Surely the big unresolvable issue for Aussie Rules expansion outside Australia is that most countries outside England and India don't have dozens of cricket grounds dotting their major cities?

The lack of cricket ovals is not an issue.
A common problem is finding field space period. Established sports have the priority over new sports.
Many places have sports precincts where it might be possible to get adjoining pitches.
The norm is 9-a-side football with 18--a-side usually reserved for representative football.
For some reason there seems to be significant synergy between R.U. clubs and A.F.C.s

India is too effing hot all year for footy.

Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka play regularly.

I'll re-phase - Canberra is neutral, between the two biggest cities anyway.
You seem to have forgot the thread topic, that being the ABC is a NEWS service and as a NATIONAL broadcaster
it would be natural to have the National broadcaster in the national capitol,
now how lousy it's weather, geography or politics.

It wouldn't be neutral though, it would quickly become Canberra centric. I lived there for 5 years, it's something else.

HTF could news become Canberra-centric - nothing happens there outside of politics that already happens there ?
And Canberra-centric news would be relief from the constant Sydney-centric news.

Aus Open tennis gets 7 figure audiences every day. Golf is a massively popular sport in this country.

Yachting? Seriously, have you ever had an actual discussion about it outside of the Olympics? Is there any objective measure that would suggest more than a handful of people are interested?

Americas Cup or only when Aus is competing ? Its a bit like motor sport, it has its niche support with both national & international following, where Australians compete at the highest level often ignored by those who regard themselves as sports fans.

Movement in the Rugby Union/private equity world:

New Zealand Rugby all but sealed a historic private equity deal ...by NZR to sell a $NZ200m ($186m) stake in the All Blacks, to multi-billion dollar American investment firm Silver Lake .....
NZR needed to overcome resistance from the New Zealand Rugby Players Association, but an agreement was reached.

Although the 26 provincial unions must still sign off on terms, it seems likely they will agree to the investment from Silver Lake in a deal that will also allow an additional $NZ100 million to be offered to New Zealand-based institutional investors later in 2022. All up, NZR will sell a 5.71-8.58 per cent state in its commercial rights.

The deal is a significantly watered down from the one that was flatly rejected by the players last year, despite its overall valuation rising to $NZ3.5 billion.

RA has watched NZR’s private equity proposal closely over the past year. Importantly, they engaged the Rugby Union Players’ Association and their boss, former Wallaby Justin Harrison, from the outset.

The states could still yet play a role in delaying RA’s hopes of getting their private equity bid off the ground, but the governing body is intent on pursuing it once they receive confirmation of hosting the 2027 World Cup on May 11.

1. BBC 26.2.22 said

"Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich says he is "giving trustees of Chelsea's charitable foundation the stewardship and care" of the club.

Abramovich, who will remain the club's owner, has made the move amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The decision also comes a day before Chelsea play Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley

Earlier in the week, Labour's Chris Bryant told MPs he had a leaked Home Office document that suggested Abramovich should not be able to base himself in the UK.

Downing Street would not be drawn on the claims about Abramovich made in the House of Commons.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel had said on Friday there were "so many uncertainties around the situation of our club" following Russia's invasion of a neighbouring country".

What will be the impact on the A League's "glamour" team, Sydney FC, & its Russian connections?
Owner is very wealthy Russian businessman D. Traktovenko (born in Russia, but now usually lives in Australia, AFAIK).

2. Who owns Western United? Probably mainland Chinese interests.

China abstained on a succesfull motion in the United Nations Security Council to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine: & China also announced a few days ago that it will soon be increasing its imports from Russia- thus cushioning the major sanctions on Russia, announced by USA, EU, UK, Canada, & Australia etc..

3. Very wealthy T .Sage, ex Briton, but now usually residing in Australia AFAIK, owns Perth Glory.

He is also a significant % owner, & Chairman, of the ASX-listed Eurpean Lithium EUR (EUR is a non-producer currently- its main asset is a potential lithium mine in Austria). EUR's ASX share price has dropped about 50% in the last month.
EUR hoped to bid for 2 world class, potential lithium mines (crucial for the booming electric vehicle battery industry, & general storeage batteries for electric solar power) in the Ukraine.

Stockhead 4.11.21 said, re Sage's EUR hope to acquire Ukraine's massive lithium deposts

"This is potentially very significant for the company as Shevchenkivske has an Exploration Target of between 11 million tonnes and 14Mt grading between 1.2% and 1.3% lithium oxide while Dobra has a significantly larger Exploration Target of between 80Mt and 105Mt grading 1.1% to 1.4% Li2O".

Will the Ukraine war affect greatly Sage's wealth? And, eventually, his ability to continue to fund Perth Glory (Sage has recently stated he has lost $40m net, funding Perth Glory since 2005)?

EDIT:

BBC 28.2

"The trustees of Chelsea's charitable foundation have not yet agreed to take control of the club, BBC Sport has learned".
