Yeah, will be interesting to see which team blinks first in regards to taking a new engine, as if both take new PU's for the next race (and change enough parts so both automatically have to start from the back of the grid), I believe penalties are taken in the order they are received so if RBR take theirs first (including MAX +3 grid penalty) and then MERC take theirs for HAM, you may well see VER start in front of HAM at the back of the grid.

And looks like it was actually Ferrari that has blinked first.

Now it will probably be a rush between RBR and MERC (If MERC were still planning for HAM to take a new engine at Sochi) to see who notifies the FIA first that they will be taking new engine components to see who will start in front of the other, as now LEC will be starting infront of both.

Hamilton, Leclerc and Max from the back in a predicted wet race, yes please.

Another McLaren 1-2 incoming

Feels like it could be a wildcard weekend if all the frontrunners are at the back. Bottas will still be at the front however.

Honestly if McLaren are up there again for the win, I hope its Lando this time. Would be well deserved

Watching the Schumacher documentary, what’s the fin out the right hand side of the rear wing, it was on both the Benetton and the 96 Ferrari?
No other cars seemed to have it.

Onboard camera that produces this angle

They eventually did away with them when they started falling off and retiring cars like Alesi's camera killing Berger's car at Monza 1995

And onboard cameras were small enough to be fitted properly overlooking the driver.

Could it be that in a predicted wet race at Sochi which is a notoriously difficult track to overtake , that RBR gamble on Verstappen qualifying at the front of the grid, taking his three grid penalty, and banking on Max using his superior wet weather skills to win the race - You could change power units at Turkey or the Texas GP which are more amenable to overtaking.

In other news, Melbourne is on the F1 provisional calendar for April 2022.

Agreed - Paul Ricard hits the double. It's hideous to look at, and impossible for drivers to pass. Thus both the circuit, nor the racing, are ugly to watch.
Its great for overtaking on the game, easier to follow and then simple overtakes down the straight

Can Max take the engine penalty, start from the back of the grid, and wipe out his 3 grid spot penalty without losing any actual grid positions?

Also, how does qualifying work for drivers with "back of the grid" engine penalties? Are they still required to do qualifying? If so, it's a huge bonus for drivers finishing just outside the top-10, who don't make it into Q3. They'll be elevated into top-10 grid positions, but still get to start on their choice of tyre, instead of the ones used to set their fastest time in Q2.

I guess there's nothing to stop those with "back of grid" engine penalties from just cruising around in Q1, without setting a fast time, and thus preserving their tyre options for the actual race. Bit of a moot point though, if it ends up being a wet race, and having tyres banked makes no difference.

You used to have to set a qualifying time within 107% of the top time in q1 in order to qualify for the race.
Not sure if that is still in place

So they cruise around in Q1, setting a time comparable with Haas. They don't bother trying to get into Q2. Bank the extra sets of tyres, giving them greater options for the race - and they can start on their preferred compound? Not a bad outcome, given that they know they're going to be starting at the back of the grid regardless.

... of course, the wet weather will likely screw with those plans.

Penalties are applied in the order they are given which is why I’ve mentioned it’s interesting to see who will blink first.

As it stands right now, Max has his 3 place penalty applied first, then if he changes engines and cops the 15 place penalty it automatically puts him at the back of the grid (effectively making the 3 grid penalty null and void).

Since Ferrari have already notified the FIA that LEC is taking a new engine, he will be in front of Max at the back if RBR take their engine penalty. If Merc then decided they want HAM to take a new engine, he would be behind both LEC and Max.

This is just going off what has publicly been announced, the FIA at this stage haven’t released what engine penalties etc are being applied this weekend, it’s just Ferrari are the only team that have publicly stated they are taking a new engine.
