Its not bad actually - we certainly wont be able to use the fixture as any sort of excuse.
There’s still time. We don’t know how many shorter breaks we’ll have.

This was my immediate reaction.

Round 2 we get the chance to be in front of them for the first time since 1914. That's 106 years.

It was on ANZAC Day 1914, except there wasn't a thing called ANZAC Day at the time as the Gallipoli landings were still another year away!

All things being well we can be there at the G to witness this historical event in just 5 months' time.
We were in front of them in 1981 when we beat them by 1 point at Victoria Park.

Some might see the draw as being kind; I’m not optimistic of us winning 12

The first 5 are tough. Feasibly 1-4

The next 4 (bombers, suns, kangas, swans) are our best chance of three wins in a month.

The run home isn’t easy, even if we don’t have to go interstate

I think the closest we've been other than the last few years was 3 games in 1993-94. We then had that period between 94-97 when they beat us 7 in a row and 10 out of 11. Horrible period.

The AFL fixturing shits me. Doggies first up is the AFL and broadcasters reaching for the lowest common denominator for cheap marketing purposes. It lowers itself doing this.

Didn't both clubs request this opening fixture match? Been going for a number of years I think...

You're absolutely right, my spreadsheet had placed the 7 games that took place in the 1800s at the end of the list, not the top. (Kinda like the millennium bug). Because we won all 7 of those games it massively threw out the rest of the timeline. D'oh!

That game in 1981 was the last time we were in front.

Yeah, then the rest of the 90s and early 00s weren't really any better. We even managed to lose to them in 2002 when they won the spoon and we made the GF.

We were -12 against them only 11 years ago. Since then, 16 wins out of the last 20 makes this a golden age.

Not that I want to make excuses but that game was round 3, you often get results like that early on the season.

I remember being at that game, one of the most disappointing H&A losses I’d been to till that stage.

Yeah even though we made the GF that season, we were still finding our feet off the back of no finals for 7 seasons (lost to Rich R1 and beat WCE via Brodie Holland snaring 8 in R2) and while Carlton won the spoon they were coming off the back of finals so it wasn't a howler of a game at that time as disappointing as any loss against them is.

I tend to remember the game in about R17 or R18 when we beat them by 108pts, 141-33. I'm still filthy McKernan kicked a goal in the last minute otherwise we were up by 114. As it stands, our GWM is 108 pts from that game, while theirs agst us is 111 (the last suburban battle in 2000).

Probably our softest fixture in years, really.

Really? 5 interstate trips, 3 of this years finalists and 2 traditional foes twice. What more were you expecting?

Personally, I don’t think you can take too much from the draw anymore. More often than not it’s about when in the season you play each team and who you have available at the time.

Don’t count your chickens.... I recall going to the game last time we were in that position. It didn’t end well.

No Richmond/Geelong x2 - only once to Perth/Brisbane. And only one interstate game in last 9 rounds.

Works for me.

Not sure too many excuses will avail themselves.

Re: 2002 yes, we didn’t really find our feet until that Brisbane game in Round 8, another classic.

Should have a crowd of at least 50k.

With all the members turning their back on the club and burning their memberships, everyone who wants to go should be able to.
Yep I’ll be watching on TV as I didn’t renew my membership. Still support the team like crazy and yell at the tv but not a financial supporter.

Once to Perth and Brisbane is common for all Vic clubs unless you sell games.

Biggest factor is the double up matches. We slipped into 6 and this has earned us a tough draw. Amongst the top 6 Rich and Geel would be tougher but Bris and Port don’t look like they are going away.

Middle 6 I reckon WCE and Carl may be the toughest combo and Ess not the easiest bottom 6 side

On any basis our draw looks tough in Dec but who knows when it all boils down. Usually isn’t much difference but for what it’s worth this is one of the tougher draws anyone got for 2021. IMHO.
