GWS would be insane to add yet another high mid that would eventually place another established high drafted mid into a playing position that he's not much good at,no wonder they have so many million dollar duds with no flags from the greatest first rounders ever given to one team.
Historically someone falls out and slides. It would be good to be in a position to pick up that player whoever they are.
I don't think it's under rating other recruiters, it's just that some clubs have pressing needs that force them to overlook a player. Fremantle for example need talls and will therefore likely split their picks meaning someone like Amiss who could otherwise be there at 10-15 is taken earlier.
I doubt Johnson gets past West Coast if he's still there at 10, but you never know if someone else like a Rachelle etc slides.

unless we trade up a few spots I think we end up with one of either Hobbs, Ward or Gibcus
I’d be stoked with either.
Rance slid, any sliders of significance you care to mention historically??
We have 5 quality picks coming in, and rerookie Biggie & Cumberland, how many list spots will that leave us with?Hmm i would not mind us trading out a future pick in the 50's 60's for a similar one this year.
If the consensus is we are going for another flag then just Tarrant for Astbury won't get the job done. Our better players are all a year older and not all will maintain the standard.
A big mature ready to go bull of a mid like Greg Clark would go a long way to helping out the midfield same goes for Bailey Rogers.
The other area where depth is lousy is kpd and kpf a mature swingman like Skinner and Schlensog would give us genuine cover. Another one who has been spoken about is Charlie Dean.
The logic is and it seems to be a consensus there are few KPP'S in the draft so why not nab a mature one with a late pick rather than wait for the rookie draft or mid season draft when there is every likely hood they are already taken.
Will say it again Ross RCD Dow Martyn imo have been underwhelming thats not a put down its a comment on what they have produced to date.
Our best inside mid is injury prone and misses heaps of games every year someone like Clark is just plain old common sense in my view.
We go into next yr with premiership plans and only have two genuine Key Forwards 33YR old Riewoldt and 29YO Lynch ffs if we are hunting a flag we need some cover here and we won't get that cover from a just drafted junior.
The same can be said for key defenders as well if Balta goes down again or Tarrant then its down to one gamer Miller who has also been a bit underwhelming to date.
We are either in a premiership hunt or we aren't. if we are we need some mature players in a few key areas other wise we will suffer big time if injuries hit us in these areas it will be even harder than last year
If its a flag and its depth we want in areas that have very little depth then A big mature mid and a few mature swingmen would be ideal.
I know you're not asking me but...Balta, Bolton, Jack Darling from West Coast. From memory they were rated far higher in their drafts compared to where they ended up. If we landed just one Bolton or Balta in our three in a row this could be one hell of a draft. Anyhow with the lack of exposed form the sliders might be more numerous and better than usual. Just saying if the club really really really trusts it's recruiters, this might be the best draft to hold our hand of late picks in the twenties. That said, still wouldn't complain if we turned a couple of twenties into a mid to late teen.
The story I heard though was that it was because of restrictions, and the testing was done in a makeshift area with a tarpaulin or something which was low and causing interference. Having said that, the kid has some spring.Josh Gibcus apparently outjumped the measuring instrument in the vertical jump!![]()
Balta and Darling are KPP. I know Darling slid a little , do you know where Balta was anticipated to go in the phantom's?
Was Bolton rated higher in the phantom's? Still Bolton would have been seen as a small forward at the time surely? I don't think many would have foresaw the growth and impact in Bolton's game and ability in the midfield at draft time
I know he was rated but was Bolton anticipated to go earlier in the draft and slid or was he rated a little later with a boom tag but with risks so there was not so much of a actual slid in terms of phantom expectations?
It is interesting because not many mids have slid greatly of significance I have noticed. When Graham was drafted, despite being a Larke medalist, where was he in the phantom's
Sydney StackOk this is all from memory but at one stage Balta was talked about as potentially an early top ten pick. Bolton was supposedly something like the 10 to 12 mark. He got marked down because he was so slight and was considered by some a flight risk. Darling was also considered by some a potential top five. Again from memory the main concern about him was off-field stuff but no-one doubted his talent (I read a lot at the time as it was the infamous Conca draft). All were no-brainer selections in the 20s and genuine sliders, you just had to draft them there.
