Welcome to the 2021 edition of the Bigfooty Annual Phantom Draft, where draft watchers from across the Draft Board and club boards come together for a collaborative draft! As always we want to thank all the contributors taking part in the draft for participating, this is truly the main event on the DTFA board every year and you all make it possible <3

Selectors;
Adelaide - Thunderstruck
Brisbane - ModernArtillery
Carlton - Arr0w
Collingwood - Pie 4 Life
Essendon - foj1
Fremantle - Chris25
Geelong - Bastyy
Gold Coast - Ysaye
GWS - PMBangers
Hawthorn - Davo-27
Melbourne - eDPS
North Melbourne - giantroo
Port Adelaide - Macca19
Richmond - Smythe
St Kilda - Knightmare
Sydney - andleanback
West Coast - Monocle
Western Bulldogs - Wizard17

Rules
- Time frame is always the big talking point and there won't be a set limit this year, rather a 'reasonable' length of time will be given. The draft is shorter this year, and historically this thing ebbs and flows throughout the day so there's no need to rush. But if it goes on a bit long, a pick will either be made for the drafter or it'll be skipped over until they're back

- Academy and F/S players are able to be bid on. Someone will do the points calculation and adjust the draft order accordingly

- Gold Coast Suns linked players born in 2003, such as Austin Harris, Bodhi Uwland and Ned Stevens are assumed to be pre-listed for the purpose of this draft, however overaged prospects are open slather

- There is NO Live Pick Trading

- List Managers must make a minimum of 3 selections, and can pass once they've made 3 picks (includes academy or father-son)

- It is preferable if selectors include some basic info (Name, Club, height, weight, position) and a rationale for their selections

THIS THREAD WILL OPEN UP ON MONDAY MORNING FOR SELECTIONS TO BEGIN TAKING PLACE

We're open amd ready to draft! Please remember to tag the next list manager when you've selected. If you're a spectator remember to be respectful to the selectors

giantroo up with Pick 1, hard choice I know

Pick 1 - Jason Horne-Francis
Pick 1 - Jason Horne- Francis - Midfielder - 184cm/78cm - South Adelaide/South Australia

He wanted the No.1 tag and he’s got it. Jason Horne-Francis - the name that is on everyone’s lips and the hottest draft prospect. Multiple AFL clubs recently attempted to trade for the coveted #1 pick but were knocked back by North Melbourne.

The ultimate prototype midfielder who ‘has all the attributes’ you would want from a player. Horne is a quick, competitive, powerful, tough midfielder who can play on the inside and outside, possesses a good leap and has strong overhead marking. But it isn’t just the offensive side of the game that has the AFL world buzzing. His defensive application in the game is truly elite with his tackling and run down tackles a highlight of his game. Horne-Francis is very flexible and has shown to be capable of playing multiple roles which included playing at half back, half forward , wing and in the centre for South Adelaide this season.

There wouldn’t be a North Melbourne fan who wouldn’t be excited about adding Horne-Francis to the likes of Tarryn Thomas, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Jy Simpkin, Jaidyn Stephenson, Tom Powell and Will Phillips.

Horne-Francis : "[North Melbourne] have spoken to me and said [they will select me]”

Was hoping he'd slide to my first 😔

Pick 3 - Nick Daicos (Matched Bid)
Good, I did a lot of pre-planning to match points

Pick 3 - GWS bid on Nick Daicos
Pie 4 Life

I mean I'm not keen on getting murdered by Pies fans on this board, so I guess I'll match.

...

NICK DAICOS PROFILE

Having entered his top-age season riding a wave of hype, Nick Daicos has delivered on so many levels. The Collingwood father-son prospect comes from elite pedigree and carries a name lodged deep into Magpie folklore, meaning he is already a fan favourite among the black and white army – despite supporting Carlton. Faced with arguably more expectation and attention that any other draft prospect in recent memory, the impressive 18-year-old has taken on each challenge with aplomb and is rightly considered one of the best two prospects nationwide. He captained the AFL Academy and Oakleigh Chargers, dominating each game he played with elite decision making and production through midfield.

STRENGTHS:

+ Consistency
+ Production
+ Clean Skills
+ Leadership
+ Endurance
+ Decision Making
+ Scoreboard Impact

IMPROVEMENTS:

– Impact per Kick
– Strength

Despite the limited opportunities and being heavily managed throughout the season, the 18-year-old delivered in each game with an incredibly high level of production across multiple levels. He was nothing short of dominant among his peers; consistently racking up game-high numbers in the NAB League or one-off representative showcases.

Looking at pure numbers, Daicos’ 2021 averages stack up against the likes of Matt Rowell and Sam Walsh, both of whom were undeniable number one picks out of the NAB League. As leader of his Chargers, Daicos averaged an astonishing 35.8 disposals, 5.8 marks, and two goals per his five outings. His consistent output and sheer production levels are massively impressive, and largely credit to two factors; his running capacity and decision making.

Able to run all day and find the ball in all areas of the ground, Daicos’ impact on games is one of accumulation. His endurance level makes him a readymade AFL midfielder, and he consistently makes good decisions while bringing others into the play. A team-first player, Daicos loves to give-and-go and often demands the ball back from each disposal through sheer work rate. Teammates trust him with the ball and he is seldom caught in possession, keeping his feet and showcasing great poise and awareness to come away effectively by hand or foot.

