Hobbs looks a bit meat and potatoes to me for pick 7. Smallish inside mid with not a lot of pace. A bit of X-factor at such a high pick would be nice.

Sort of agree. But if he is a high possession inside ball winner who makes the team work better then he's likely worth it. If Hobbs can be that long term dominant inside ball winner, with good defensive and outside ability you can build around him.

I'd rather your more transition mid. But pure quality at doing something important is good for pick 7.

We'll have pick 9. We're getting the 9th-best player, not the 7th-best.

Last time we had pick 9 we went the reliable Nick Vlastuin over the X-factor Troy Menzel.

How does he compare to say Ross already on our list?

My dream first two picks would be the Finn (Callaghan) and (Josh) Sinn combo. I see some Rance in Sinn and Callaghan is just a classy tall-mid left footer who oozes quality finish.

I reckon at pick 9 you go with a meat and potatoes player, a good honest workhorse mid. Obviously a pick inside the top 10 should net you what looks to be a pretty bloody decent meat and potatoes player, mind you. Going for flair at that pick is risky imo. Flairy players can really be a bust and probably more worth the risk later in the draft.

I’m on the Hobbs train… and the Ward train… and the Callahan train… and the Rachelle train… and the VR train… and the Erasmus train… and the..
How are the splinters?

Meat and potatoes is what we need right now imo plenty of X factor in Bolton and RCD but we need someone who can start winning the contested inside ball to get it into their hands

Plenty of later picks to take some more risks for X factor types

What's the plan with Ross rcd Martyn stack etc

Any players names rhyme with "Conca" ?

Exactly. I reckon a tall is more important with pick 7. The midfield has a line of players waiting their turn, our forward half has Jack, Lynch and ?
Our tall backs, Balta?
Talls are underwhelming this year while next year it’s a bonanza.
And there’s always free agency to get a ready to go kpp

Sometimes I feel like we expect every player we take with a top 20 pick should be near Dusty level good. Top 10 definitely! The fact is, there's good, great and average players taken pretty much from top to bottom in the draft.

I know many don't rate his opinion, but Knightmare said something the other week that jumped out at me. Something to the effect that in this year's draft pool there's probably 4 who could go on to be "best 2 or 3 on list" quality. Outside of that, the next rung are likely "in the best 10 on your list". Who would be the best example of that from our list? Vlastuin? Short? Baker?

I.e. if we can get a Taylor Adams with our first pick, take it and run!

But we won't have a pic 7 next year. We could have the best or second best key forward/back going this year. There are bugger all good key forwards in the league as it is, and to get a good one free agency costs you need to pay an arm and a leg, Cameron.

We need one now, get a year development into them and they will be ready(ish) for when Jack goes.

Pick 7 will get you a good midfielder. Those being touted at our pick, Hobbs and Ward, don't look special but solid pics. If someone like Callaghan falls indeed snap them up, but the choice of the best tall or back or an industrious midfielder, I'll go the tall right now, because it is far more what we need IMO.

He's actually a very good forward also so his overhead game is fine. In fact, its rare that a pure inside mid can be a threat forward.

Man I would take a Taylor Adams clone with pick 7.

He has virtually zero forward threat at AFL level. If he played 300 AFL games, he would be lucky to have 50 goals to his name. Isn't the type of player who is going to be rested forward, will be midfield resting on bench.

He can get the ball for starters

Ross is untidy with the footy, he also takes a long time to make a decision with the ball in his hands. He isn’t a very high instinct type of mid. Hobbs uses the ball very well by foot and by hands. Hobbs isn’t a meat and potato type at all. He’s going to be a very strong contested beast in his prime and will be a player that can impact in 2022. He is a tackling machine aswell, hunts players defensively which is something we lack at stoppages.
