Now for team 18.

You'd think numerical imbalance would create sufficient impetus for "team 18". At the same time it's not clear that it's a monty to happen given the NRL's weakness in the face of the broadcasters and clubs

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo held a conference call with the 16 club chairs and chief executives on Thursday, where expansion and the game’s finances were the hot topics. The governing body revealed a profit of $50 million for the financial year, a figure that would have been $81 million had it not been for COVID-19 costs over the course of the league financial year.

Just to trivialise any ethical questions about the NRL's pending decision to introduce another league's club dependent team into the comp, the Saudi Crown Prince has just purchased Newcastle United

The sheer depravity has reached new levels when a regime headed by a man that is directly implicated in the the luring, killing and dismembering of a journalist because he was critical of him can buy into the EPL.

Even putting aside just how bad the Saudi regime is, imagine if they are successful at elevating NU into perennially fighting for a top 4 spot? Essentially you would have the only three historically middling clubs that have managed to join the big boys this century having done so due to the money of kleptocrats. What does that say?

Just another example of the $trength of the round ball game at its highest level.

Is there similar reporting of the D's boom time.
Yes very similar.
Speaking to The Age, Demons chief executive Gary Pert revealed the club sold $2.7 million worth of merchandise across the past month, including 10,000 'road to the Grand Final' t-shirts.

Despite being unable to source further blue t-shirts as well, Melbourne were able to sell $1.2 million worth of merchandise in the days that followed their memorable win on the weekend.

Also being yet to release premiership branded merchandise to their faithful, Melbourne have still amassed a staggering increase in demand that will likely see them become one of the more profitable clubs among these trying years.

“We have done three years of merchandise in a month before the grand final. That is without considering family days you would normally have in Melbourne after a grand final,” Pert told The Age.

“Those sort of numbers for a club like Melbourne are just extraordinary.”

Winners are grinners & good on them.

This RL website provides detailed information on many RL topics, & I was suprised to learn from the E. Richardson OP (written c. 16.9.21) that nrl.com increased its weekly patronage to 3.5m people pw in 2020, then 4.5m people pw in 2021.

The article provides an interesting link (SMH R. Masters May 2019) to the very high potential values of nrl.com that have been reported- an independent audit claiming $1b potential value was justifiable.

4.5m people pw is a big no.- surely these can be monetised?
Can any one produce the average weekly figures for afl.com? And any published estimates on its future, potential valuation?
(We must accept both are start-up businesses, initially having losses- so their true future worth is difficult to calculate).

Does anyone know how many of the nrl.com 4.5m people are separate viewers/once a week, cf how many might view many times pw ie its reach?

It seems very risky that the NRL are making many staff there redundant, & downgrading considerably its appeal. It will no longer publish any news-breaking articles (which would be a major reason for many NRL fans to view the site).

Once NRL fans are lost to the site, can they easily be regained in the future? I assume they will, if the format later reverted to its previous scope, with "real" news.

Looks like AFL.com.au tends to be about 1/3rd higher......parodoxically it drops during finals when there are less teams still alive and less games

Interesting also the NRL has a global domain where as the AFL still has the .au

I wonder what the pros and cons of each are?

1. A Melb. AFL club drug-useage video would have made front & back page etc. coverage in Melb., & been highlighted in the MSM for several days- Melb. Storm did not.
It makes one query the true level of interest/ "penetration" that Melb. Storm/NRL have in Melb.?

2. "We also understand that a fight is also emerging for the Australian right to the English Premier League, the world’s most watched soccer competition.

The EPL rights, currently held by Optus, are expected to fetch as much as $80m [Wow] annually in the auction which will be held before the end of the year, according to industry sources who requested anonymity because the process is confidential claims the SMH.

The EPL rights auction is expected to be a four-way battle involving two Australian broadcasters, Optus and Stan Sport, and two cashed-up American-owned players, Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video, which both have aggressive growth ambitions. Stan is owned by Nine Entertainment, which also owns this masthead.

All four companies declined to comment, while the Premier League was also contacted for comment".

Anyone knows what ratings &/or the no. of subscribers to Optus in Aust. for EPL games?
$80m pa Rights' $ expected seems very high, for a new deal.

Roy Maters strikes again!

Because the AFL is a home-grown game, it caters for all social classes with no inherent divide, which makes it easier to rule. When the NSW Government announced plans to build two new Sydney stadiums, an outcry followed. The Victorian Government basically gifted the AFL a stadium at Docklands without a murmur.

How does he get away with this?

Yep, agreed. I can see them going a couple of years before we see the 18th team. Then again, I didn't think we'd see this team anytime soon either, so you never know.
