That's generally how you mess up your drafting.

First pick is generally best talent available when you're dealing with Top 10 picks.

Then you start looking at needs.

Especially when JVR is not a lock to make it at the elite level,

There are reasons why some think he will get to the twenties and why players are selected a little bit later whether the perceptions are right or wrong

Just because he is a KPP does not mean he is necessarily good enough at the elite level in a high pressure final in terms of the matchups

Pick 15 for us is starting to get into the iffy players where there are a lot of good prospects but the players may have the odd gremlin in terms of risk factor(s) and that gets worse as we head to 30 and beyond

So could Matty White. We need inside extraction and footy iq as a mid priority. Let the late picks be the athletes.

Why can't we have both?

I think we have too many black and white players.

Too many smalls and too many talls.

Too many inside players and too many outside players.

We do not have enough versatility in our list. Not enough, Dusty's and Petraccas even without the class and with less quality. Not enough Brayshaws or even Harmes where they are inside and outside and not enough players that can play small and tall

Too many role players that get pigeon-holed when the list shifts around, players retire, and new players come in, because they do not have enough dimensions in their game

Theres a few interesting things in this.

I suppose any team is limited by the ceiling of the player in those areas, as well as development. If there is a clearance beast who is also has elite speed and endurance (or capacity) then by all means pick that player.

Id also add that the game is turning towards 22 running mids (and tall mids who happen to be able to ruck, and post up down back an fwd) so we stand to get caught out drafting slow role players.

But I suspect given our lack of clearance depth in 2021 that a clearance beast will be the focus for our first pick (along with ready made body and enough of a tank). Whether our lack of speed, run and especially kicking accuracy gets found out again, we shall see.

I think clearances as a stat can be misleading because it depends on the group including the ruck.

For example I think Bont and Macrae are overrated as clearance beasts. Don't get me wrong, they are terrific midfielders and can be quite damaging forward especially Bont like in the final, but in terms of clearances it depends on Libba and others feeding it out and the ruck.

The other thing is clearances are only one part of a players game and also and how good are the clearances. A lot get excited about post clearance for example

Edited my original post for balance. In summary first hands on the pill has been a huge problem which I think pick 7 will focus on but I dont disagree with you per se.

So do we have the ability to trade picks atm? And it ends like just before draft or something?

Yep, stated in this article "clubs are able to complete pick swaps until November 15 and then again during the NAB AFL Draft"

It's probably unlikely but if all Callaghan, Ward, Hobbs are gone by our pick and Mac Andrew is still on the board... Who's to say we won't go best available at take him?

Would definitely split opinions here.
I would think Erasmus would be ahead of Andrew on our radar if we that were the case.

I look at a guy like Cerra.

To me we may have dodged a bullet.

He will be a handy player but, for me he seems a bit inbetween, more outside than inside not a real match-up dynamo, and cost a bit in terms of salary and picks. We could have got him but I think in the draft we can get better at better value that helps our list get better in the future helping us win more premierships.

I was looking at Trading Day on Foxtel when King and Montagna where talking about windows for each club. They said (or King)some like Saints have no window, I think they said Freo in no-mans land.

I think team like Carlton may also be in no-mans land to and they are overrating the window opening for the Bulldogs as well as Port Adelaide. Can't remember what they said about Brisbane but I think they said it might not be as long as others

Richmond is another club who could package up some of its selections for another earlier pick, while St Kilda has also been on the lookout for more earlier picks using future selections to pay for its Next Generation Academy pair Marcus Windhager and Mitchito Owens.

After pick No.9, the Saints hold picks 62, 66 and 67 – worth a total of 272 points.

What’s the go with Sinn? Who does he play like

And its Sam Butler and upgrade on Butler v1.0?
He plays very much like Bailey Dale of the bulldogs, except he is also lighting fast.

I'd say we will go best available. Who our recruiters rate as the best available is the $64 question. Fair chance it could be different to the view of the "phantom draft consensus" (and us supporters, for that matter! [emoji51])

One of the reasons we have been so successful is that we focus on players strengths instead of trying to fix their weaknesses. If we can find players with big upsides that may have still have some 'iffy' traits or the odd gremlin, I think there is no better club in the competition that can make them vital gogs in a well oiled machine.

Gold Coast are keen on Gibcus, GWS will go for Andrew is my best guess right now pre trades. I think Gold Coast will be very interested in trading down from pick 2 to pick 7, I think Gibcus will still be available at 7. If we can trade with Gold Coast to get pick 3, I believe we will take Callghan, and crows will take Hobbs.
1.Horne-Francis- Kangaroos
2.Daicos- Collingwood
3.Darcy- Bulldogs
4.Gibcus- Gold Coast
5.Andrew- GWS
6.Callghan- Crows
7.Ward- Hawks
8.Erasmus- Freo
9.Hobbs- Tigers.
10.Johnson - West Coast
Not bad, but the Saints have a pick before West Coast, Freo and WC are both being linked to Josh Rachele.

Agree, we need to get players with more scope that can play small and tall and not restricted to certain roles based on factors outside the clubs development control

I wanna agree with this but I struggle to completely.
Can’t dispute our recent success but I’m sick of seeing Caddy wing (he’s a forward), Ross a slimmed down half back (he’s an inside mid), Rioli a flair lacking space guarder, Dusty sitting forward when we can’t win the ball, etc. Dimma does some weird shit sometimes.

Sinn was rated 5-10 in the draft before he got injured. He is a jet, would be a great get at pick 15.
Wins the ball and runs, could easily be an A grade half back or winger. We lacked outside speed last season, especially on the wing.
