers. If they're an okay stopper, that's more than adequate to me. I'd even consider in Collingwood's situation playing Moore against the opposition's best key forward, and having them stress about Moore intercepting and rebounding in a similar way to how opponents worry about McGovern as an intercepter.
To get a feel for Schlensog and Skinner. Skinner might be a good one to pair with Moore to allow him to play higher because he's so good 1v1, he seems that ideal deeper defender v Schlensog who you even could play forward/ruck, but he's more someone you want higher and given the freedom to read the ball off the opposition's boot, which he does to a level just about as good as I've seen.

SavageGeneral rule of thumb is what KM states generally the opposite is true.

If a bid comes for Darcy at pick 3 then the Dogs will have to cough up 1800pts to match, with their current picks (14 + 69) they'll only have 1210pts so would go into next year with a 600pt deficit on their rnd 1 pick. They'll try and trade out a couple of players like Lipinski & Wallis possibly for future picks as they'll likely lose what they get if they trade in this years picks for them.Draft time is one of my favourite off-season events. I always watch this closely.
Now this is just my humble opinion but with bulldogs looking to trade their first round pick (currently pick 14) to gain enough points for when a team bids for Darcy, assuming they lose to Essendon it will end up being pick pick 11-12 I believe. I think we should trade our Geelong's pick (currently pick 16) and our late or future late pick to go higher in the draft and hopefully snag a top 10 player who may slip out.
So take the best available or best available mid with our first pick and the steal of the draft with bulldogs pick? Would love to hear everyone's opinion on what to do with our first round picks this year.

That’s the thing about the doggies situation, they are probably getting offers from every single club except CollingwoodFrom my uneducated opinion, if we want Gibcus, Hobbs or Callaghan we need to take up to at least GCS pick #5.
Hopefully we're the team who cashes in on Dogs needing points as that would give us 3 first rounders to trade up with.

Just gonna come down to who gives them the best offer
You just make it more appealing, just an example:Could we trade our picks in the 20's to the dogs for their 1st rounder? that way we could keep our pick and Geelongs plus nab the Dogs pick?
Whats the points difference between our picks in the 20's and the dogs 1st rounder?
Edit:
I just checked myself, picks 26 & 28 = 1,406 points. Pick 14 is 1,161 points. However if Dogs lose 1st week their pick is worth 1,329 points, so they probably wouldnt be interested if that happens.
not sure that's clearly better for us, even without the future 2nd rounderYou just make it more appealing, just an example:
Pick #26
Pick #28
Future 2nd Rd Selection
For
Pick #14
Future 3rd Rd Selection
Dogs get the clear win on points which is what they need - but the flexibility of have 3 first round picks this year gives us incredible flexibility.

It's not often you can get 3 picks inside 20 which gives you a fair bit of muscle on draft night to live trade.not sure that's clearly better for us, even without the future 2nd rounder

For a start, Schenslog is not a ruck. He's a KPB or is currently being played as a KPF. Full back is his best position. South Freo have been playing him at CHF/FF lately and he's kicked a few goals but was quite poor on the weekend against West Perth. Up until that game he's been having a strong season at FB.why do we need schlensog when we have soldo, ryan, namk and mate collina?
so why did the punters rate him at that? Better than Miller? For a start, Schenslog is not a ruck. He's a KPB or is currently being played as a KPF. Full back is his best position. Gibcus would normally be a 12-18 KPP pick but there just aren't any good quality key backs in this draft so he's talked about much higher and even Top 10. Van Rooyen should go 20-25 and he's a key forward who can play back. He'd be better with our third pick.Exactly, if our recruiting team rank Gibcus as the best player at our pick then terrific bit if they don't then I hope they take the player they rate as the best available. If we have to wait until next year for a quality key position player then so be it.
My opinion is that you're about the tenth person to mention this in the thread. Good idea, perhaps just not a new idea.Draft time is one of my favourite off-season events. I always watch this closely.

First pick best player at about 10 Josh Rachele. Second pick inside mid Mathew Roberts if he slides that far. Third pick best tall out of Williams, Amiss (he will go earlier than our pick sadly) or Van Rooyen.
I dont know of he's better than Miller or not, but I know he's not a ruckman. Free is South's ruckman. Schlensog may take the occasional throw in deep if the ruckman doesn't get there but he plays predominantly FB or the last three or four games he's been playing key forward. Not sure why anyone would have him listed as a ruck except that he's 199cm.so why did the punters rate him at that? Better than Miller?
