I have no horse in this race and purely an outsiders view
He is a talented kid that needs to and should be played as a wing/high half foward in the role marc murphy is playing with some rotations through the midfield
Its a shame that he is being played out of position and not able to show what he has at the level in his ideal attacking role.

Freo or West Coast would be crazy not to be asking the question or talking to him about a move and unfortunately for carlton he will pprobably be moved on for a 40-50 range pick.

Who else shall we give away for nothing. S'pose Fisher is only worth a third too.

One would at least expect a pick in the early 30-35 range, Sam was pick 5 /6 talented but unfortunately just doesn’t seems to not click with Teaugy.
SPS together and several very slow developing other high draft pick youngsters makes for a very gloomy picture.
Fingers crossed things turn around for Dow, LOB.

Come off it. A 23 year old top 6 draft pick that's played 88 games, no way does he get traded for pick 40 or below.
On the previous page we have someone suggesting that we will get a 5th rounder for him and he will go on to play 200 games. It gets likes and follow up comments in agreeance, even if they are only being facetious.
An opposition supporter, who is normally fairly level-headed when posting on our board, suggests that we might get a 3rd rounder and he's labelled a troll and run out of town.
We all know Samo's talent and potential, and I'm sure we'd all prefer to keep him, but if a WA team got in his ear and convinced him to ask for a trade, on current output and the fact that he has played VFL this year (who knows if/when he'll get called back up).
How much do you honestly think we would get for him if that scenario was to eventuate?

Port offered Pick 9 for Shaun Hampson.

Trade week can be a mixed bag sometimes. It’s also about being creative half the time. We would maximise his value maybe by using what we get in another deal. I’d hang the phone up if offered a third, uncontracted or not

And we knocked it back, only to trade Jacobs for a 30s pick. Doh..

It all depends on what you plan to do with the pick and how deep a draft is deemed to be. You can sometimes draft decent utilities with picks in the 40s, for instance, but if you set your plans too high and try for a once-in-a-generation player with the wrong pick you can stuff it up entirely. Getting hung up on trade value can sometimes be counterproductive. What if a draftee we value lasts to a pick that was offered to us for a certain player, and that player just languishes even further? You miss out on an opportunity. It all adds up; swings and roundabouts and all that.

First of all, would hope that someone in the club is making it their job to work through the current situation with Samo, and get him back on track. Think he's got the skills and potential to be a very good to excellent player, but has been derailed somehow, whether through coaching direction, being forced to play out of position, fitness or even another reason. If we don't get him back on track, another club will.

Now to the trade scenarios, let's be honest, if another team comes offering a third rounder, they're clearly not that interested in the trade, and we shouldn't be either. If he comes requesting a trade, I'd tell him he's a required player, and we expect him to stay. If a favourable deal lands in our lap, we could choose to budge on that stance. Sure either West Coast or Freo could satisfy us if they chose to. A pick in the 40s is far from a satisfactory trade for such a player, and we'd be stupid to panic and sell so low.

When you break it down.

Since 2019 when Teague took over and 2021 players that were on the list.
Our player development, is a sad issue, that has been overlooked by the club as a whole...

You still didn't really answer the question. I'd hope that we played hardball and either held onto him, or pushed for the best possible deal. That's a given and not the issue.

Given the fact that we have persisted in playing him in a role that he has clearly not shown to be good at (or even really shown any improvement in), dropped him to the VFL where he hasn't really set the world on fire, in his preferred position, in a league he should dominate. If nothing changed for the rest of the year and he publicly requested a trade back to WA, what do you think he would be worth? Not what do you want for him, or do you think we should trade him. What's his worth?
A point where the Blues say 'alright, it's definitely not working. He's definitely out the door. There's no point persisting. It's time to cut our losses'. And a price where Freo or WC don't say 'no, that's ridiculously high. We're walking away'.

I'd say a late second at best, sadly.

Alright, if pushed, I reckon he is worth a pick in the 20-25 range. A physical and perhaps mental refresh and I can see him good to go at the start of next season. Hopefully not at another club.

I think a lot of people are skipping the important point that you’re making - SPS is now being played in his preferred position at VFL level and still isn’t performing - of course with Covid that’s a bit delayed now - but if he doesn’t show much as a mid at VFL level for the rest of the year then why would we hold on to him and also why would any other club pay more than a third rounder for him?

The fact that he showed some glimpses as a mid a few years ago doesn’t really help when he’s not showing much at VFL level today

He may just need a mental break and the bye could help - or maybe a month off - and come back more hungry and focused - or maybe he just needs a complete change back in WA

He's been down and I get that. But some of the critical commentary seems way overstated based on the last month alone. I could be wrong, but hasn't he played only the one VFL game, where we were absolutely flogged by the hawks? Let's see at end of the season. Of course we now need the VFL season to recommence... timing is horrible.

Not sure what our development team has done with LOB the last couple of seasons. He had a strong second half of 2019 and has gone missing since then. At the very least he should be given an extended run along with SPS for that matter to build any trade currency at all. Both have very strong aspects to their game which would be of great value to other teams with different strategies; but the club seems hellbent on losing these players for a packet of chips. Personally I would like to see both stay as I believe both have their best footy ahead of them

I just fear that by the time we get our act together, it may be too little too late.

In 2019 LOB played 17 games - averaging 12.4 disposals, down from his 2018 numbers of 18 games and averaging 13.9 disposals. We then drafted Newnes at the end of the 2019 season. Newnes essentially took over LOB's role and played 17 games, averaging 13 disposals. LOB only played 1 game in 2020 and 1 game so far in 2021.

Was it worth playing Newnes over LOB for the last 2 years? Where would LOB be if we hadn't drafted Newnes? Who knows?

In 1 game?
Definitely a small sample size, but it was a pretty bad game. We're expected to believe that a 23yo former #6 draft pick, who has shown previously to be a capable AFL quality mid, now isn't capable of performing in the VFL?
He couldn't even crack the best 6 out of 10 AFL listed players in our team. I hope it all clicks back into place for him and we can play him in a more suitable position, but it's hard to deny that his form and value have dropped off a cliff.

I could understand it if Newnes was making the side better, or had a higher ceiling, but I think we're seeing the best we're going to get out of Newnes. Great for depth and backup, but surely LOB has a higher ceiling and more growth that we haven't seen yet? That alone, is reason enough to play him ahead of Newnes.

First half of 2019 LOB was playing some sort of decoy role swapping to the opposite wing so Walsh could chase the ball. would get 5 possessions in the first 3 quarters and the 4 in the last when the game opened up. Not good for a players development.

He needs a run of 4 games straight to see what he has got.

Newnes is a list clogger we need to part with at the end of the year. His Freo heroics gave him a free pass after a fairly underwhelming first 10 games. played a couple of good early season games and then returned to norm.

If we lose this week you'll be seeing plenty of them in the weeks ahead I reckon.
That should be our objective irrespective of results.
Let’s be straight Eagles are shadow of the team that would present at the pointy end of the business, so really no gauge or testament to the direction we’re heading , perhaps 4 or 5 consecutive wins would tell another story.
It’s purely a physiological barrier to climb over and get a win.
But sorting out the youngsters and grasping whom to retain is urgent. We can’t continue to carry so many unproductive AFL level players.