Anyhow as for midfielders I'm not so sure. What were the draft projections for Zach Merret, Jack Steele, Lachlan Neale or Andrew Swallow? I know James Worpel was a slider and already as a club best and fairest obviously a good pickup at 45. Caleb Daniels was a super slider because of his height. Not sure where I'm going with all of this though, except that I would be surprised especially in this draft if there aren't some very good sliders come our picks in the 20s, and one or two might even be midfielders. We'll see..
Probably means Hobbs is available at pick 9
JHF
Daicos
Darcy
Gibcus
Callaghan
Rachele
Ward
Erasmus
Yep can recall a timely smear campaign re darling just prior to draft ,,,love to know who started itOk this is all from memory but at one stage Balta was talked about as potentially an early top ten pick. I know he's a local boy, but I'd be surprised if Freo took Erasmus over Hobbs.
I's love us to take Josh Gibcus and Leek Alleer with our first two picks. This sets us up with outstanding intercept players for the next 12 years. Also, KPP take a little longer to develop and our defence will be different in two years when they can slot in. Throw in Bazzo with one of our picks in the late 20s and you have an entire backline set up for the future.
Macrae and Oliver were both bolters (in Oliver's case from basically nowhere), similar to a bloke like Sidebottom. Petracca was always in the number 1 conversation and Dusty was always in the top 5 calculations.historically lessor types slide and sometimes for good reason.
Who are the major sliders??
Bont didn't slide, Oliver did not slide, Macrae did not slide, Grundy slid, Lever slid, Dusty did not slide, Petracca did not slide
Why would we want Amiss if we want better targets??
Rance slid, any sliders of significance you care to mention historically??
Most seem to be KPP and the odd ruck wrongly rated but we have plenty of ruck and the KPP options are thin
With the ability to trade for picks including live less chance of sliding since some will come in and trade for the picks to get them
Not sure Rachelle slides either. How many small forwards can kick it 60 metres?
Rachele will go top 8 almost guaranteed. Top 15 will include Amiss too but probably not JVR. Mac Andrew will go early as well.Macrae and Oliver were both bolters (in Oliver's case from basically nowhere), similar to a bloke like Sidebottom. Re sliders, the one that sticks in my mind is Daniel Rich who probably started the year as the consensus number 1 and ended up down at 8. There's one each year, be they tall or small that push the order out and make a club make a difficult decision.
Just from a quick glance at recent history: 2015 - Ryan Burton, 2016 - Will Hayward/Jack Graham, 2017 - Darcy Fogarty/Ed Richards/Jack Higgins (I don't personally rate Higgins but some do), 2018 - Can't see anyone of note, 2019 - Deven Robertson.
In the Rance year we had to take an additional few minutes to toss up between Selwood and him..... You've pointed out a few sliders who are all good players and I think that given the heavy depth of midfielders it's indicative that one will slide just purely because sides will start to reach for the few talented talls. I'm just using Rachelle as an example, I also highly doubt he drops further than the 4-8 mark.
I’m sure there’s plenty ahead of Banks too, but I was using him as an example and, yes, we have five top 30 picks, but who said we’re using them all.I can understand if we had a pick in the 50's we could take a punt but 5 picks in the top 30, there's many ahead of Banks.

Have you heard somewhere that we aren’t interested in combining some picks to move up the draft? It depends how comfortable you are with what’s available given the limited exposure many of these kids have had.
We may very well be zeroing in a couple of rock-solid targets - who knows. If that’s the case, then we may well have some later picks available.
Gibcus a chance at pick 9. Alleer probably goes later than our last pick. Lots of gaps in his game atm.I's love us to take Josh Gibcus and Leek Alleer with our first two picks.
