Im at my parents- who have the TV turned up as it is due to their hearing.

**** me.. they leave the ads just playing as normal, im always telling them to hit the ****ing mute button. Its like.. noise pollution.

I believe that technically the ads aren't louder - there is noise level restrictions in place for TV shows & ads, but it's something to do with how they mix the sound which gives the impression of it being louder
