Great series by NZ. Very interested to see what XI takes on India.

Top 6 should be straight forward. Surely Boult/Southee/Wagner combo gets in leaving 2 spots for Jamieson/CDG/Mitchell/Patel?

Jamieson is a certainty. The question would be whether they pick Wagner or CDG along with the spinner or they go left field and go with an all seamer line up without a spinner.

Tend to agree. I'd be thinking Jamieson, Southee, Wagner, Patel, Boult... Weakens their batting having Jamieson at 7 but he bats ok and if that top 6 can't get a decent score then they probably don't deserve to win.

Assuming Santner is out the last spot will be Patel if they want spin or Mitchell/de Grandhomme for a 5th seamer. You'd assume they'd pick the spinner

I'm picking Jadeja as a batsman and not as a bowler per se. With his red hot form, he will contribute more than whatever the other alternative Vihari would do anyway.

For me, it's very simple. If it's a green seamer, then 3 seamers should be enough and if they aren't sufficient enough to do a job, then there's no point picking a 4th seamer and further weakening your batting on a greentop. If it's a flat wicket, an extra spinner will always help, and the wicket might break up in the end where the extra spinner will be helpful. After having performed so well in the WTC, it would be very hard on Jadeja to leave him out of the playing XI imo.

To provide some context, these are Jadeja's stats in the last 3 years.

No Pujara on that list. He's been living off that 1st away Aussie win for a while now. I know he provides a role grinding it out but how much longer does he have until he needs to make some big scores?

I like the idea of Pujara opening with Rohit and Gil moves to 3.

It's clear that both Pujara and Rahane are a level below Dravid and VVS and we didn't really get their successors unlike Kohli with Tendulkar, but they have a tendency to score just enough to silence the critics and keep their spot safe. Also the fact that guys like Vihari and Rahul haven't really challenged them has kept their spots relatively safe. I do think the time is running out for them and a couple of lean series would put a lot of pressure on them keeping their spots.

Patel showed enough in this test to get the spinners spot ahead of Santner, I don't think Santner's batting is enough to make up for his inferior bowling.

I'd also rather they went with the 4 pace bowlers with Boult, Southee, Wagner and Jamieson rather than an all rounder in Mitchell or de Grandhomme even if that weakens the batting. A stronger bowling line up is more important if you want to give yourself the best chance of winning.

yep Boult, Southee, Wagner and Jamieson are locks you'd think

Interesting to see the debate on the NZ team. For me there isn't much to debate really, assuming he's fit CDG will play ahead of Mitchell. It just depends on whether they need a spinner or not. If yes it'll be Boult or Wagner missing imo (Boult missing on form imo).

Latham
Conway
KW
Rosco
Nicholls
Watling
CDG (Mitchell)
Jamieson
Southee
Boult
Wagner (Patel)

Personnaly if they don't play a spinner I would prefer Mitchell as he's a better batsman, or ideally Young, but we never play a batter at 6.

Black Caps take No1 ranking with that thrashing.

Think they made need a specialist at #6. Young looked good on debut.. I have him. Then Watling at#7 with your three quicks plus one of either Jamieson/Patel. If room for a spinner not Santner please. Patel looks far more penetrative.

I'd go with seamers. Don't think either spinner is going to trouble Indian batsmen.

I agree with you about a batsman at #6 but we never do it, always want the fifth bowler. It's a waste too as all our quicks can bowl long spells, especially Wagner.

Santner is a waste of time in tests, he can't get good batter's out and his batting isn't that good. I'm sure if a spinner plays it will be Patel.

I think they'll pick the 4 seamers too Wagner,Jamieson,Boult & Southee and CDG with Patel ,Henry and Santner to miss
Don't really see the point of playing a spinner against the Indians when our best chance is the 4 quicks.

Plenty of variety in the quicks with all bringing different attributes, plus CDG can bowl 15 overs in an innings.
Bit unlucky for Henry and Patel, but why change whats worked over the last 4-5 years

dont think there's much chance of Wagner missing MT, he just gets quality batsmen out and has for quite some time. I think Boult would miss before him.
He bowls as many overs in a spell as a spinner anyway !

Now here is an enigma. Henry has a diabolical Test average.. around @50. yet I rated him the best of the BC bowlers in last Test. On that performance I'd be seriously considering him for the third quick role.
Henry specialises in having catches dropped off his bowling. He's super unlucky, you can almost guarantee if we put a catch down it's off him. Spoils the figures a bit.

Yeah I agree, Wagner plays over Boult if that's the choice.

I suspect the ICC (who are in charge of the ground for this test) will be under huge pressure to produce a "fair" pitch (i.e. a road that has some turn later) with no grass on it. India won't allow anything that helps our strength, they've already had the venue moved.

I think our bowlers will trouble their batters, especially Jamieson. Not so confident in our batting, as usual a lot depends on Williamson. Really need a big hundred from someone in the first innings.

Yeah, why isn't this being played at Lords? Nice ground but Southampton hardly screams Home of Cricket.
