If Eddie gets another year...
Means a kid (McDonald(R), Kennedy(R), Honey(R), Cottrell(R), Parks(R)) is more than likely going to get delisted,
just so Eddie can play 1 more year...

Before any re-signings we have to get rid of a minimum...
The Main List
x3 for national Draft, + x1 Rookie Upgrade (owies) + Any Trades
Rookie List
x2 Rookie Draft + 2x MSD

Just makes no sense, Honey, Owies, Durdin, Fisher are all more than capable holding down the small forward position...
Plus it's 1 less position for a rookie KPP...
Don't need 3 in national draft. Rookie upgrade counts towards it.

Also think that it might be a minimum of 2 again this year due to reduced list sizes. (At a guess)

If we bring in Cerra, it will be who they want and who we don't need if he comes. So the question is who that is? Probably SPS with Cerra seen as an upgrade on him. That's what I think.

We need to replace Ed and Newnes with better kicks who won't bring other weaknesses to the side, trades need to be all about that. That and upgrading on who we have.
no-one is picking up ed or newnes.............

I’m hoping for just 5 changes.
If we can bring in a tall defender then I’d happily just use our first and second in the draft and leave it at that.
Boyd, Murphy and Cas will be moved on so that’s 3.
Sadly I imagine SPS is gone but hopefully we can turn him into a decent tall defender. Even if we have to add later picks or future late picks along with him to get a decent one.
Maybe make one more trade or Eddie to retire and that’ll give us the five we need. After that I’m not disappointed about keeping anyone.
I think there will be a massive clean out next season.

Hope we keep our 1st Round Pick, this year and hopefully somehow can get another one...
Don't feel comfortable trading it out two years in a row, missing out on the top self talent...

Look at what selling multiple years first rounders have done for
West Coast, Hawthorn, Geelong (teetering on the edge), St Kilda and Collingwood lists...

The majority of our best players this year, McKay, Cripps, Walsh, TDK, Weitering Dow, Silvagni, Stocker...
Then players have shown glimpses O'Brien, Owies, Honey, Williams, Curnow, Cuningham, Fisher, SPS...
All came from the draft...

Unless it’s a midfielder, say Cerra , Linpinski, or Young , Dogs ( tall key defender ), Ruckman , Ladhams, Port , Lynch , Pies.
These young and talented with good upside are fine and would be excellent additions.

Long post incoming.

I'd be looking at 8 changes to the list this season, which is not aggressive by any means, but also we arent presently in the top echelon of teams, so its not entirely unfounded. Turnover the list by under 20% to keep it fresh, but also maintain a level of consistency in our playing core.

2 players that will retire and have no outgoing value: Murphy & Casboult.

We have too many fwd/mids, mids that are slow/low tanks and 'not-quite' KPPs. Please keep in mind the wider strategy and net gains before nit picking individual players or sections of this post.

With that in mind, the 6 players that will be on the market and/or delisted, that may have value: S P-S (ooc), McGovern (2 yr), Marchbank (1 yr), Gibbons (ooc), Setterfield (1 yr), Cottrell (ooc)

S P-S, McGovern and Setterfield are the only ones that could bring in more than a 3rd rounder.
McGovern contract is an albatross though, don't see a big market for a contracted Setters either tbh. S P-S will attract interest although value is low as has been dropped twice and is OOC, value is late 2nd Rd pick at best.

Gibbons is available for loose change, would rather punt it on the 6 fwd/mids i list below, and create room for a genuine mercurial small fwd. Marchbank available to a good home as well, he is a buyout candidate if no takers.
Cottrell is a DFA or rookie pick for oppo clubs, so no trade value here.

Hopefully the combination of these outgoings have enough currency to bring in 2 players via trade: Lipinski (late 2nd - or points equivalent) & a ruck/fwd like Ladhams (mid 2nd).

Then we take our 3 current picks to the draft:

1st Rd: Best mid available/ (pray for Callaghan)
2nd Rd: Best KPF/McGov replacement (Amiss hopefully)
4th Rd: Mercurial fwd pocket/future Eddie replacement

Rookie Draft

1st: Mature key def / Marchbank replacement (Schlensog)
2nd: C McKay (f/s) / Stocker understudy
Cat B: Dom Akuei (key def/utility big/ Jones understudy)

Of course there will be rookie promotions and demotions to balance the list properly, but I have omitted due to long post already.

This leaves us with the following list structure:

Team Depth Chart

De Koning - Pittonet - Mirkov : 1st ruck

*Ladhams* - McDonald : 2nd ruck / 3rd kp fwd
H McKay - *Amiss* : power key fwd
C Curnow - Silvagni : lead up key fwd

Betts - *???* : dynamic aerial small fwd
Owies - Durdin : crafty pressure small fwd

Honey - Martin : power half fwd / mid
Fisher - Cuningham : silky half fwd / mid
Philp - Fogarty : defensive half fwd / mid

Cripps - Kennedy : inside contested mid
Dow - *Callaghan* : inside burst mid
*Lipinski* - E Curnow : balanced running mid
Walsh - Carroll : balanced running mid

O'Brien - Williamson : left footed wing
Docherty - Newnes : right footed wing

Williams - Ramsay : playmaking half back
Stocker - *C McKay* : tough running small def
Saad - Boyd : pacey small def

Plowman - Parks : lockdown med def
Kemp - Newman : rebounding med def

Weitering - *Schlensog* : strong key def
Jones - *Akuei* : athletic key def

This Senior and VFL depth chart is indicative only really, everyone will have preferences on Best 22, so not looking for an argument there, just highlighting roles and potential depth.

