Just a small suggestion. Don't have favourites or more importantly those you don't want drafted to the Lions. Watch tonight with excitement, welcome them with open arms and just hope like hell they become players for us ;)

Amen.

Unfortunately true I really desperately wanted Oliver the year we drafted Schac at pick 2

I'll back the recruiters on whatever decisions they make, but I will say this. Modern history is littered with players who get shifted to the half back who weren't recruited for that role and flourish. It appears a relatively easy position to play and fill. Not sure spending high end picks on half backs is wise...

A few examples being Rich, Jayden Short, Nick Hind, Aaron Hall, Jack Ziebell, Starcevich, Sicily, Bailey Dale, Caleb Daniel etc.
I believe the key is they are good ball users and decision makers.

I’m not so caught up in X type players shouldn’t be drafted in the first round of the draft, or early.

Not every team has elite half backs or small forwards, half forwards etc.

If we have a clear current or future need, that’s what I would be looking to address. Doesn’t have to be like for like. Robinson, Zorko and Rich are the obvious players we’ll need to replace in the not to distant future.

Still think we will package a future first a one of the first rounders we have this year to move up + a little bit coming back out way.
Essendon’s pick in play if Sinn is still on board, and Goater looks like sliding.

I’d much rather trade our future first plus 14 for Sinn and a future second round pick, than trade 14 and 18 for Sinn and a future second round pick.

yeah, i'd rather 2 first round picks this year. dont care too much about next year with likely early ashcroft bid.

I
Agree that we are not desperate. But If we are determined to get Starcevich into the midfield then we look a bit slimmer. I am bullish on our potential depth but that is what most of it is, potential depth...

Starc - gun but might be heading to the midfield
Rich 31yo
Coleman - very promising but only played a few games there
Madden - promising, handful of games
Answerth - reasonably promising, only a few games, very injury prone
Ah Chee - like him but has played all over the ground
Prior - handful of games, looks decent, unsure of best position
Carter Michael - who knows
Uosis - who knows

Add to this we just lost two small / mid backs in Birchall and Brock Smith and it makes sense that we need some move cover there.
I don't see Starcevich moving into the midfield at all. He wasn't going to make it there earlier in his career so the move to defence was needed and he has certainly made that work. That's his spot, that's his future, and as I've said before he will become a general back there along with Andrews when Rich retires. The reason I don't think he is suited to the midfield is because I don't think he has the vision in close, in a pack, to effectively move the ball out or position himself to support. Whereas in defence he can see the game better, see the ball movement clearer and has the time to make decisions and positional adjustments much better.

He will be a gun down back for us for a long time, he made the AA U22 there after just a cpl of seasons and will only get better. To me it's a bit of robbing Peter to pay Paul, or weakening a strength to strengthen a weakness, if indeed the midfield needs strengthening at all in the future. I don't think it will. Neale n Lyons for atleast another cpl of years. Clug, Berry, Bailey, Devrob, longer term. Ashcroft and other draftees that will come in the future. And who knows who will be traded in over that time as well. I'd much rather his long term solid consistency with Andrews, Payne etc making our back 6 a force to be reckoned with for a long time.

Clubs that could trade up into this part of the draft include Brisbane (Picks 16 and 20) and Melbourne (Pick 19), who are considering getting ahead of Essendon (Pick 13) and Port Adelaide (Pick 14) in the order. That’s because all four clubs have been linked to Northern Knights defender Darcy Wilmot, who now looms as hot property in the middle of the draft and could be central to how the rest of the round pans out.

It's almost as if Wilmot has a huge amount of potential and would be a great pickup for us

Could also be trying to get other clubs to trade up and take him leaving someone to fall to us. I still believe if we trade above Port and Essendon we're taking Sinn or Goater not Wilmot.

My current list of realistic (a couple on the unlikely end) selections are, in order:
Erasmus
Sinn
Johnson
Goater
Sonsie
Butler
Wilmot
Draper
Chesser

Im off JVR or R Bazzo with either of our first. Adding W Buzza for the VFL negates the need to reach for needs I think.

And at 41

Alleer
Dean
Hayes (mature age)

However if we take a tall with one of our first I like Banks at 41. I think he is underated and should be somewhere in the 20-30 range. If he is gone I would be keen on Voss.

Goater doesn’t seem to have been linked to us at all really so he is probably unlikely.

Honestly I'm not believing any of the links at this stage, if anything being so heavily linked to one player makes me think it's a cover, wouldn't be surprised if the player we pick is someone nobody has mentioned for us.

Absolutely. Clubs are not revealing their hands to the media of all people.

Chris Fagan on an episode of The Roar Deal recently said that Starcevich will be given a go in the midfield to see what he can offer, said he has the stamina and the skills for the position.

Or he’s getting massive overrated because he’s the youngest player in the draft there are plenty of pre year draft players who have been rated quite highly only to seriously dropoff in form
I don't think he's overrated, he's a really nice player that a lot of teams would like the low risk option, I just think we're in a position with our list to try and target some real game changers that could be a little more high risk high reward.
