The primary preventative for more new umpires is the current umpires and the elitist culture of their department.
This society is to blame narrative is a bunch of hogwash.
Well that’s clearly not true. I think I have enough experience in this area to tell the reason they can’t get umpires has zero to with elitest culture. Clearly that’s crap. Kids wouldn’t even understand what are talking about They can’t get umpires because of the crap they cop as kids and because of the endless bagging in social media. Kids understand that

Maybe not the primary preventative but the culture of the department would be a factor.
It's not uncommon that a prospect will be putting in the hard yards and making a case for themselves with their fitness metrics and match day conduct, only to be overlooked for a favourable candidate who may or may not have reached the same level of competency.

Hypothetically, imagine that a current AFL umpire for example hasn't been held to the same standards of fitness testing that others are held to. You can imagine how disillusioned you'd be if you were ticking all the boxes but left waiting in the wings while a less qualified individual was promoted ahead of you.

Saying that, feral supporters are definitely a huge factor as well. I've known kids getting glass bottles thrown at them from angry parents, and female umpires being sexually harrassed and stalked. Local leagues are inexcusably out of control. But we know there are issues and challenges at every stage of the umpire's career and I think the AFL needs to do better.

Thanks for the insight on what the youth reckon these days. Them kids and their sneakers with their boom boxes and ninetendos sure do confuse the heck out of me and grandma sometimes.
But seriously, bullsh1t.
How many ex players have made it through the umpiring system since the league allegedly started trying to recruit them?? 1x Leigh Fisher and that's it.
Well over 1000 players have passed through club land since that initiative and you're telling me that all is well and it's social media that's the problem?
Pigs ar$e mate. 1 ex player in over ten years aught tell you that something stinks

The shi77y culture in the AFL umpiring ranks has been known about for a long long long time but the AFL in true form has made any criticism of them "out of bounds" (boom tish).
Now everyone is doing mental and linguistic calisthenics to invent other reasons because their afraid to call a spade a spade.

On top of the number of times others have said the same, my information comes direct from a guy I used to know who was in the system but quit because he couldn't stand them. He described the advancement policy as pure nepotism, and that the job you held outside of umpiring had more relevance than your ability to umpire a game. This individual continued as a VFL umpire for years. Said he'd never go back and he didn't.
How may on the current mob do you think are working class individuals???

Anyway, I'm actually not disagreeing with you. What you posted is absolutely legitimate and also a problem, but the issues you see at a grass roots level aren't the only cause of the problem.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that a group lawyers and solicitors have over time changed the laws and culture of the game to prevent accountability or scrutiny on themselves. That is precisely what legal culture is..

Jordan Binnister was an ex player and he's actually a decent standard compared to Fisher. David Rodan is a goal umpire, he's the one that's always smiling at goals like a teammate just kicked it.

Hickey with 2 goals at qrt time. What’s billy longer up to?

I tell you what this Heeney bloke looks alright. Reckon we should go after him. ;)

I wouldn't mind us picking up a couple of these young Swans guns, they still owe us for Tony Lockett and Barry Hall.

sydney playing very very well
Of course they are the one side we play twice this year that didn’t make finals last year - good chance we play five 2021 finalists twice this year.

If Essendon manage to cause the upset over Port we only need to beat the Dees by 4 goals to finish the night top of the table.

If Port win, we'd need to smash Melbourne.

I am not a big fan of Port but would love to see them roll the Injectors by 100.
We have them next week and it’s their home game. Big danger game for us. don’t need to give them any more ammunition.

seriously our draw looks tougher and tougher as every game goes on. Just have to keep winning and hope that somehow these teams we play twice all suddenly turn to shit.... which I somehow doubt.
