So to summarize....there mist be a material restriction otherwise a hold cannot be called....MR means deviating the players momentum from where it was going. And....if a defensive players first move is to rip which thus causes the OLman to be in a holding situation, then it is not holding and the OLman can basically continue hooking/restricting/holding the player, he earned that right by the defenders premature use of the rip. Those two points seem to be the most salient to consider. You can hold a little, you can have arms out or in, you can grab, but soon as you restrict the defenders momentum, the angle hes going, causing it deviate, thats a hold. Also important in the article...that if a ref didnt see the whole action he cannot throw a flag. A good indicator of a hold and material restriction for officials to see is if the linemans FEET ARE BEAT. If the defender skillfully got to a position where his feet are advanced veyond where the linemans feet are, then usually a lineman will resort to holding. As he is beat and thus any attempt to thwart the rusher will cause him to be materially restricted.

This is why they constantly preach about footwork and good technique as a lineman.

The only thing im still confused by tbh is youre not allowed to take a defender down to the ground, and yet they always talk about how good lineman have pancaked a defender. Will have to find an article and video to explain that.

Ok so pancake block can ONLY happen on rushing playa, and is the act of basically pushing or bulldozing defender backwards onto the ground. Because you get out of your stance quickly and drive forward on a run play, allowed to cross the line of scrimmage.

But on a pass play, you must remain behind the LOS until the pass is thrown. And as youre moving backward the technique is all about technique, not brute strength, a ballet of arms/hands and feet positioning between the defender and blocker. You cannot grab and pull them down to the ground. However, you often do see tackles block and as the rusher speeds around the outside, you see them maintain a clean block and THEN push them to the ground in the same direction their momentum is already going....so thats not a foul. Only if you materially restrict a direction theyre going is it a foul

Gotcha

Putting it one easier to read post....

So....

Article explaining details of holding, and video by the NFL 10 years ago explaining it all.

So, to summarize.... the gist of it.....

There must be a "material restriction" otherwise a hold won't be called. Material restriction means deviating the defender's momentum from where it was going. A visible impediment noticeable in their momentum or change of direction.

Also...if a defensive player's first move is to rip which thus causes the OLman to be in a holding situation, then it is not holding and the OLman can continue hooking/restricting/holding the player, he earned that right by the defenders premature use of the rip.

Those two points seem to be the most salient to consider. You can hold a little, you can have arms out or in, you can grab, but soon as you restrict the defenders momentum, the angle he's going, causing it to deviate, that's a hold.

Also important in the article.. if a ref didn't see the whole action between defender and lineman he should not throw a flag for a hold.

A good indicator for an official to see if a hold is happening is to see if the lineman's FEET ARE BEAT. If the defender skillfully got to a position where his feet are advanced beyond where the lineman's feet are, then usually a lineman will resort to holding. As he is beat and thus any attempt to thwart the rusher will cause him to be materially restricted.

This is why they constantly preach about footwork and good technique as a lineman. It's all about technique, not brute strength, a ballet of arms/hands and feet positioning between the defender and blocker trying to get the advantage.

Great post earlier pointing this all out, it made absolute sense the minute I read it but I'm sure I've never heard or read it explained that way before.

Cheers GG.

Matt Nagy vouched for him and Nick was familiar with his (I use the term loosely) "offense" so what happened at the Bears? lol ....excuse for me not swallowing this tripe.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Colts will not be trading for Nick Foles, Marcus Mariota, Gardner Minshew, or any other veteran quarterback "at this time."
Per Mort, Carson Wentz (foot surgery) will start his rehab in two weeks and has yet to be ruled out for the Week 1 opener. The Colts will take a wait-and-see approach under center, rolling with Jacob Eason, Brett Hundley, and rookie Sam Ehlinger for the remainder of the summer, giving Wentz a chance to be back early in the season. If things get complicated, Indy's tune could obviously change. Foles' connection with coach Frank Reich has made him the Colts' most likely trade target.

Seems like Nick Bosa is another without the Vax. but i doubt that shocks anyone who knows his political views.

Also seems his girlfriend loves using the N slur and is full on MAGA and anti mask/anti vax. and nuked her social media accounts after being found out.
