2021 Injuries

Every year we think that the injury toll cannot be worse than last year - then the new season's injury toll rolls in.

Coniglio, Davis, Whitfield, de Boer, Hogan, Lloyd, Kennedy, Preuss, Riccardi is a fair spine of the best 22 side. And no longer do we have the depth to cover such losses.

Sheesh!

GREATER Western Sydney captain Stephen Coniglio could face an extended period on the sidelines after a nasty ankle injury during the club's 34-point loss to Melbourne on Sunday night. And the news could get even worse for the Giants, who also finished the game with key defender Phil Davis and tagger Matt de Boer on the bench.

Coniglio was in obvious discomfort after being tackled by Tom Sparrow in the second quarter, with coach Leon Cameron revealing his captain was unable to put weight on the affected ankle. "He had a couple (of syndesmosis ankle injuries) a few years ago that were quite nasty. This one didn't look good," Cameron said. "Cogs is emotional and it's an emotional game, because you don't like to see your captain go down. I feel for him. He's had a tough 12 months, but he was on the way back and copped this. In true Coniglio fashion, he'll bounce back."

Davis limped off in the second quarter and played no further part in the match, while de Boer, who curbed the influence of Clayton Oliver in the opening half, tweaked his hamstring in the third quarter.

Cameron added it is too early to speculate how much football the three injured leaders will miss. It adds to a worrying injury list that already includes the likes of Lachie Whitfield, Jessie Hogan, Adam Kennedy and Braydon Preuss.

I will get in early with my version based on last weeks report and the injuries from the game

It doesnt look good with several in-game injuries and based on the history of the club in rehab it will be a very depleted team at the MCG on the weekend

Phil Davis
30yrs + multiple calf injuries = cooked
Would love to be wrong. The bloke has been a champion of the club.
Will they replace him whilst injured with Keeffe, another 30 year old, or give the opportunity to a younger player? I’m all in for development for the rest of 2021.

Unfortunately, I thought exactly the same when it happened.

Problem is, apart from Stein there's no young/developing KPD waiting in the wings. Unless we revert Jack Buckley into defence (which we might have to, and TBH, he looked OK in one of the games he played there last year). Or Zach Sproule. We needed to draft a young KPD last year when Corr left. :(

Our rehab group is so large that if it met the club would be in breach of COVID training group protocols.

It’s now at 40 per cent of our first 22, including TOJ.
It's as bad as it's ever been, but much earlier than we've ever experienced.

While not looking to actively lose games, we need to write off this year and pump some games into the younger blokes such as Riccardi, Briggs, Ash, Green, Idun, Cumming, Bruhn, Stone to get them game time ... and hope like hell we don't have even more injuries.

Don't know what St. Kilda's excuse is but if you look at the bottom 5 clubs, 4 of them missing their top-liners. Think G.C. will really begin to struggle too now.

We had 4 of our starting backline out Friday.

Can't compete when that happens. Games into the kids lads.

Is there any expectation that Phil may be up for line coaching when he retires, or is it going to be a full time media career?

A well managed club would be making sure his vast skills, experience and profile are not lost the day he hangs up his boots.

Phil’s already the club’s de-facto spokesman on every topic, including those that management are too terrified to touch.

Let’s hope management can get this one right.

I 'm guessing someone as well spken as Phil would prefer a media career rather rhan the pressure cooker of coaching.

The season is well and truly shot now and the spoon is a possibility

So the thing I would like to see now is try every young player we have. No excuse for young players to leave for lack of opportunity now like Caldwell

Bulldogs and other teams have surprised over the years by injecting youth

Now the giants have no choice but to try this because every player on the brink of retirement is injured. Never know it may be a blessing in disguise

Rehab Report: Round 6

Veteran Sam Reid has suffered a low-grade hamstring injury in Saturday’s thrilling Sydney Derby win.

Reid was subbed out of the game in the third quarter but scans have revealed relatively good news.

GIANTS Head of Medical Cullan Ball said:

“Reidy has unfortunately injured his hamstring in his return from suspension but it is on the minor side,” Ball said.

“We’d expect him to miss just one or maybe two weeks with it.”

Draftee Cameron Fleeton and defender Jake Stein both picked up injuries in the VFL match on Saturday.

Fleeton suffered a concussion in the second quarter and took no further part in the game. He’ll now go through the standard 12-day concussion protocols and be unavailable for selection this week.

Stein hurt his thumb in the same game which will sideline him for six-to-eight weeks.

“Steiny played out the game but unfortunately subsequent scans on his thumb revealed a fairly major injury,” Ball said.

“He’ll see a surgeon today which will determine how long he will be sidelined for but we’d expect it to be in that six-to-eight week range.”

Important defender Harry Perryman is expected to be available to take on the Western Bulldogs in Canberra on Friday night after recovering from glandular fever.

“Harry has steadily improved over the past few weeks,” Ball said.

“He’ll train on Wednesday and will need to get through that well but we expect him to put his hand up to play.”

The GIANTS take on the Bulldogs at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday night with the VFL side taking on Footscray at Blacktown International Sportspark on Thursday evening.

Great news that Lachie is on track for a R8 return.

Terrible news re Stein. He looked good against the Swans in the ECFL. Hopefully he gets the luck he deserves later in the season.

Current soft tissue injury count (most of them extremely severe) now 6 (Haynes, Hutchesson, Davis, De Boer, Reid, Lloyd). Add in Hogan who broke down and missed a vital chunk of pre-season.

Brisbane (Damien Austin) = 1 Adductor (Test)
Melbourne (Darren Burgess) = 0

We know the comparisons were the same last year. And it's been the same story most of the previous years at GWS.

As best I can tell Nick Poulos is head of High Performance. Was the same last year. Also was the understudy in the catastrophic David Joyce era.

Any idea who this guy has photos of to keep his job? Leon sounded frustrated in his presser.

One day we will have a really good run with injuries, unfortunately we will have such a dud side by then it won’t mean a thing

Preuss seems to be tracking well? Does he come in ahead of Flynn or alongside when fully fit?
Ahead of IMO. We've seen Flynn managed for those couple of weeks after only a few games. He's struggled to run out games at times. Preuss would (hopefully) be solid.

Footy Phil said he looks to be tracking well ahead of schedule. The injury report says 7-9 more weeks but he speculated that it would be no more than 7.