His smarts also extend to stoppage craft, where Daicos is able to position himself best and time each run beautifully. Even with body contact, he proves clean in his handling of the ball and has enough athleticism to get to the outer. After his initial acts on the inside, Daicos then shows his balance on the outer with the aforementioned running capacity and knack for rolling forward to kick goals. Seemingly a genetic quality, he has no problem finishing on the run, with dribbled efforts, or from set shots beyond the arc.

While he has an abundance of strengths, there are a few more improvement areas to nitpick with Daicos – as is often the case with the very best prospects. While clearly a terrific endurance athlete, Daicos can look to add some muscle to his 72kg frame going forward, helping him better deal with the rigours of midfield work at senior level. Some question his defensive running, though with 3.4 tackles per game this year he clearly is not afraid of getting his hands dirty at the contest, and can easily improve that side of his game. His true value is shown going the other way, in any case.

Pick 4 - Josh Gibcus - GWV Rebels
194 cm 84 kg
Tall Defender
gib.jpg

Strength:
Athleticism
Rationale: So there's been rumours galore surrounding what GWS might do wtih Pick 2; trade down, select Mac Andrew, select Finn Callaghan, select Josh Rachele, Select Josh Gibcus, etc. Ultimately blind freddy can see that we're well stocked for midfielders as it is, and I'm an advocate for going best available usually but in a draft with so many quality midfielders I'm confident there'll be a good one available to me at Pick 15 if I'm deadset on getting one in.

The consideration then became Andrew v Gibcus, Andrew has an insane ceiling obviously, and I think he could play anywhere, but at the end of the day I'm more confident that Gibcus becomes a genuine top level KPD than Andrew becomes a top level Ruck/ Forward. That's not to say I'll be disappointed if we go the way of Mac come actual draft night, I just don't quite have the nerve to pick him when a safer player (in my view at least) is available

Gibcus's biggest strength is his athleticism, he's able to keep up with every opponent he's played on with his speed really impressive for a tall, and obviously his leap amongst the best in the pool, but what I think is understated about Gibcus is just how accountable he is, very rarely have I seen his opponents capitalise on a mistake he's made, because he makes so few when it comes to defending. He's capable of winning his grappling contests, he's smart enough to know when it's best to spoil or go for the mark, and he's athletic enough to get away with things other player simply can't afford to.

The only concern I have with Gibcus is his kicking in offense, his ball use is generally safe, but when he does try to make miracles happen going forward it doesn't always pay off, but in a system with the likes of Whitfield, Kelly, Cumming, etc. supporting him, I don't think it's a limitation that'll effect the team

Also considered: Finn Callaghan, Mac Andrew

Interesting choice would of thought Giants would take Mac Andrew

I prefer Gibcus to Andrew but would have gone with the best available of Callaghan who is different to our other midfielders.
I hope our draft team does the same. Im hoping it is a long time before we get a pick this early and would like us to use it well.

Pick 5 - Neil Erasmus (BFONE)

Pick 5: Neil Erasmus
Height:
188cm Weight: 80kg* (WAFL Website - note he might be bigger than these numbers)
Club: Subiaco Lions
Strengths: Marking, Big possession winner, position versatility, above average in nearly all categories including footskills, ball handling, speed, endurance etc.
Weaknesses: Standout weapon, can become a little messy with disposal in traffic

Reasons for choice: I had a few players tied on points, these being Erasmus, Finn Callaghan, Josh Gibcus, Mac Andrew and Josh Rachelle. I was expecting to have to have the choice of Callaghan pre-mock draft and he was probably the closest competitor with respect to tie-breaking. In the end I went with Erasmus because:
  • More Fail Safe - I think unlike others Erasmus is more likely to make 100 games than any of the others in the same bracket. Whilst he doesn't really have a standout weapon apart from his around the ground marking, he is above average in lots of categories and his average possession count this year for the games he played showed that he consistently finds lots the football.
  • More versatile - Whilst I think his best position will probably be in the middle of the ground, he equally has the tools to be useful off the flanks or wing.
I want to emphasize though that the distance wasn't that far between him and the next player.

Hi Guys - Im stuck in meetings but just quickly (and a little suprised about status so far) Pick 5: Neil Erasmus and will do writeup later.
Really? seems abit early especially with callaghan on the board and also would of thought suns would want a ruck

Just thought a ruck would be a better option

It is reported we need a ruck, we actually have 2 young rucks in the system as it is (Flynn and Briggs) and Preuss.

If Preuss doesnt work out and the 2 kids dont kick on, we'll prob try again for a ruck.

Pick 7 - Ben Hobbs

pick 7 - Hawthorn - Ben Hobbs - GWV - 183cm 80kg

tough inside mid, with great leadership potential, up there with Daicos as the best inside midfielder in the draft, he is too good not to take here, Ward was the other option at this spot if Hobbs was taken, but Hobbs will help improve our midfield which has been a weakness for us and help with our contested football in the midfield.
