Analysis 2021 draft thread

It appears this forum have locked on to Sinn as a "sell the farm" to draft him. It certainly would be interesting to see the reactions if he is not selected even if available.
Interesting conclusion, but that's not what I've seen looking at this thread. There are those who want Goater, Johnson or JVR at our first pick, and Sonsie has his fans too. Not quite locked on, and I haven't seen anyone suggesting we sell the farm either.

You'd have to think Sinn would be best available, or close to it, at that selection though. He was rated around the middle of the top 10 before the season started but got pushed back due to injury and the interrupted season, whereas Wanganeen-Milera had a full season. He also fits a need, both by position and by his biggest weapon (speed).

If the club pass on him even though he's available at our selection, I'll just accept that their talent evaluation was different to mine (and many others') and be happy with whoever they took instead. Our talent evaluation has been decent under the current regime, enough to have faith in. Perhaps an even better prospect falls to us instead. Or maybe Sinn didn't interview well. I'm sure there would be good reasons.

Can't believe no-one, especially the media "experts", is talking about Joel Trudgeon, the Northern Knights captain. Just completed what's been hailed as the greatest Champion Data statistical season ever, numbers that dwarfed Nick Daicos and everybody else playing midfield. Dunno if it's because he's already 19, but I have a feeling it's partly due to the papers wanting to talk up Daicos and Darcy, the father/son picks, and it wouldn't sound as impressive if they went at pick 5 or 6.

I see today we have picks 14, 32 and 68 subject to FS and Academy shifts. Joel is clearly not going to be picked up early, if the "experts" are to be believed, but if he's available at 68, or even 32, it's worth going for him. I watched him as a kid; although not silky-skilled, he's a determined, hard-nosed ballgetter. I'd love to see him in maroon, blue and gold.

Yeah, he scared me there too... Was wondering if I had missed a pick swap.

Off the top of my head, we have 14, 18, 41.

Sorry guys, got it today fro a Fox Sports site headed "Suns the kingmakers; every club's future draft hand" written by a guy named Max Laughton dated 24th of October. I thought we had 18 too, but Fox article shows Sydney with it as a swap from Melbourne.
Don't shoot the messenger 😁

The Brisbane Lions also hold selections late in the first round (Picks 14 and 18), but it’s understood they’re keen on drafting a small forward and a rebounding defender, especially after the retirement of Grant Birchall.

Campbell Chesser (Sandringham Dragons) and Darcy Wilmot (Northern Knights) are rebounding half-backs that are expected to be taken in the 15-25 pick range, while tough GWV Rebels forward-mid Sam Butler — the brother of premiership Tiger and Saints forward Dan Butler — would also be in the mix.

I thought we were picking best available talent?

I don't think we need either but we shouldn't be ignoring KPPs too many drafts in a row. With our age profile I definitely wouldnt use a first rounder on a KPD though. Has to be someone we think is a good chance to end up a forward.

Happy to go into 2022 with Andrews, Adams, Gardiner, Payne, Lester or even McStay down back and Daniher, Hipwood, McStay, Fort and Fullarton in the forwardline
Totally agree, Lions don't need to chase a KPD as our first or second round picks in this years draft. Adams just resigned for two more years, Andrews resigned for another 3 or 4 years, Payne resigned for another 3 years, Gardiner still young, and if we need to can extend Lester for another year in 2023. I still believe we lack foot speed in the midfield, no doubt Bailey will have more time in the midfield in 2022 and Raynor looks like he has trimmed down to give himself a real chance to spend a lot more time in the midfield in the next couple of years. First two selections at this years draft we should look at mids with real speed to replace Neal, Lyons, Zorks in the next few years.

The KPP issue I see is that Andrews, Adams and let's say Gardiner are in our best 22 that leaves Payne as the only other genuine key position defender on our list as Lester is certainly more of a 3rd tall, what makes it more worrying is that all of Adams, Gardiner and Payne have had significant injuries for long periods of time. Personally I can't see how we don't pick a KPD at some stage in this draft whether its early or late.
I agree with taking the best available mid with pace and versatility with our first pick, but we do also have a couple of mids with pace coming next year as well.

I wonder if Leek Alleer could last until our current pick 41.
