I think the 2 major reasons are lack of our own VFL team and development.Silvagni's drafting quality is about to come to light by season's end so there is still time. It's only looking around average at this stage. The talls he's drafted are really good however there is something missing with the midfielders. There is no doubt that we have selected talent when drafting midfielders however there aren't many performing at AFL level. I get that many of them are young still and they are mostly inside midfielders and they take a little longer however I thought we would be seeing a little more. I just wonder if we are overlooking running ability and ball winning ability when it comes to midfielders or whether we have failed to develop them well. Maybe they will come good, maybe guys like Dow, Stocker and Ramsay will start to make an impact at AFL level soon.
So what is it about this club and developing midfielders? Perhaps I am jumping the gun here as the VFL side has been going alright with some young Carlton midfielders running around there. Is it that these players are too young? Is it development or is it recruitment?
There is no doubt that injuries have hurt, we have a lot of young talent being held back by injury over recent years.
I get the feeling that a little list cleanout could be coming. New list manager, players at the start of the rebuild who haven't come on probably wont. The potential to trade some young ones if we happen to get interest from a top target and the desire for Austin to work his magic in the draft.
O'Brien has skills but doesn't get much of the footy or do much dropping back in defence and impacting. He's a high draft pick and already been passed by by Cottrell who wasn't even taken in the draft. He just seems to be lacking intensity and is purely outside which doesn't work. I can see O'Brien being delisted or traded at the end of the season, just not doing enough IMO.
Dow is another who has finally come to a good age and had a preseason and he's getting game time and he can't find the footy. He should be doing better. Is it lack of running ability or is it because he's a primary attacking inside midfielder who doesn't get to play that role because he's behind others? He should still be able to win the footy and run to the right spots and find it in other midfield roles. He does some nice things but hasn't had a massive game that really suggests he's going to make it. I think we have a lot of hope for Dow but he's another who may just end up somewhere else or gone completly. I'm happy to accept he could be a slow developer but who knows, I was hoping to see better footy from him.
Stocker is pretty young and I hope he comes into the team soon. He's playing ok in the VFL but not tearing it apart and forcing the coach to pick him. I think he needs to play some AFL footy soon to see if he can do the same at that level. I think he will make it but not sure if he's going to be a real top player yet.
Ramsay was a ball magnet who seems to be going pretty well, like Stocker he's pretty young and I think we might have found a player here. I hope. I think and hope we see him at AFL level this year, IMO he could be the missing type of midfielder we lack, that quick inside/outside mid who can kick.
Carroll I was hoping to see play soon but is injured. Looks to have some ability, already finding the footy from the get go is a real good sign.
Philp has been injured but he's a young player I hope will come on and perhaps play wing. Too early to tell here.
I just want to see that our young midfielders are getting over 25 possessions in the VFL regularly and getting 30+ on the odd occasion but it's not happening yet.
I don't know what is wrong with our recruiting of midfielders. Perhaps flashiness and athletic attributes and having nice skills have overshadowed the ability to find the football when it has come to our recruiting of midfielders because that just seems to be lacking from our young high draft pick mids, the ability to find it.
Hopefully things click into gear for us. SOS drafted some pretty good midfielders for GWS with high picks so not sure why our young mids wont work out.

Its just as likely that North will use their considerable Salary Cap room and make a god father offer to Harry..
I don't think anyone who runs out onto a footy field (be it at AFL or local level) can be described as soft.
I played footy as a junior for a couple of years at North Ringwood, but the game was too physically taxing and demanding on me (I have very mild cerebral palsy) and I had to quite and played Soccer and Basketball instead, which I was reasonably good at, also tried Tennis for a summer, but the less said about that, the better.
Footy is the one of the most physically demanding sports in the world, my Cousin is married to an American, and he is amazed how the players run around without any helmets or body padding.
In reality how much difference can one expect between 79 and 80? He is known for his running and kicking skills so he needs to show more of that. Why don’t we see him running on a wing and pinging it lace out to leading forward a few times a game? Is it because coach has given specific instructions or he doesn’t position well to receive the ball often enough or team mates over look him or he is just a bit confused as to exactly what his role is. I want to see more of what he is known to be good at. The rest will come with maturity.Ok say there is a scale of 1-100, 1 being people too scared to leave their house, 60 being people brave enough to play football and 80 being brave enough to put their body through he rigors of AFL and 100 being Luke Hodge/Kade Simpson/Adrian Hickmotts.
I put O'brien as a 79, where do you have him?
Love the both but why covered easily? Betts was threatening, defensively proficient and offers a threat above the head too. Be a little while before Fish has the best small forward of all time covered.More pressure but I think Fisher has him covered easily now in terms of performance.
Once fisher is back Betts has to go.

The 2017 draft really is a downer. 2 Top 10 picks.LoB to me doesn't seem like someone who doesn't want to throw their weight around, to me he looks like he isn't confident in his own body/weight to do it properly.
Hopefully if he adds some bulk this issue may go away.

Have you seen the Carlton injury update?
Please don’t block me because I question our high performance staff. Our club has hidden agendas particularly those people who are protecting there own appointments.

we don't say 2010 around here for several reasons.................shades of 2010...

And to the contingent who believe we need to go past Ed to be a flag contender, BANG! 32 important possessions and a physical presence in the scrap.
The year I joined BF??we don't say 2010 around here for several reasons.................
Well in this scale senario AFL players start at 80, so if it was a scale of 1-20 in toughness O'brien is actually -1. The only person to get a lower score is Kane Lucas With a negative 4
Liam Jones is currently our highest ranked player at 19
Other notables
2020/ 2021 Marc Murphy - 3
Cripps - 18
Fog - 17
Doc - 17
I almost feel like basing your opinion of a player on a sole weird, compacted year that kept a father from his four young kids...as opposed to, you know, the other fifteen years, might be a tad unfair...Betts body of work on the ground including last year has not been a success. Off the field probably offers plenty but last year in particular the second half the amount of fumbling was bordering on embarrassing.
Not a fan.
Tried to get a few bargains from the bargain boxWe have a tendency to recruit players with injury history.
