Review 2021 Mid Season Draft Discussion

Coverage starts at 6.30PM on the AFL website and AFL app:

The draft itself starts at 7pm (AEST)

The draft order for the mid-season rookie draft is the reverse ladder order after Round 11, with the number of picks dependent on the number of open list spots. (Spots opened up as LTIs/retirees are put on the inactive list.)

Good luck to the AFL teams, trying to sort players from the 42 state league teams while also keeping an eye on the NAB league is not easy.
Won’t need to worry about NAB League for the next 4 weeks

I know that. I’m just wondering if there’s a rule that prevents from being paid more than the top national draftees second year.
Nope.

They get to negotiate their contract for next season.

Worst they can do is a further one or two year base rookie contract.

They can still negotiate a higher contract and remain on the rookie list though.

The value of their contract equal to a rookie contract does not count against the TPP, so they could sign for $160k per, with $80k coming out of the soft cap, and $80k coming out of the hard cap (TPP).

I'm thinking we may not have any picks. Fairly sure one of either McNeil or Scott took the spot.

WAFL mature agers post-R3

Luke Strnadica (EF) - Has been on a list before, was stuck deep in the ruck pecking order at Freo. Has flourished since Jon Griffin retired as EF's #1 ruck.
Sam Fisher (SD) - unsure how he'd do not being the #1 mid choice, but he's got great hands, decent run and carry, and can hit a target by foot
Cody Ninyette (SF) - needs to be given a chance. He's only 23, has kicked 12 goals in 3 weeks. All he does is create goalscoring opportunities. He's strong for his size, and could absolutely make a different at the highest level.
Josh Schoenfeld (EF) - you wouldn't believe he was a wingman at AFL level. Handy on the inside, good by foot
Greg Clark (S) - should have been drafted as junior, can play inside and win the footy, outside and deliver it well by foot
Noah Pegoraro (WP) - everyone has their favourites, this kid is mine. 194cm key defender, plays tall, good leap (can pinch hit in the ruck), reads the play well.

Others to look at: Bailey Rogers (C), Harrison Marsh (S), Jack Buller (C), Jonathon Marsh (EF), Jake Patmore (C), Matthew Parker (SF), Lachlan Martinis (C)

Players with talent who probably don't have the points of difference to get drafted: Jye Bolton (C), Tyler Keitel (WP), Haiden Schloithe (SF), Milan Murdock (EF)
Good work.

I've long held the opinion Jye Bolten is the best player not playing AFL. At 29 I don't think he gets a look in though.

Corey Gault's 28 so probably not a show, but I would add him to the list. He's been a very good WAFL player for a while.

Mason Shaw could be considered as well.

You also need KPP's. I'm not saying Powell isn't looking good, I like him quite a bit. However I think Chapman was better suited to your needs.

Powell is good, just feel you needed to take a KPP with one of the two first round picks.

Ah, I was unaware of that. Fair enough then.
McDonald and Powell was the right move IMO.

Does Edwards even have a choice ?

I thought he was automatically available as a 19 year old that was registered in the draft in 2020

He can opt out of the MSD.

Not sure why you would do that when a Victorian club likely has the first two picks. He may end up interstate in the ND.

As has been said, he could potentially renegotiate a first round style draft contract at the end of the 6 months.

He also gets a 6 month head start in the strength and conditioning program.

I fully expect him to continue playing in the NAB League after he gets taken, just as some other Cat B rookies are.

The interesting one is Raak. The Dogs could conceivably get in his ear and give him guarantee's to exclude himself from the MSD. The same with McKay/Carlton.

The only spanner with Raak is, if he theoretically excluded himself from the MSD, got bid on in the first 20 picks, he could end up anywhere.

Why are points so inflated? An average of 163 points after 3 weeks is outrageous, are they calculated differently at NAB League level?

yea it gives no indication if they are good enough or not, because unlike the AFL you have so many different quality players in u18's some are destined AFL players, some are destined to have careers in the VFL some will be Amateurs champions, some will have solid Amateurs careers, some will quit footy at 19, unlike the AFL where everyone is of a similar skill level and stats can be a useful indication of performance against the top tier peers, these stats can be super inflated depending on opponents.

probably they are just calculating points from stats and adding them up when in afl games the points are weighted and scaled, isnt there a rule in supercoach where is only something like 3600 points a game. So if more people are playing well scores from stats are lower and if you get injured and sit out the 2nd half the point acquired go down.

Also Cody Raak playing for Footscray tonight against GWS

I liked the look of him when he was on our list.... although today the Lions we're witches hats in the 1st quarter.
I found it strange that he didn't get a debut for the Lions. It wasn't like he didn't have big NEAFL performances either.

Yeah, the Lions were witches hats but you can only beat what you come up against.
