Umpires are integral to the game and work in close proximity to players. Incedental and accidental contact is unavoidable and should be treated as such.
Greene deliberately went out of his way to intimidate and make contact with the umpire. If that happens in a pub theres only one meaning behind it.

And just in case anyone has forgotten the history, this is just what he's been found guilty of over the years:

If he ticks the "Eric Cantona flykicking a spectator" box he's outdone David Rhys-Jones.

I noticed it live and thought it might cause controversy but I do think he was trying to avoid hurting him more than intimidating... but you technically can't "touch" an umpire.

Well obviously the message still ain’t sinking in!

Perhaps the AFL needs to get the South Australian CPHO to have a word to these numbskulls [emoji848]

Any suspension of 8 weeks or greater would end his career.

He's already got 8 weeks worth of suspensions under his belt so another 8 weeks means he's deregistered.

Edit: Thankfully he only got 3.
doesn't work like that at AFL level

From the Fox Footy site:

"Dogs coach Luke Beveridge has been open in his dissatisfaction with English’s performances in the ruck position in recent times, with Lachie Young now playing as a sudo-ruckman to cover."

We have professional journalists employed in Australia who don't even know how to write the word PSEUDO. [emoji1787]

Care to take a read

3.2.2 Criteria for Deregistration (a) Players i) Players shall be automatically deregistered and not allowed further registration with the same or another Club or League (except in accordance with section 3.3) if the Player has served a combined total of sixteen (16) matches Suspension (or greater) as a Player or Official (including as a Player during the Player’s AFL Competition career, subject to section 3.2.2(c) below) as a result of Reportable Offences only. For the avoidance of doubt, a Player who is deregistered will also not be allowed to act as an Official in the same or another League or in any Competition.

Nah bush lawyer in me says it doesn't apply to the elite comps. They are separately defined in the Policy.

Definitions

AFL Competition (or AFL Competitions) means one or both of the elite national men’s or women’s competitions (as the context dictates).

Club means an Australian football club fielding a team within a Competition conducted by a Football Body

All its says about the AFL is that any suspensions from playing AFL carry over to a lower comp (less 25%) once a player retires.

So an AFL player who retires with 10 weeks notched up, starts their new career in a lower comp with 7.5 weeks already on the board.

I get the ruling and optics around touching umpires but far out I feel bad for Toby Greene. Wears his heart on his sleeve, tough as nails.

There's not much in the incident in isolation, he brushed past the umpire and obviously wasn't going to escalate it but I get it, it's the look of the game stuff and no leeway should be given but far out. I would be devastated to have no chance of playing in a premiership from an incident like that.

Get real - he chose to make contact.

He's a professional sportsman and if he doesn't understand his responsibilities to every kid running around umpiring games in the country I've got no sympathy for him.

Hopefully Gil proceeds with the appeal and Greene gets the 6 weeks the AFL were requesting.

Whoops - you forgot to highlight the bit where you said
"I feel bad for Toby Greene ".

I have no sympathy for him - he's an idiot.
What does that have to do with me acknowledging and supporting the decision to suspend him? Don't blame your lack of understanding on me. I made it really clear, if you want to nitpick and take bits out of context that's on you. I really don't care what you think of him haha

yeah, I saw that but pretty sure it's not applied due to the fact that AFL is judged on a far harsher scale than other leagues. not sure we've seen a player in quite a while get that many weeks to even test the waters,

but.

Diesel - 34 weeks
C.Brown - 28 weeks
Baker - 28 weeks
B.Hall - 26 weeks
Plugger - 21 weeks
Fletcher - 20 Weeks
Dipper - 18 weeks

Taken out of context. Don't think so.

You said you'd "feel bad for him" if ended up missing a premiership because he'd made intentional contact with an umpire. I don't.

I have no sympathy (or indeed any respect) for him or any player who intentionally makes unreasonable contact with an umpire.

Hope the AFL appeal and he gets 6 weeks.

To use your words - Whoops - you forgot to highlight the bit where I said;

First you deliberately took it out of context for a try at a nice gotcha moment, now you're being deliberately disingenuous - because I didn't just say I felt bad for him and left it at that, I explained what I felt and what I thought and I did so quite clearly - if you can't comprehend it I'm not sure how much more I can spell it out to you. You can both feel for a player and also understand why they got suspended. Yes you have mentioned you have no sympathy for him already - I couldn't care less.

If he was suspended for 6 weeks for knocking a bloke unconscious I wouldn't feel sympathy, but he ran past and made contact with an umpire. It's 3 or 6 weeks because of what it does to the look of the game and the strict nature around contacting umpires. He didn't hurt the guy, he nudged him. So with that being understood I get why the penalty is so harsh but because he didn't hurt anyone and will still miss a chance at playing in a premiership I feel some level of sympathy to him. Easy to understand surely.

Mclachlan talked about an appeal tonight and I think he was even surprised at the leniency of the "sentence" especially as he had met all the criteria of intentional contact according to the tribunal. One thing is for sure GWS wont be appealing because they know they got away with one.
