All of this inconvenience and complication could have been saved with the simple rule of "we're never, ever putting Carlton on Friday night again".

Carlton still being looked after by the AFL for free TV exposure

Rd 1 and 2 Thursday night
Rd 4 Saturday night game on 7 v Suns
Rd 7 and 8 Sunday 3.20pm EST game on 7 v Essendon and Bulldogs

Am I trading this right?

We finally get some Saturday night games and neither of them are stand alone?

Saturday night games are never standalone in the AFL. The difference though is that one is televised nationally on Channel 7, whereas our two Saturday night games against Brisbane and West Lakes are televised by Foxtel and are only shown on Channel 7 in their local markets (QLD & SA for round 7, SA only for round 8).

Why would AFL fans want to watch two preliminary finalists gunning for a premiership this year when you can watch Sydney v Geelong?

I might have jumped the gun as they haven't officially announced the broadcasters, but a Sydney v Vic team is more appealing to 7 Melbourne based executives than a showdown. If Sydney 7 executives get involved then even more so.

If Brisbane v Port is a 7 game then 7 in Sydney/NSW don't show it they get to put on the Sydney v Geelong game.

Same with the showdown, 7 in Sydney/NSW don't show it they get to put on the Sydney v Melbourne game.

Its good we go into the Melbourne in both examples above, but MG and KFC would pay more if they knew we would get shown in Sydney more often.

The AFL Broadcast Guide - AFL.com.au doesn't go past Round 5 yet but I think you are spot on.

Carlton, Richmond, Sydney, and the Western Bulldogs receive two free-to-air matches.

Essendon, Geelong, and Melbourne receive one.

Thrilling, as usual.

Nobody in Sydney is watching though.
You'd be surprised how many people are watching at clubs and pubs on a Friday or Saturday night that are never counted in official ratings stats. Not so much on Saturdays and Sundays.

Plus if CEO's, marketing managers, etc of our sponsors, who live in Sydney, can flick on the TV and see us regularly, they are going to be happier when regular meetings with Ports and contract extension negotiations take place, compared to if they rarely see us.

We were never going to get the Friday night games those weeks looking at the fixture from the weeks before. Round 6 we play Sunday night so pretty unlikely they were going to get us to play Friday night at the Gabba for Round 7, and round 8 there is a grand final rematch which clearly Ch7 were going to want as the Friday night game.

The "floating fixture" was supposed to be used to reward the better performing teams but you can pretty much look through the whole year and guess which games will get Friday night treatment already. We might get lucky enough to sneak a Round 9 home Friday night against the Bulldogs but I'd wager it'll be Richmond v GWS instead. After that we'll probably get a Thursday or Friday Round 13 game against Geelong during the bye rounds and that'll be it in terms of primetime nationally broadcast games. We might get a few Saturday night Ch7 games but they'll have to be against big Vic teams for Ch7 to care and won't be broadcast into every state.

So this is a remaining fixture. After 5 games we have a better understanding of how other teams are performing. WB are at the moment a lot better than anticipated. Same Sydney and Adelaide (for now). Brisbane and Geelong have been quite average for flag fancies.

Anyway, RussellEbertHandball can correct me, but I think we can afford to drop up to 5 games if we want to finish at least top-4. We already dropped one vs WC. That gives us 4. I highlighted below the ones that we would definitely be expected to drop in red, and the potential losses (depending on how teams are travelling) in bold. We still need to beat Geelong, Sydney, StK and Melbourne at home. Possibly both showdowns, which regardless of form are always difficult. Not a lot of margin for error.

Round 6 Sun 25 Apr 6:10pm Saints Adelaide Oval
Round 7 Sat 1 May 12:00pm Lions Gabba

Some really good top of the table clashes coming up at home, should have 3 or 4 Friday night games (if the league wasn't so VFL centric).

16-6 will get you at least 4th, except twice -
2016 when 4th, 5th and 6th were 16-6 and 140% got you 4th, most premiers don't get 130% let alone 140%.
2011 GC expansion effect, so the top 4 teams won 20,19,18 and 17 games.

15-7 will get you 4th this year, it won't be as even as 2016. But 4th only gets you a rare GF appearance
2002 Collingwood, 2006 Sydney, 2020 Geelong

Triple heavyweight champions win flags from 3rd, 3 of the 4 triple champs in this system did it in their 3rd year.
2003 Brisbane, 2015 Hawthorn, 2020 Richmond ( Geelong 2011 did it from 2nd)

MCG home tenant teams win from 3rd
2017 Richmond, 2019 Richmond

Or Sydney, in 2005, 2012

Finishing 1st or 2nd is our best chance to win a flag, unless Covid strikes again and there's no MCG GF.

Would it kill the AFL to give us some day games? The only bit of sunlight Port have seen is the first half v Essendon.
The club's top 3 time slots requests in order are Friday night, Saturday night and Saturday twilight.

Can't help it that the w***ers at Dockland shut the roof for a 1.10pm game v North in Rd 1.

Looking at the draw it's possible we could have double ups against:

1. Top 4 match with Dogs
2. Carlton, Saints and Pies (3 possible bottom 6 sides)
3. Away Showdown

I'm aware of what happened previously but there is no excuse not to finish with 4/5

It's better than ending up with West Coast twice, Richmond and Bulldogs

Dogs have similar finish but face up with Melbourne
Melbourne have the harder finish
Sydney have more than likely 4 very winnable double ups.

We need to keep winning games, because it's likely positional changes won't happen late in the season.
