I take someone now. By midyear we will have Hipwood back and the likelihood of someone being needed to play will be lessened.

We are very thin at the moment at both ends and we have a spot we may as well use to cover for an emergency which is most likely to occur in the first half of the year. We are in the premiership window and we should be focused on winning now. Saving a spot to pick up a marginal prospect in the middle of the year I think would be a mistake. Bring a mature body in now who can provide the cover we need.

I think we can cover an injury at either end of the ground as it is, with Hipwood coming back I don’t believe key forwards are an issue. Going from my projected 22 we’ll have both Payne and Lester in the reserves to cover the tall backs which isn’t ideal but would get us to the mid-season mark. If we have an injury crisis to our key positions by all means take a depth tall mid-season but I don’t think leaving that spot open for the first half of the season will cost us a premiership.

If we can recruit a ready to go KPP now, then I would be happy to pull the trigger. But I don't see much point in getting an 18yo in if we're looking for instant depth.

If we can't get someone with enough maturity to play a decent role now, then I'm keen to see us hold out to the mid season draft. A lot changes in that first six months and, this year in particular, I think we'll see a lot of overaged players emerge, due to the lack of footy in Victoria last year. Getting the early jump on a good 19yo sounds like a good investment to me.

Matthew Hammelmann?

I would be happy to give Ballenden or someone compatible a second chance......we seem vulnerable in that area depth wise. Someone who can play back or forward. It could be our achillies heal come that last day in Sept. Can't rely on one Payne as demonstrated last season. I like Payne but talking decent depth.

As far as depth goes, l woud say he is pretty decent especially for a KPD spot.

Just my thoughts- Freeman didn’t impress enough at Gold Coast but we should take him???? Those saying save the spot for mid season start-we will have an injury in the first half of the season that we will be able to replace, it’s sad but true. Also we literally just got rid of Ballenden because he wasn’t up to it, not sure what’s changed in a couple of months.

Who’s available though?

Hammelmann doesn’t appear to want it.

Ballenden has skills, but maybe not the grunt.

Or look at Schlensog from Vic/WA. Has the physical tools, but not the skills of Ballenden.

Otherwise, have Conole and co. watching the NAB League overagers, and try and sign one without a trial.

Not saying he's the best option but I could definitely see the club just promoting Buzza to the main list if we were to go down that route but again I'd just wait till mid-season to do that if necessary.

If we’re allowed to play top ups in extreme cases, we don’t really need to sign someone to a rookie contract during the SSP or mid season draft, unless we see someone as a long term prospect.

Just play our top ups, and bank the salary, to be used in future seasons if we’re trading in a player.

Jarryd Lyons lol

Its a nice position to be in having the spare spot now, even better we don't have a super urgent need to fill it (touch wood on injuries). There are a lot of footballers around that have not had a real crack over the last 2 years of a full season of consistent footy. There are probably a few diamonds in the rough that will start to shine with some regular footy. I'm for looking at a KPP, development player, a little how we took Lane know he has potential but is a few years away. We are a destination club (what ever that means) but through Covid QLD is also a destination community given the migration now happening with the borders open. We could fill the position now if we thought another club might get the one we have an eye on or I think we can wait to see half a season of footy and back ourselves to win a player over. I'd rather take the punt on a kid while we can, than try to recycle a player know the limit on.

I wonder if it is correct to assume that the longer we go without naming a supplementary player, the less likely we're looking for someone who is "ready to go". I'd think that if the club wanted immediate depth, they would be signing someone quickly so that they can do a decent preseason of some description and be available early on.

Of course, the risk is signing someone early is if you sign one type of player and then cop an injury to another type of player - eg the Suns signing Tsitas and then King going down.

Yeah that's some shitty luck/timing by the Sun's.

Hopefully Rory Thompson is back from injury (if so) they could push Lukosius forward and also have Chol and Sam Day so they might be alright. Also have Levi Casboult waiting in the wings which I guess is the exact reason why they brought him in, as well as being cover for Witts.

Cal Twomey on SEN this morning saying Ashcroft is the mist likely #1 at this early time of the year

I think he’s probably the safest bet, there’s a couple other guys that if they hit their potential probably edge him for number 1. Can’t see him dropping out of the top 3 though
