Analysis 2021 draft thread

I wonder if we would consider sliding back from pick 14, if the likes of Goater, Sinn and NWM are all drafted by that stage. Slide back and still have the likes of Chesser, Wilmot, Brown, Owens and Howes to choose from.

Cost of sliding back is a future second round pick.

I’m still a bit perplexed about our lack of pick accumulation for next year. I suppose I should be happy that we still have all our picks and there still is time for moves to occur.

Player wise I’ve got no clue this year. Daly said something earlier this year about KPP’s so we all thought KPP. As you said they’re not really jumping off the page this year the current crop of KPP’s. Last week he said something about wing and hbf types so it’s just natural to jump and try to make connections. It must be like being a conspiracy theorist. Chesser and Brown around that mark as hbfs so just some more names to be make a connection to. I do like the sound of Brown though. Owens would be a reach but those in clubland would now more than the BF draft specialists. Then again Starcevich was one that was taken probably earlier than most thought and look how he turned out! All in all if we were to go the avenue of drafting those types of players and were able to hit those picks it would help overall to our list I believe. Can’t believe we’ve got to wait till the end of November!

lol no. Goater is way faster and more agile. His explosiveness will come in 3 to 4 years in an AFL strength program.

Berry is more brute strength, but hasn’t got to the Cripps level of power.
Lol- really- ? You can disagree without laughing off other people’s opinions. I can read other people’s thoughts on the draft and pretend I know more than everyone else too if you like.

I reckon Jarrod relies largely on his strength, whereas it looks like Goater relies largely on his agility.
Agreed, Goater is explosive whereas Berry is powerful.
If fairness he is not just strength and power- he won all time trials until Sharp turned up last year. Won the time trial and repeat sprints at the combine which relies on more than just strength.

Goater looks to have good quickness whereas I do not think that is a big part of Berry's game. Berry is an excellent runner and covers a lot of ground but he does not really have great speed over the first 5 to 10m.

While we are talking about running it is going to be interesting to hear what Sharp has been working on. I think he struggled a bit with the repeat sprint nature of the AFL game and I am hoping that is where he has spent his time. He is another who is not super quick off the mark but he has a top end speed which is higher than virtually any other in the game. Once he is up to speed he is not getting caught. It would be good for him to be working on that initial burst and getting up to speed quicker. He has an elite engine but a bit of fine tuning is needed to perform at its best in the AFL environment.

The discussion was about moving through and breaking away from congestion.

Running power in terms of distance running or repeat sprints is not the same as exploding away from a near stand still.

It’s like looking at Neale versus Rayner when they win the ball and break opponents attempted tackles.

Neale uses his core strength then evasion agility to escape congestion, while Rayner uses brute strength in a powerful burst to push straight through opponents.

Berry doesn’t have the burst of Rayner, rather he uses his size and power to break out at a slower speed.

Sure Berry is slower but is the better kick not sure on Goater as a contested midfielder either but he’s pace and handball skill are up there with the best of them

Athletically Goater feels closer to a taller Tom Berry than Jarrod. Also just on his kicking he looked a little rushed in some of those clips but his actual kicking action looks pretty good.

I agree. His poise wasn't always great but athletically looks great with decent skills and vision

Nice to see everyone talking themselves into who we should draft in anticipation of getting all pissy about it when it doesn't eventuate. Never change BigFooty.
Like the new Suicide Squad movie.
Don’t get to attached to anyone.

Lions Academy product Toby Triffett did his best to impress in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft Combine, recording personal bests across the board in Saturday’s testing.

Triffett was one of 11 Queensland players participating in the major testing event, with fellow Lions’ Academy members, Jack Briskey, Tahj Abberley, and Charlie Bowes also taking part.

19-year-old Triffett topped the Queensland cohort in both the agility and 2km tests, while Briskey led the Queenslanders in the vertical jump and the running vertical jump.

Tahj Abberly also finished second in the agility test and equalled his PB in the vertical jump.

Their strong performances come off the back of a dedicated training block with Lions Academy Strength and Conditioning Coach Joe Penfold leading up to the Combine.

Unfortunately, Lions Academy product Saxon Crozier missed the State Combine due to illness.

This is the second year in a row that the 2021 NAB AFL Draft Combine has been held as a State-based event due to the impacts of COVID-19.

The 2021 NAB AFL Draft Combine assesses the strength and skills of each player through several tests including 20-metre sprint, agility tests and vertical jump ahead of the 2021 NAB AFL Draft.

The 2021 NAB AFL Draft is scheduled to be held on Wednesday November 24.

Goater looks like a great athlete and would add needed variety to our midfield in that respect - a different type of mid athletically. I am not as sure on his vision and his decision making (basing this solely off that limited footage). His handballs seemed to put the receiver under a lot of pressure and his kicking was not as clean as I had anticipated.

I think this draft will be a lot of hits and misses right through to the 40s with such a disrupted couple of years so fingers crossed whoever we get comes on well for us and provides another string to our bow to disrupt opposition strategy in some way.

I don't follow the underage leagues. I have no idea who is who, or who is likely to go in what position. And I'm already raging!!!

Goater, Wilmot and Banks if he slides please, JVR to go before our 2nd first rounder IMO.

IMO we will be very open to trading our 2022 1st if someone we really like slides to 14(16) +. I don't think a club would take our 2022 1st for their pre 14(16) as most would view us as a probable top 4 finisher again.

My only issue with drafting 3 non-KP players is that it would mean delisting Ballenden leaving us very shallow for key position depth. Really like all 3 players you've named though.

I'm really hoping Geelong's Clark trade falls off, leaving Freo with both 19 and 22. Not sure how many spots Freo have to fill but they could take our 14 for 19+22. Works out to be a pick 30 equivalent trade in our favor, but they get the benefit of having 3 first round picks 6/8/14. Leaves us with 18/19/22.

We won't be taking more than 3 this year so if we could somehow land 27 from pies, we can palm it off to Freo as well if needed.
