Josh had an unbelievable year albeit playing only the 5 games.
The young man has already got an impressive resume as he was named Captain of not only the APS team of the year, but the NAB League Team of the year as well.

He was able to average over 30 possessions to go along with 5 marks and 5 tackles per game highlighting his tenacious want for the ball in a contest but also his 2 way running ability.

Josh covers the ground really well and is always getting from contest to contest easily, showcasing his beautiful mix of inside and outside capabilities. He is not the quickest player out there on the field but nowhere near the slowest. Would love to teach him how to be more damaging in the front half and start kicking goals to go along with his high possession high clearance game, but I'm sure that will come with time in a full time football environment.

At heart, he is a ball winning, high possession, clearance mid, but he also has a very well rounded game and his skills and vision help his team get the ball out and away from the contest and moving forward and he is very much a team first man.
His disposal is very good and his awareness in traffic and game IQ shines through in almost every passage of play he is involved in whether its bursting through traffic, a quick handball to a team mate or hitting up a leading forward he generally makes the right decision.

I was surprised he got to this pick and could not have selected him fast enough, as i believe he would fit into the young Richmond midfield brigade very easily and be the Cotchin replacement that we will soon need.

With Mac Andrew avalible why wouldnt they go the fwd/Rck

The Saints very well could consider Andrew. Even after Johnson though, there were still a couple of others I considered better choices.

As their selector, and having the opportunity to choose who I believe to be the best player available, and every bit as much of a need, if not more, I made the selection with that in mind rather than predicting who I think the Saints would pick in reality.

Andrew is talented but I don't rate him as a key position player and if he's to develop as a ruck in the long term which is beyond question how I'd develop him, it's going to be a 4-6 years process to get him physically ready. It doesn't take much game planning at this point to completely stop Andrew from leaping at the ball, completely negating his usefulness at this point. And with how the Saints are built, I wouldn't want to go to that extreme of long term project, certainly not this early.

Had the rules been set up to allowed it, I would have spoken to the West Coast selector and said 'if I'm taking the pick, once Ward is off the board, Johnson is my best available and the guy I'll be taking. If you want the pick, I'm open to you making me an offer.'

I had zero attachment to the selection and would have much preferred moving back via 1-2 trades to increase my hand for 2022 before possibly trading back into this draft into some of the sweet spots to secure some of the players I would have had in mind to target if available.

Pick 12. Josh Goater. 190 cm 78kg. Midfielder. Calder Cannons.







Versatile hard running balanced midfielder, that has a damaging burst of speed that see's him attack the ball at full pace and then be able burst away from the pack.

The amount of separation that he gains with his pace is both an offensive and defensive weapon.

He is a proven contested ball winner that moves very well in heavy traffic, his evasive skills are quite extraordinary and often when he has done this, I have seen flashes of what I call "AFL Moments" in his game.

Another feature of his game is his ability to distribute the ball by hand, this makes him a dangerous extractor and a link up player, he can take the ball away from a contest by hand in a blink of an eye. His foot skills are sound but his movement of ball by hand is elite.

His pace is not lost on the outside where his run and carry is a feature of his attacking game style.
An additional bonus to his game is that his overhead marking is very strong and he can play above his height.

There is also a degree of positional versatility to his skill set, as he can play as a rebounding defender or an attacking forward.
I see him starting his AFL career on a wing and as he build some core strength he will transition into the middle on a more permanent rate.
A strong tackler as well as also being able use his blistering pace to break a tackle too

His speed and agility is what sets him apart from others in this range.

Given West Coast's need to retool its midfield going forward Goater is an exciting prospect.


Others that I considered were: Arlo Draper and Josh Sinn both quality footballers but also both have durability / injury concerns.
One from a bit left field that I also toyed with reaching for was Mitch Knevitt who has some similar traits to Goater.

St Kilda have historically been very conservative with their recruiting, really sticking almost exclusively to Victorian recruiting. So I can understand your concern having been exposed to years of that, drafting more Jack's than you have Western Australia's or South Australian's.

I can't profess to being nearly as conservative.

If you're a competitive team and add competitive footballers, generally players don't leave. And if they were the best player there at the pick, you're going to get a good return from them normally anyway. So it's nothing I'd be losing sleep over.