More than a little harsh.

19 year old kid in his first season of footy.
Away from home during an incredibly difficult time.
7 VFL games in a very interrupted season.

Why on earth would we delist him? Because he hasn't lived up to the expectations of those who thought maybe he'd step straight into senior football because of his body type?

Facts don't matter when Tom Browne is concerned.
What that say about our New National recruiting manager? Delisted his first pick after one year. That’s a worry!

Only way SPS and O'Brien stay on the list next year, is if they accept a pay cut. Be interesting to see what happens here. My guess would be O'Brien stays, SPS goes.

I would trade Setterfield, but has 1 more year, so will most likely stay as we wouldn't get much for him. He's on solid $ so needs to pull his finger out next year, otherwise he's trade or massive pay cut.

Murphy and casboult to retire. I would retire betts on 350. Ed 1 more year.

2 of Gibbons, newnes, cottrell, newman will go. Boyd stays.

Ramsay most likely gone.

Pittonet will go if we can find an upgrade.

I like both of them and have done for years - couldn't wait to leave the ground after a win and hear finey give us a bump with one hand whilst life-banning some poor slob from chelsea with the other - connolly is a genuine footy journo, as opposed to an ex-player turned paid yakker - his print stuff is as good as sheahans, maybe not quite alf browns........
I was surprised at how little interest I had in listening to SEN after finey was given the boot. He bought some out genuinely interesting and surprisingly empowering content to what is otherwise a bunch of homogeneous vanilla footy 'talk'.

Updated (Long Post Alert)
As we are pretty much at the end of the year thought I would update my list post from the start of the year.. Fair few different changes..
Some of the choices may not be to everyone's liking, but we need a mini refresh...

It is also extremely difficult, you need to cut a minimum from:

Dont mind it at all and appreciate the work you have put in..
* Ed wont retire, he will want another year to play with Charlie, although will be doubtful if he will be best 22 next year.
* LOB hard to see him being offered more than 1 year.
* Parks showed enough in his few chances for me to want to see more, especially with how thin we are with KPD
* I think Setters will look for a new home, especially if DT stays
* Gibbons gets another year, has done enough, is well liked and a good influence on the group. He is good insurance even if he spends most of the year in the 2s.
* As harsh as it is i think our defence has moved on from Marchbank, his body cant be relied on and I really dont see a role for him in the side.

Of the players you have listed, i dont think we need a KPF, would rather keep what we have than overpay for someone to play reserves. KPD I like young.. HFF would take Lipinski in a heartbeat all though not certain its a need.. Midfielder if we are giving up a top pick Hopper is #1 priority, then Narkle and then Cerra IMO..

The most important decision for the list managers is they need to decide if TDK will be our #1 ruck, or is he going to be the forward who can pinch hit.. I am not certain yet because currently he isn't really strong at either role... If TDK is #1 ruck then we need a forward who can ruck, Chol is the only one on your list with that capability.. If TDK is going to be a fwd who can ruck, then we need a #1 ruck and someone who is considerably better than Pittonet... I dont like any of your list, and if we have to pay up then we should be prepared to do so.. Essendon identified Draper early, over paid at the time and now have there ruckmen for the next decade... we need to be prepared to do the same. Someone like Mathew Flynn from GWS is OOC this year, i would be happy to throw a future 1st and a 6 year deal in front of him.. I am sure there are others but in that 22-25yo have played 50 games etc and shown they have what it takes.

I’m hoping for just 5 changes.

I think there will be a massive clean out next season.

As we are already over the max list size allowed, by two players, cutting 5 as you said, would allow us to bring in 3 players total.

A call needs to be made on Owies, as his 2-3 year rookie time is up, i and most, think he will get a deal, meaning that would give us two picks in the draft, meaning no trades or free agents.

A team in our position, surely can’t think our list is so good, that we only have to take two players at the draft and thats it.

I’d actually be happy with three. One decent KPD and two early picks in the draft would do me. Our next pick would be in the ~60’s and I’d we happy to back in most of the guys on the list over that sort of a pick this season. We have too many unknowns for me to cut much

I thought you were required to take a minimum of 3 in the draft..

Like your post and you have put in a lot of work...
If we walked away with Schlensog, McKay & Akuei.. In the rookie draft we would have killed it IMO..

But, there are a couple of points that you will need to re-assess...
  • To take the 2 picks in the rookie draft, you will need to delist 4 players 2xPicks and 2x MSD... Where you have only delisted Cottrell(R)...
    Options are McDonald(R), Kennedy(R), Honey(R), Cottrell(R), Parks(R), Boyd(R) & Betts(R)
  • If we are to pick Akuei up as a Cat B rookie, we will have to delist or upgrade Owies to the main list
Understand how much work goes into these, good job...
FWIW I have considered all that, but didnt want to clutter the post too much.

Promote - M Owies**, M Kennedy*, J Honey*
Retain - A Mirkov*, L Parks*, E Betts*, J Boyd*, O McDonald*
Demote - J Newnes

Then when you add on the rookie picks you end up with 8 Cat A & 1 Cat B along with 36 Senior List for 45 total players.

36-8-1 is our current structure, but also 2 rookies above the current approved AFL list. I'm banking on lists returning to normal size (medi sub etc), albeit adding the 2 spots back on as rookies instead of senior list.

If it doesn't eventuate, they'll have to cut an extra 2 rookies. Probably Boyd and Mirkov tbh
