Analysis 2021 draft thread

Personally I have Bazzo higher than JVR.

Yes JVR can play forward, but I believe he will struggle up forward at AFL level.

I think Bazzo projects as a taller more genuine KPP version of Ridley from Essendon. He’s also long limbed, so can play taller than his height. He’s also a decent kick and has good pace for a taller player.

I don’t know if he’s ever been tried forward.

I understand Bazzo has been tried forward without much success. I agree that JVR is very likely to be a defender at AFL level but he is one who I think might be able to be swung forward at times to mix things up. A plan B perhaps ;)

I think JVR has a bit more flair and is the more likely to lead an attack from defence and overlap with his running. Bazzo more the deep back who will control things from deep. Bazzo taking the kick ins for WA says a bit about the quality of his kicking. So going back to the glory days JVR is the Leppa whilst Bazzo is the Michael. I actually like both quite a lot.

Bazzo or JVR. Happy with either. Both elite level names ;)

The top two open draft kids are Jason Horne-Francis and Callaghan.

I doubt that North or GWS trade out of those picks.

After that it really opens up. There’s no consensus next best kid.

Players that would suit us would be Erasmus, Sinn, Goater or Wanganeen-Milera. One of them could be available at our first pick, or all 4 could go top 10.

I wouldn’t trade up for the KPP’s discussed as top 10, Gibcus (KPD) or Mac Andrew (Ruck Forward) or Amiss.

The rest of the mids are shorter 180cm - 183cm, who I’m not so keen on, purely because we have Ashcroft and Fletcher coming in next year.

What's Fletcher like? Is he a 100% draftable commodity?

Not to dissimilar to some of this year’s prospects being spoken about as early second round draft picks.

He’s ~180cm. Good pace, good kick, good decision making. Can play wing, either flank, and rotate inside.

If he was taller, and shown more inside, would probably be rated higher.

Is he finished growing? Still 18 months from when his first game would be

I don’t know. Every kid is different. His dad wasn’t that tall.

Hopefully we get some preseason measurements next year.
True but many father/sons are bigger than their dad these days. Tony Liberatore was 163cm. Tom is 184.

On the trade thread jackees replied to someone regarding moving up the draft order using pick 9 as an example
I sort of liked this idea. My trade post listed all our picks for years 2015 to 2020. I would prefer lower than pick 9 actually
Example used was our current picks (14 & 18) for 9 & 28. After f/s etc it might look like (19/20 & 23/25) for 13 & 35 (guess)

My opinion is you are more likely to get an AA type player pick 18 and under
So wondered how many games did clubs get out of these draft picks over the last decade

Below is the top 30 draft picks from year 2010. The Lions player picks are bolded with total games played in brackets (??).
Average games played for each pick is listed over far right but just below is a separate breakup of these averages
Pick 3 takes the prize with picks 10 & 20 both horrible
So total of all Pick 1's since 2010 has played an average of 81 games. I got the draft position and games played from draftguru

I know we likely have Ashcroft and Fletcher next year, but I like Joshua Browne of East Fremantle as an inside mid a little later in the draft. Won the WAFL colts medal tonight and missed a number of games with a single injury.

#18 Jaspa Fletcher (Sherwood/Lions Academy)
24/02/2004 | 179cm | 72kg

Whilst not accumulating massive amounts of the footy, Fletcher was classy and composed with the ball when he won it, not needing too much time to assess his options and then make a good decision with it – even in traffic. Fletcher showed a good amount of two-way running as well, often seen in the backline as a switch option or a handball receiver out of the contest and then running hard forward to be an option in transition. Fletcher kicked a goal where he ran onto a spilled ball out the front of a contest that had formed, tucking it under his arm and running his distance, before finishing from about 45 out.

#26 Toby Triffett (Morningside/Lions Academy)
24/02/2002 | 188cm | 85kg

Not necessarily flashy in his play but one that catches the eye through his sheer tenacity and will to win the ball at the coalface, when Triffett wasn’t the one getting first possession he wasn’t far behind the ball winner to apply a tackle, rarely having opponents escape his grip once he got hold. Triffett earned two vital holding the ball free kicks inside 50 during the day, with one being on the boundary line in a pocket, where he slotted it easily, and the other being on a flank where he kicked to a pack for a teammate to hold a mark.

#33 Jack Briskey (Sherwood/Lions Academy)
18/01/2002 | 193cm | 86kg

Briskey split his time between the ruck and the forward line and ended up being one of his side’s more vital players with his presence in both roles. The speed and leap of Briskey are major weapons for him in his rucking and forward work, able to get easy separation on the lead and time his run and jump in the ruck to get above opponents. Briskey played as a major target for Queensland, slotting three goals.

Accumulator without much hurt factor. Unfortunately he’s the type of player the game is moving away from.

Briskey sounds like another Hippy sort of.

I found it interesting in an article that I was reading (forgot which) were they stated something along the lines of teams only thinking that they can carry two pure inside mids. It was in relation to the draft and looking at mids that have more than one string to their bow. You would say that Neale and Lyons would be those inside mids that we have for our best 22. I think we need to add more mids that play just on the outside of the contest after being able to win the ball on the inside.

Look out for Zac Taylor too, finds footy and has better kicking skills, hurt factor.

This is where I look at our current playing list, with Zac Bailey, and Ashcroft and Fletcher coming next year. I just don’t see the need/want for players like Sonsie, Ward, Rachelle, Taylor, or Judson Clarke.

I’d take Ashcroft now over Sonsie and Ward. Taylor or Clarke would be competing for a best 22 spot with Bailey and Fletcher.

Rachelle is a Toby Green type forward mid, and is one of the best kicks in the draft. He’d be competing with Rayner and Cockatoo for a spot, but would provide a different look.
